Replacing the engine in a Toyota Prius can be costly and very time consuming. The expected price to do this ranges from $2,870 to over $4,580 in parts alone. If You choose to have a mechanic perform the engine replacement instead, You are going to need to pay around $1,580 to $2,248 in labor costs.

To replace the engine on the Toyota Prius will cost you between $2,300 and $3,100, with labor being $1,100 to $1,500 and parts are $1,200 to 1600. These are for used engines, new ones are significantly more expensive.
One dealer was quoted $12,000 for parts and labor to replace the engine - the other dealers I've tried to contact wouldn't response. I contacted independent shops, one quoted $1800 for labor, the other $4500 - neither shop was able or willing to provide an estimate for parts. For used engines I've gotten quotes from $1300 for a used short block, $3100 for a used long block, and $3800 for a rebuilt long block.
