The average cost for a trailer hitch installation on the Subaru Outback is $300 to $400 if done by a professional. Doing it Yourself will require basic screwdrivers, 10mm and 11/16" sockets, 6" socket extension, torque wrench, 1" hole saw, exhaust pliers, and a drill. You will need to support the exhauSTSystem first. Then lower the exhaust using the pliers to remove the isolator rods. The heat shields will need to be removed using the 10mm socket. Drill access holes into the frame on both the driver and passenger side to thread carriage bolts. Position the hitch and attach the necessary washers and bolts. Each hex nut should be torqued to 50 lb-ft. Lastly, trim and reattach the heat shields then reattach the exhauSTSystem. Suitable hitches for a 2018 model should have a max tongue weight of around 675 lbs and a trailer weight of 4,000 lbs.
