This is going to depend on the model year and trim of Your Toyota Tacoma, but the official number seems to be about 200 pounds, which obviously is pretty laughable. General consensus is that about 400 pounds is a safe tailgate weight capacity, so as long as Your wife and mother-in-law both don't sit on it as the same time as You, it'll be fine. Just kidding! But, in seriousness, it depends on how the weight is distributed; 500 pounds spread over it isn't a big problem, but if You drop a 300 pound block on the tailgate, it's gonna paSSRight on through it. If You're going to hop up and down, do it in the bed of Your Tacoma, not on the tailgate, is what I'm saying.

The Toyota Tacoma tailgate weight capacity is rated 400 lbs by the manufacturer.

400 is correct which makes sense to account for an adult male riding a motorcycle up a ramp onto the bed. I don't know why it's not rated 600 lbs like an F-150 for those that drive an ATV onto the bed.
