When a P242F error code is stored, it means that the powertrain control module has detected a level of ash restriction in the diesel particulate filter deemed to be restrictive. What this means is that You will have a build-up of ash from the diesel fuel that You are burning. When this happens You will find that the system is not getting enough air through the filter. This can choke the engine, which will make it run badly. If it is thick enough then it will fail all together. This can be fixed by having the filter changed or cleaned, which is a cheapish thing to have done. If left alone You may have the engine accumulate damage over time.
