Trusted, reliable, and a fun car to drive: That’s what you are looking for in your pre-owned vehicle. The 2002 Honda Civic EX caught your eye. It’s super cute, but it is also the type of car that gets you to and from work without breaking your budget on gas.

What does the 2002 Honda Civic EX have to offer?

The Honda Civic EX for 2002 is the third of four trim packages offered for the year. It was available as both a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan. This vehicle offered a 1.7L I-4 engine that produced a respectable 127 horsepower. It was available in six colors, offered front-wheel drive, and had ample room for five people.

These specs have the makings of a very reliable sedan, one that you can still count on nearly two decades later. Before you decide to buy it, we’ll break down some key features for this vehicle and provide you with some insight into what you can expect. Then, check out the 2002 Honda Civic EX’s Vehicle History.

What the Civic EX Has to Offer

If you’re in the market for a pre-owned sedan that’s worth the buy, Honda is the way to go. More specifically, check out the Civic.

This model has been made by the company since 1972 (that’s some reliability), initially as a subcompact car and, from 2000 onward, a compact car. It’s one of the most recognizable cars in the company’s lineup. It wasn’t until the sixth generation, in 1995, that the EX trim model was offered.

Take a look at this in-depth review of the 2002 Honda Civic EX. Remember, this is the third trim model offered this year, with the Si as the highest trim model option.

This video does a good job of breaking down the features of the 2004 Civic EX. What you’ll notice from the beginning is that this sedan has a roomy interior with ample legroom.

It also has the traditional gray interior – one that the Civic has become known for (along with many other vehicles of its day). It’s a smaller car, which means you are not going to get a lot of room to move, but this one is surprisingly spacious.

A key feature to note is the two-tone interior. This was an EX feature at the time. It also offers power windows and doors. Another 2002 addition – chrome handles. The interior dashboard is very basic and normal for its time frame as well.

Check Out the Exterior

The exterior of the Honda Civic EX for 2002 offers a clean, rounded-edged vehicle with ample features throughout. The lights are bigger and brighter than older models. In addition to this, the front chrome-trimmed grille is another feature of this trim. The tires are a simple design and have seven spokes. There are small chrome trim features throughout the exterior as well.

All in all, the exterior of the vehicle is not as impressive as some, but it is the reliability that people buy this vehicle for anyway. Still, it’s a well-made car that stands the test of time.

Let’s Go Under the Hood

When it comes to the driving quality of the 2002 Honda Civic EX, you see superior results, especially for this vehicle’s age. The vehicle offered a 1.7L inline-four engine with a five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The vehicle also offered an optional four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive for those interested in upgrading.

The higher trim model for the 2002 year offered a 2.0L inline-four engine producing 160 horsepower. By comparison, the EX was a solid investment.

When it comes to fuel economy, the 1.7L engine provides 26 city and 35 highway or a combined 30 miles per gallon, by EPA estimates. That’s not the best for its classification, but it is reliable.

A few additional specs to point out include a four-wheel independent suspension, front anti-roll back, and a rack and pinion steering system. It also features a speed-sensing hydraulic power-assist rack-pinon steering option.

For safety, the 2002 Honda Civic EX offered a few nice features like remote keyless entry, ABS, and dual front impact airbags as standard features. Front passenger airbag occupancy sensor was an optional feature.

There was also an optional security system. Though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not provide an overall safety rating, the 2002 Civic received solid positive ratings across the board.

Also notable for those purchasing a pre-owned car are the recalls. The 2002 Honda Civic EX has a total of 24 recalls as of October of 2020. This included concerns with the airbags, exterior lighting, and visibility.

It also had an engine-related problem related to the vehicle’s air cleaner and a problem with the CNG fuel tank thermal insulator.

2002 Honda Civic EX: the frugal mans overall good performer.
I enjoy my 2002 Honda Civic EX very much. I am a very old soul and do not like a lot of electronic devices for safety like traction control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings, etc. My Civic was purchased used at a great price with fairly low mileage as well. It initially had terrible handling, but with some research and parts I remedied that issue as well as improving brake performance. Some items which can be improved which plagued this version of my Civic was a poorly designed automatic transmission. I also can use more leg room and more power in a stiffer chassis. Overall my Civic has been a great investment. Returning great mpg's, reliability and even the occasional admirer.

2002 Honda Civic EX is a safe, quiet bubble of space on busy, crowded, and noisy streets.
Leaky driver's side window, sometimes needs to be manually shifted after moving out of place. Generally reliable otherwise. Easy to maintain, as it is a pretty common vehicle and parts are almost always available. Accelerates a little sluggish sometimes. It is an older car now, with a very out of date and broken sound system, but it is been mostly reliable for safe and fuel-efficient transportation, which is more important than an aux cord installation at the moment. I am satisfied overall, and will keep driving it as long as I can.

2002 Honda Civic EX: a dependable option for manual drivers
This car performs well even though it is old with a fair amount of miles (>115000). Over the years it has required a usual amount of maintenance, with the most recent being replacing the alternator, but this level of repair necessity is uncommon. The interior is comfortable and amenities such as AC and radio are still fully functional. Now that it's older, the oil had to be replaced often, but other than that it doesn't have many issues and is good for anyone who likes a cost effective manual transmission.

2002 Honda Civic EX: 5 speed transmission. Sunroof. Air conditioner.
My Honda is very economical on gas, has ease of the powered windows. My Honda has had little or no repairs...Big repairs...All I do to my car is keep tires balanced with air, rotate tires when needed, change the motor oil every 5,000 miles. I have a lock cover for the gas port, and I get good gas mileage for today's prices. It is a 5 speed transmission, and bucket seats with a factory installed sunroof, power locks and power steering.

