2001 Jeep Cherokee SE From Drivers Side

If you’ve been considering the purchase of an older model Jeep Cherokee, the 2001 Jeep Cherokee SE is one to consider. This base model of the classic Jeep Cherokee continues to garner a following in the used SUV market, especially among those who appreciate the classic, boxy look of this workhorse.

What does the 2001 Jeep Cherokee SE deliver?

While the 2001 Jeep Cherokee SE may be the most basic of the 2001 Cherokee lineup, it may still have all you need to get the job done. You’ll still get your choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, and the SE comes equipped with a 4.0L SMFI I6 “Power Tech” engine.

If you think the Cherokee SE might fit the bill, here’s a closer look at what the base trim means for this basic SUV. We’ll give you the details of what to expect from the SE. But first, we’ll start with a look at the 2001 Jeep Cherokee overall.

Overview of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

You probably wouldn’t consider an older model Jeep Cherokee in the first place if you didn’t already love the boxy looks of this SUV. The Jeep Cherokee was a sport utility vehicle before SUVs were everywhere, and as such, it set the bar for those to follow.

Since it’s been out of production for a couple decades now, it isn’t all that easy to find a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, but for fans of this Jeep, the hunt is worth it. The Jeep Cherokee was manufactured and marketed in the U.S. from 1983 to 2001, though globally through 2014.

The Cherokee has been available in two- to five-door versions and rear- or four-wheel drive configurations. The Cherokee’s all-new design in 1984 was marketed under the Cherokee XJ model label through the end of its production, with the earliest models marketed as “sportswagons,” the precursor to the sport utility vehicle nomenclature.

The Cherokee’s base trim was marketed as “base” through 1993, and then as “SE,” from 1994 to 2001, when it also became the only trim level available as a two-door model.

The SE Trim: A Closer Look

The 2001 Jeep Cherokee SE has been described as “square, tough and durable.” That’s a pretty accurate description, and for fans of this classic SUV, that’s all that’s necessary.

The SE comes in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive configurations. It’s fueled by a 4.0L SMFI I6 “Power Tech” engine, having done away with the four-cylinder option for 2001. It puts out 190 horsepower with 225 ft. lbs. of torque and gets a respectable 17 mpg city and 23 mpg on the highway.

With its front bucket seats, the Cherokee SE has seating for five. You’ll enjoy about 32.9 cu. ft. of cargo space, increasing to 69 cu. ft. with the rear seat folded down.

Creature comforts may be less than you’ll find in higher trim levels, but you can expect to get vinyl reclining highback front bucket seats and a removable rear folding bench seat with detachable cushion. This Cherokee delivers a basic full floor console, which includes two cupholders, padded armrest and a roomy storage bin with — yes, this was 2001 — CD and cassette storage slots.

The SE has full carpeting throughout the cargo area, along with tie-down loops. Tech is limited to a warning chime when headlamps are left on, and you’ll have to do with an AM/FM stereo radio with cassette player — but what did you really expect from a 2001 Cherokee? You do get a 12-volt power outlet, however.

Jeep tried to add a bit of style to the exterior with black grille and headlamp bezels, along with block fold-away manual mirrors and black fender flares. You’ll also get halogen headlamps and variable intermittent windshield wipers with washers.

Yes, it’s basic, so if you’re looking for more luxury touches, you’ll have to move up to the Sport or Limited trims.
