The PATS code 1-6 may be thrown when starting the engine of the Ford F-150 if there are problems within the instrument cluster. Ford's PATS or "Passive Anti-Theft System" works to immobilize or fire the engine using a transponder chip within an authorized key. The F-150's steering column is equipped with a transceiver that recognizes and communicates with the key fob's transponder and enables start. It will display an error and fail to start if an alien key is detected, preventing theft of the truck. The system will also alert drivers if there are malfunctions within the instrument panel. The "1-6" error code indicates all the gauges have been compromised. The warning is usually due to a lack of communication between the panel and the PCM. Have both diagnosed.
