2014 Ford Escape

The 2014 Ford Escape has a lot of problems. Under the hood you’ll find oil leaks, antifreeze leaks, and frayed shift cables. In the body, you’ve got loose door latches and exploding sunroofs, and in the cabin you have seat adjusters that might just chew up the seats.

  • The 2014 Ford Escape earned mostly Good ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash test, excepting a couple of Poor ratings for driver and passenger side front impact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported similar findings with with a four-star overall rating.
  • Oil leaks and cylinder misfires are among the leading engine issues for 2014 Escape owners.
  • Structural issues include loose door latches and bad welds in the seats.
  • The 2014 Escape has been recalled twice for rollaway, but this is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to transmission problems.
  • With so many reliable used SUVs on the market, there’s no good reason to buy a 2014 Ford Escape.

Engine Problems Include Oil Leaks, Overheating, Stalling

A small recall was issued in 2014 for just over 300 units with cracked fuel delivery modules. In early 2015, there was a recall for improper plating on the fuel pump which could result in engine stall in over 54,000 units. In 2017, a recall covering over 208,000 units addressed an oil leak in the engine cylinder head.

Any one of these issues can be disastrous, and collectively they spell out a pattern of structural issues throughout the whole engine. There are nearly 500 engine complaints on file, making up over a third of the 1,455 total. Many of these complaints have been registered after the latest engine recall.

Several complaints, both recent and not-so-recent, report antifreeze leaking into the cylinder and causing misfires. Early signs of the problem usually include overheating, burning odors, and smoke coming from the engine.

Failure mileage is typically reported at somewhere past the 100,000 mark, and most 2014 Escapes already cleared that number years ago. It may be difficult to drive a 2014 Escape with confidence knowing just how many things can go wrong under the hood.

Loose Door Latches Lead a Long List of Structural Issues

2014 Ford Escape

There was a recall for loose door latches in 2016, and another in 2020, covering millions of Ford units in total. There have been several complaints of doors popping open since then. There have also been recalls for bad welds and loose bolts in the seat assemblies, and loose sunroofs.

In addition to the structural problems that have already been acknowledged by Ford, there are reports of seats burning hot as a result of bad wiring. Also, seats being shredded by the adjustment mechanisms, and door panels coming loose.

Based on the complaints you’ll find listed with the NHTSA, you should count yourself lucky if you can find a 2014 Ford Escape that’s still in one piece. There are simply a lot of issues with doors, panels, latches, sunroofs, and seats in this vehicle.

Some of these issues have been recalled and others haven’t, so there’s not much that you can do about this but to run a thorough inspection along with the test-drive. Adjust the seats, check every door, mirror, and window, and make sure nothing feels like it was attached with Elmer’s glue.

Unintentional Rollaway Leads to Two Recalls

A pair of recalls issued in 2018 and 2022 resulted in nearly three and a half million notices being sent out for a potential rollaway. In affected vehicles, the cable bushing used to shift into park could degrade or detach. This could result in your Escape failing to shift into park, and rolling down inclines.

Unfortunately, this might not be all there is to the car’s powertrain problems. There are 372 powertrain complaints on file in total, with the most recent coming from a driver whose VIN was not included in the recall, and who is seeing their transmission jump between gears seemingly at random.

Another driver reports the transmission slipping while driving, and that the vehicle would need to warm up for a full half hour every morning before even shifting into gear. Some drivers report that they were included in the powertrain recalls, but are still waiting on replacement parts.

If you’re shopping for a 2014 Ford Escape, the best way to avoid being stuck with a bad transmission is to check the VIN and see if the vehicle was included in any powertrain recalls. Check to see if the repairs were already completed. You don’t want to get stuck on a waiting list.

Don’t Buy a 2014 Ford Escape

2014 Ford Escape

If someone gives you a 2014 Ford Escape for free, great. If they’re willing to trade you one for your old bicycle, cool. But these things start out in the $15,000 range and go well past twenty grand in the Blue Book. You don’t want to spend that much money on an SUV with this many engine and powertrain problems.

Something like a 2015 Hyundai Tucson will cost about the same, but has only generated a single recall and fewer than 200 user complaints as of the time of this writing. If you want to go a little newer, the 2019 Ford Escape comes with far fewer problems under the hood than the 2014 edition.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it, the 2014 Ford Escape simply hasn’t aged well.

Worst Love Lost
The Worst Love Lost I thought this car would be a great fit for me, boy was I ever wrong! Being I have a 2002 Ford Escape that has hardly costed me anything in the time since purchase, seeing a 2014 and having a need for a easier to access car for my then mother to get in and out of would be a great choice. After all, several government agencies use Ford Escapes and being I believe in buying American I opted to purchase an extended warranty on my new yet used Ford Escape. Good thing I did , cause at 90K miles the transmission just went out, no bells or whistles or lights just noticed a hard slip while driving and drove to the dealer (again Thank God I had the Warranty) that was 5K in repairs for a new transmission. With that behind me I was feeling a bit better. UNTIL, at 116K no lights, no smoke, no water dripping no service warning did the dang thing run hot and cracked the head ( so we tried the blue block) never do that cause the whole motor is shot at that point . Here's the kicker it cost as much to replace the heads it is does the whole engine cause of the way they have everything crammed under the hood. And a new motor is 8K from Ford and 4,500.00 best used with acceptable mileage below 60K . Heart broken to say the least , can't afford a FORD they don't make them like the old ones, the ones that last. I'll never buy another for sure! What stinks , is all the mechanics and people I've spoken too in recent months say Ford knows they have issues with this SUV and should recall it but haven't yet. Im holding out hope they will do the right thing and fix peoples SUVs . For now still driving around the 2002 with almost 300K miles.I understand mechanical things happen but why have a on board computer that doesn't alert you to a problem is not right.

