The P0016 diagnostic trouble code, or DTC, is shown by Your Chevy Equinox when the ECU reads a mismatch signal from the Crankshaft/Camshaft Position sensors. There are a few reasons why this can happen, a stretched timing belt, a faulty cam sensor or a faulty crank sensor are the most likely culprits. If the timing belt has stretched enough to cause the timing to shift, You will most likely have major drivability issues with the engine, if it even runs. So that will be Your first clue, if the trouble code is triggered but the engine runs normally, You almost definitely have a bad sensor. If it doesnt run or it runs very poorly, You will need to have the timing belt replaced which is not an easy job even if You have the tools and knowledge necessary to do it.

The P0016 code will display on a Chevy Equinox when the Crankshaft Position Sensor and the Camshaft Position Sensor are out of alignment by a certain number of degrees.
