The BMW's fault code, 4E24, involves errors detected with transmission control but it is addressed by replacing solenoids in the valve body, which requires replacing the entire valve body. The VB is responsible for directing the BMW's transmission with hydraulic fluids that control the tranny's clutches and gears. The 4E24 is usually thrown because one of the solenoids has gone bad. A mechanic will remove the transmission pan to release the VB and replace hydraulic fluids, seals and gaskets, as well as the solenoids and the VB itself. This repair is labor intensive and can cost anywhere from $600-$1,100 in parts and labor. Signs the BMW needs repair include slipping gears; banging or knocking noises when applying the brakes, and decreased power while backing up or reversing.
