The Volvo V70 XC uses SAE 0W-30 synthetic oil. It takes just about 6.2 quarts to completely fill the oil reservoir after draining, which includes the amount that pools in the filter. While Volvos tend to be incredibly reliable vehicles, as they age, they do become less efficient, one of the results of which is an increased amount of oil consumption. This happens because the valve stem seals begin to fail. You'll start to notice blue smoke under acceleration most the time, or consistently see smoke when You're idling. Replacing these seals is going to be one of the first things You should address if You notice that Your XC has suddenly begun to slurp more oil than expected between oil changes --- which, by the way, You should endeavor to keep up on at around 7,000 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first.
