If you’re interested in buying a used car, you may be starting to do some research. One thing that you might have searched is, “what’s the oil type and capacity for a 2012 Toyota Camry?”

If you don’t change your oil regularly or use the wrong kind, then your engine could suffer serious consequences and damage. Here’s more information about the oil you should use.

2012 Toyota Camry: What is the oil type and capacity?

The 2012 Toyota Camry uses a few types of oil and holds between 4.5 and 6.4 quarts of oil depending on the engine. The oils that it may use include:

  • SAE 5W-20
  • SAE 0W-20

Generally speaking, 0W-20 needs to be used, but in a pinch, 5W-20 may be used for one oil change cycle.

In this article, we’ll discuss the two engine types, how much oil the Toyota Camry can hold and the type of oil you should use.

Keep Up on Oil Changes in Your Vehicle

Looking at the 2012 Toyota Camry, you’ll be happy to know that it doesn’t require as frequent of oil changes as some vehicles. You can wait between 7,500 and 10,000 miles if you use synthetic oil.

Toyota recommends that you change your oil and filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if you decide to use conventional oil.

An oil change is a laborious service, but the good news is that there are inexpensive options available to you if you don’t want to change your oil yourself.

When you select an oil, you’ll have the option of synthetic, a synthetic blend, or conventional oil. Opt for synthetic when possible, since it’s the highest grade. Also remember to use SAE 0W-20 oil whenever you can, as it’s recommended by Toyota.

The 2012 Toyota Camry has two possible engines, the 2.5L and the 3.5L. In the 2.5L (153 ci) engine, you need to use 4.5 quarts of SAE 0W-20 oil. In the 3.5L (211 ci) engine, you need to use 6.4 quarts of the SAE 0W-20 oil.

In the case that the lower-viscosity oil is not available, you can use the common SAE 5W-20 for one oil change. The next time you have your oil changed, make sure that you have SAE 0W-20 available.

You need to change your oil between 3,000 and 10,000 miles, depending on the kind of oil you use. You’ll be able to wait longer if you use synthetic oil.

2012 Toyota Camry: Recalls and Oil Issues

One good bit of advice for anyone who is looking to buy a vehicle is to head over the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website to read about recalls and consumer complaints.

On the website hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there is at least one consumer who has made a complaint about the oil in the 2012 Toyota Camry.

According to this consumer, the vehicle, which was now at 110,000 miles, was burning up to three quarts of oil between oil changes.

A second consumer made a complaint that their vehicle was consuming excessive amounts of oil as well. They reported the vehicle burning between half a quarter or more of oil between oil changes.

Finally, there was a third consumer who reported that their vehicle started burning oil at the 120,000-mile mark. They also reported a check engine light with that defect.

As of 2020, this model has not had any open recalls related to oil issues or the engine.