A piece of c**p
2014 2L ecoboost engine AWD,the truck has been nothing but a headache. With 150k the engine lost power and after beingdiagnosed by our local dealership we found out that the engine suffered piston failure ($5000 to repair). At which time they also replaced the timing chain and water pump. All without warranty mind you. Now with 225k the timing chain failed again (no warranty) and out of pocket $2000 parts and labor. And every deal I went to said 1 year or 25k warranty ,which is a joke. Just a piece of junk, will never again buy or recommend a Ford product to anyone.

107,000 Km , parts are failing
At 107,000 Km i have replaced a wheel bearing, and just this week i hear a whining noise, thought it was the transmission, as I have heard a few horror stories about the transmission, brought it in to a transmission shop. Low and behold its the Hanger bearing on the rear drive shaft that attaches to the transmission. Great, I thought, just replace the bearing.... Oh no you cant do that, I have to replace the entire drive shaft... WTF, I just need a hanger bearing... Nope cant do that. Car companies are crooks, just like most corporations.... Stay away.

American cars 2014 Ford Escape
I bought a 2014 Ford Escape few years ago. It has been giving a lot of headaches the engine leaks oil. The anti coolant reservoir has been replaced two times in the last two years it keeps cracking and leaks. There are problems with the gas gauge in the dashboard does not give an accurate reading of the amount of gas that is in the fuel tank. This the last Americans car I will buy, American cars sucks, what a shame, No wonder the Koreans, the Japanish are liking a our a*s.

Why not to buy a used titanium!
Not a comfortable ride loads of squeaky noises from the seats and the dash... I was hoping it was programmable with all Wi-Fi devices but it is not. There are several blind spots while driving and the alarms go off randomly in the driveway while I am getting ready to back out. It is a mystery vehicle for sure, again not comfortable.

I think it is too expensive for all it is issues.
Computer is always having issues (intermittent) so they can never find the issue. Has a lot of recalls. My back door open whenever it wanted. My tailgate lifts on its own. It leaked for 2 years before they found the issue. The camera comes on whenever it wants. It has too many issues to list them all but those are the main ones.

Do your research.
The panoramic roof rattles while driving. The main touch screen stopped working and had to be replaced at 48,000 miles. There is an added part to the engine valve that no other cars have. It stops working every once and a while that causes the engine light to go on. Seems to depend on the outside temperature.

2014 ford escape problems.
I bought the car brand new and the transmission just went out at 6 years, right outside of warranty. It has had countless recalls including a latch problem on the hatch, the passenger door handle gets stuck especially after rain and the door can open up while driving,

Cracked Mechanism and no coolant
Mechanism that held coolant cracked really easily. I was driving and the air conditioning stopped working and it never notified me that the coolant was getting low so the engine started overheating. Had to take it to a mechanic and thankfully it wasn't too expensive

Lots of problems, unfortunately.
I have had so many problems with my car. Breaks, power steering going out, not. Starting, etc. It seems like I am in the auto shop paying for repairs every two or three months. I know multiple people who have the same car and love it, but I have always had problems.

Escape from the ford escape.
I purchased the car used and have had to take to the shop 5 times. The back brakes have been fixed 3 times. Hill assist and 4wd will turn on and off while I am driving or at a complete stop. The heater takes a long time to heat up. I am at work before it gets warm.

Not comfortable and size is not only small but little power.
Multiple recalls. Too small to be comfortable. Very low power when needing to pass on interstate. Difficult to connect phone to its media sources. Recall for coolant problem that still continues to give a problem. Will no longer purchase any ford product.
accountCircle Rachel F on November 26, 2022
Should have bought another car.
I bought a used Ford Escape. Some features don't quite work anymore. Had to put a new transmission in the car less than a week after buying it used. Gas gauge jumps around and if I go too fast on the freeway the ac starts giving out and blows no air.
accountCircle Dee D on November 26, 2022
Do not buy a ford escape for your car.
It is not very comfortable on long trips. Not a lot of legroom in front seat. Cup holders are placed too far to rear of front compartment back seat passengers do not have enough leg room. When putting back seats down they do not lay completely flat.
accountCircle Ashley S on November 26, 2022
Entertainment system faulty.
The vehicle has had a lot of recalls. It is also had a lot of issues and things that have gone wrong in the short time I have owned it. The technology for the entertainment system is not reliable.

Not crazy about this SUV. Too many maintenance issues.
Needed entire engine and transmission replaced before 100k miles due to defect. Nice features but some bugs with the built in nav system/ touch screen.

Have had numerous issues with doors wherein inner panel comes loose after shutting doors. Now fan only works on highest setting.

This is a very bad car for tall people to ride in.
The vehicle is too small. The vehicle does not have enough leg room. The vehicle does not run very well in bad weather.

Why not to get it... Problem after problem
Suspension is easy to mess up. The alignment goes out after one bump. Gear shift cable is faulty. Speakers s**k

Transmission died twice, first time after 100 thousand miles.
Transmission died twice, air conditioning went out. Smallish SUV so not the greatest for space. Ok car.
accountCircle Tyler A on November 26, 2022
My last ford had transmission issues, and then this one does too. I don't trust american transmissions anymore.
My transmission went out right after my warranty ended, and it cost me 2000... I really didn't have.
accountCircle Valerie C on November 26, 2022
Check for recalls. Problems occurred right as warranty ended.
