The starter motor in a Ford Ranger can be found at the base of the engine on the driver's side. It is next to the bell housing for the transmission where it meets the back of the motor. If Your truck is not starting then You will want to first check the battery. If You hear no noise while trying to start Your truck then it is most likely a problem with Your battery being dead. If You hear a clicking or grinding noise coming from the starter while You try to start the truck then that is a sign that the starter motor is failing. It is also possible that the gears have stripped on the starter motor and they will need to be replaced.

Your starter is located on the driver's side of the engine, bolting in from the engine side into the bellhousing on the transmission.
