There are a number of common reasons for the GMC Terrain digital speedometer to stop working. Most of the time, these malfunctions are caused by a faulty gear on the speedometer system, the speed sensor or the defective engine control unit (ecu). The malfunctioning speedometer can also be caused by defective wiring. You should check the fuses and wiring first before going to check the speed sensor or ECU as these are more expensive and labor intensive repairs. The cost for the diagnosis if You take it to a mechanic or dealership will range for $100 to $150 depending on the labor required to diagnose the problem. If it is the worst case scenario the speed sensor or the ECU the cost for repairs will range from $300 - $500 including parts and labor.
