The MINI R56 coolant temperature sensor is located in the top of the thermostat housing on the left side of the engine. The sensor's probe projects into the engine block inlet, allowing temperature monitoring of the motor with limited interference from the rest of the coolant system. The coolant temperature sensor, abbreviated as CTS, in Your car is an important device that enables the control unit to give alerts if the engine is overheating or if the temperature within the system is rising for some reason. If the coolant temperature sensor goes bad it can send a false signal to the computer and throw off the fuel and timing calculations. It is not uncommon for the coolant temperature sensor to fail and send a permanently cold signal to the computer. This will reduce fuel economy, and may hinder engine performance.
