The Ford F-150 has different axle options that are available with different gear ratios. Having a different rear gear ratio can give You better on road performance, off road performance, or towing capacity. If Your axle has a code of 27 stamped on it that means that Your rear differential has a 3.31 gear ratio in the rear differential. This is also what is called an open differential meaning that it does not have any locker in it. Power will go to the path of least resistance when it exits Your differential, effectively driving one wheel at a time. This can be good for on road performance but may not get You out of stuck situations off road.