2002 Honda Civic EX, third owner 140k miles
It's a relatively comfy car. There's good trunk space and ok leg room. The interior has quoted a bit of wear and tear but nothing unexpected for a car of its age. It does get good gas mileage though which is a plus! It seems to be pretty mechanically sound and I was happy to put lifetime warranty tires and brakes on it recently just because I knew I'd get my money's worth.

Nearly half a million miles! 2002 Honda Civic EX
I cant say enough about this car! It is excellent on gas, fun to drive, spacious. I did have the transmission replaced with a rebuilt, (I heard Honda had troubles with the transmissions for that year.) But get this: MY CIVIC HAS 434,000 MILES ON IT! And it's still going strong! My car is a little powerhouse. I'm a loyal Honda owner for life!

2002 Honda Civic EX is a great family starter vehicle.
Great car for starting a family. It is very spacious and has a nice sized trunk. It also has great gas mileage. Recently my air conditioner went out, but it's an older vehicle so it was expected. My mom had the same car and it lasted her up to 360,000 miles. I'm currently at 150,000 and it still is riding smooth.

2002 Honda Civic EX makes an excellent family travel vehicle.
The Honda civic is a great family car with a roomy interior with lots of leg space and large trunk great for carrying everything the family might need! The seats are very comfortable and because it gets good gas mileage and is super easy to maneuver and park in small spaces it's great for family trips anywhere!

2002 Honda Civic EX is amazing on gas mileage.
This is a good vehicle, drives smoothly and is great on gas. Comfortable to ride or drive in with a perfectly situated arm rest on the driver seat. Spacious back seat and plenty of trunk room. Auto start is extremely helpful in winter and the Heating is great. Handles well and has good but safe acceleration.

2002 Honda Civic EX is the most reliable car.
My vehicle has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Other than normal wear and tear I haven't had any issues with it and it is still providing me with every day transportation. I have 233,000 miles on the car. It is very comfortable and roomy. I would not buy any other car besides a Honda.

2002 Honda Civic EX has been great.
I have a 2002 Honda civic, it definitely has some paint fading and a few dents and dings, but all the while it has been a very safe reliable vehicle with very few issues and I love it. I have not had to do any major pricey mechanical repairs just normal maintenance to it since I have owned my vehicle.

2002 Honda Civic EX..A car worth investing in.
I love my car, its old but rides well. Just have to keep it up to date with tune ups and oil changes. Great on gas and drives smoothly. Has a strong engine and great air condition. Just replaced tires and needs a new paint job. Car is very reliable never really had any issues with it. Would recommend.

Reliable long term transportation: 2002 Honda Civic EX
The reliability on my Honda Civic has been amazing. I have hardly had to spend any money on it in the 5 years that I have owned the car. It's important to just keep up on the daily maintenance. I drive this car daily and sometimes have long commutes. The air conditioning still works great as well.

2002 Honda Civic EX is an amazing car, great gas saver, just over all comfortable and reliable.
I love my car so much, performance is amazing, never had it break down on me ever. Very reliable great gas saver. I have drove from California to Idaho only had to make one stop for gas. Still had half a tank when I stopped. Very comfortable nice seats. Just all in general a wonderful car.

My 2002 Honda Civic EX is the greatest car!
My Honda civic is a great car. It has not let me down. I can drive for 5,000-7,000 miles without getting an oil change. Gas has always been no less than $15.00 to $22.00 to fill it up. It is a smooth ride always as long as the tires are good. It is great on the interstate and highways.

2002 Honda Civic EX is a great vehicle for new drivers as it is great on gas and small.
The one drawback to this. Vehicle is there is no Bluetooth. But other than this the safety features are top notch and it is great on gas. The speakers have good bass and clearing. Easy to clean and easy to find parking for. Also the color is one that does not require high maintenance.

2002 Honda Civic EX is a reliable car.
This is a very good car. It has 270000+ miles. Very good gas mileage. The body is getting rough. It has been a great car. I really enjoy driving it.. The interior hasn't held up as well. I have had severally oil leaks. The gaskets have had to be replaced. But it still runs great.

2002 Honda Civic EX Perfect Car For Anyone Looking For an Easy Reliable Vehicle
Very reliable, I've had no problems. The body is wearing out faster than the car mechanics. It's so easy and comfortable to drive. I love the visibility in all directions. It's small and easy to handle. The sunroof is really nice. The AC is wearing out but the heater works great.

2002 Honda Civic EX is economic in gas. Maintenance is not expensive. It has a sunroof, a trunk
Well I had problems with the transmission a couple of years ago but I fixed it. It's very economic in gas I do maintenance every 3 months and it runs very good. I like the fact that it has a sunroof and the trunk has a lot of space for storage I just can't complain I love it.

A wonderful 2002 Honda Civic EX that is an absolute beauty.
I absolutely love my car. It runs really well. I have absolutely no problems with my car. With the year now being 2019 and my car being a 2002 I couldn't believe how great the car was kept, ran, etc. Its extremely clean and very spacious. I wouldn't trade my car for anything.
accountCircle Jimmy R on June 3, 2021
2002 Honda Civic EX still running great!
I do not have any problems with this vehicle. After seven years of ownership, the transmission failed and I had it replaced. It is an excellent running vehicle that still gets 35-37 MPG. It has good acceleration, and the interior and exterior are still in good condition.

2002 Honda Civic EX: Great car with paint issue.
The Honda Civic is a great car. They hold up well and don't require a lot of maintenance. They last a long time. The only issue I have is the blue paint from 2002 peels badly. I have seen other cars from around this time and they are peeling as well.
