The Toyota Avalon, like almost all modern vehicles, uses DOT 3 brake fluid. Toyota recommends flushing the brake fluid every 60,000 miles. To do this properly You will need to purchase 3 12oz bottles of DOT 3 brake fluid, since You will need to drain the system, fill the system back up, drain it again and then fill it once more. This is done to make sure all of the old fluid has been flushed out of the lines. There are a few different types of brake fluid, DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5 are the most common. DOT 3 and DOT 4 are interchangeable althougH3 is the recommended version to use since it absorbs less moisture from the air which allows You to use the fluid longer between flushes. DOT 5 is for heavy duty applications and is not recommended for daily driven vehicles.
