When the hill start assist is not working in Your Ford Transit the first thing that You should do is use an OBD II scan tool on the vehicle. This will let You read codes that are stored in Your vehicle's ECU and if there are any codes related to the hill start assist progRam failing they will be stored here. Usually it is a sensor issue but there could be other problems as well so it is best to scan it. Another reason that hill start assist may not work is when the traction control system detects a fault. This could be caused by rocky roads or icy roads where there is low traction in the vehicle.
