Most cars on the road today are reasonably safe, but if you haven’t checked your car for recalls recently, there could be open safety recalls on your vehicle that need to be addressed. Even if there aren’t any recalls, underlying problems can cause safety issues on the road.

On the 2005 Jeep Wrangler specifically, have there been any recalls on the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM)? As of August 2020, no; however, owners have frequently filed complaints about issues caused by a faulty PCM, such as:

  • Engine stalls
  • O2 sensor warnings
  • Transmission issues

If you drive a 2005 Jeep Wrangler, you’ll want to be aware of these complaints. We’ve dug through the NHSTA’s complaints on this vehicle to summarize a few of the most common PCM issues below so you can keep an eye out for similar problems with your own Jeep.

Engine Stall Due to Defective Power Control Module (PCM)

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11128130

In May of 2018, one 2005 Jeep Wrangler owner reported that the vehicle has stalled in traffic multiple times with no warning. Most commonly, the stall occurs after the vehicle has been stopped at a red light or parked. Upon having the vehicle inspected at a dealer, the problem was determined to be a defective powertrain control unit.

O2 Sensor Problems Caused By a Faulty PCM

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11044479

Another 2005 Wrangler owner filed a report related to PCM issues in November of 2017. Specifically, this driver has experienced frequent “check engine” illuminations on the dashboard. Upon having the problem code checked at a dealer, the issue was found to be an O2 sensor, which was replaced entirely. Still, the issue has continued to repeat itself. The owner believes this is caused by an underlying issue with the PCM.

Transmission Issues Due to Defective PCM

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11181802

This complaint, which was filed in 2019 by a 2005 Wrangler owner, states that the vehicle is having transmission warning lights illuminating on the dashboard. Furthermore, the transmission itself is slow to shift between drive and reverse and occasionally emits a grinding noise. The owner believes these issues have been caused by a faulty PCM but has not had the problem specifically diagnosed or repaired.
