The key fob that comes with Your MINI Cooper uses a VL2020 rechargeable battery that You can purchase online. Although these are rechargeable batteries that get charged every time You insert the fob into its slot, the battery will eventually go bad. If this happens it can stop You from starting the engine, so replacing the battery before it goes bad is advisable. To replace the battery You will only need the new battery and a small flat head screwdriver. The first thing to do is separate the two halves starting at the end opposite the key ring slot. Once You have the fob in two pieces You need to remove the inner battery cover. From there You only need to slide out the old battery and replace it with the new one.

If your key fob won't start your MINI Cooper, make sure the battery isn't dead in your fob and check programming of your key.
