The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in a 2012 Nissan Sentra is near the tail shaft at the right rear point of the transmission. You can see it between the transmission housing and the radiator. It's fairly easily accessed by prying the plug from the sensor using a flat screwdriver. Make sure You disconnect the electrical connector first. The job of this particular sensor is to measure the wheel speed and report this information to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM then uses this info to modify transmission shift points, ignition timing, diagnostic routines, and air/fuELRatio. Symptoms of a failing one include inability to engage cruise control, erratic speedometer readings, check engine light is on, overheating, slipping, and reduced fuel economy. The average cost to replace the VSS in a 2012 Sentra is $280 to $300. Labor makes up about $70 to $90 of that total.
