The Ford Transit cylinder head temperature sensor, or CHT, is used in the same way an engine coolant temperature sensor is. Located next to the cylinder head toward the back of the engine block, it monitors the temp of the head and sends this data to the van's main computer. Based on information gathered from the CHT, the Transit's computer determines how much fuel should be injected into the engine and whether to turn the cooling fans on. The CHT also runs the coolant temperature gauge on the dash. If replacing the sensor Yourself, avoid over-tightening it or You may crack or damage the cylinder. Follow the recommended torque specs outlined in the owner's manual. If it is going bad the Transit may overheat or refuse to start.
