2014 Ford Escape Titanium Review: A Small SUV With Premium Features and Expensive Problems

Jan 25, 2022

The 2014 Ford Escape Titanium is the flagship model at $13,471 to $16,280. The Titanium offers good luxury, but is still plagued by awful reliability. With more problems than competing SUVs, and a short lifespan of 150,000 miles, we recommend buyers look elsewhere.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
There are luxury features including high-end leather and trim commonly found in more expensive SUVs, as well as better technology than some rivals.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Reliability ratings are still low similar to the other Escape models, and safety ratings are worse than the competitors.

Ford titanium can really tow.
We purchased a ford escape titanium primarily because we wanted a car that could tow our pop up camper. This car can tow up to 3500 pounds. The only time we had problems towing was when we were in Colorado going up and down in the mountains in the summer and it overheated a little. This car is quiet, requires little maintenance, and is comfortable for a family of four.

This car is beyond spacious and convenient!
I have always bought fords; I love their convenience of trucks and SUV's. One of my favorite parts of the ford escape I drive is the no-hands back door - it makes loading groceries, shopping, and furniture into the back the easiest! I am also a fan of how long the 2014 titanium model is; I can get wood from the hardware store and not have to cut it down a ton (or at all!) For it to fit fully inside the car.

2014 ford escape/spaceship.
So far, I have had very few problems with my vehicle (outside of the tires), and I have owned for 6+ year now. The car is very spacious and great for long road trips. Roof rack also is great for ski trips. The Sony sound system is amazing and the touch screen capabilities on the dash make driving easy and convenient.

The Ford Escape 2014 is very user friendly and just a genuinely good family car
I haven't had any major problems with this car. Speed builds up nicely I love driving it. Very reliable because it tells us what's going on with the car all the time with the screen features I know how many miles I have before my gas tank is full and if anything in my car needs maintenance. The light feature under the seats are cool too ! Seats are always comfy and there is plenty of room for me and my family for trips ! Great car !

Forever escape owner onto my third one!
This is my second escape and I love them! Only have ever needed regular routine maintenance and really enjoy driving it. Enough room for road trips but not too big to have to worry about gas mileage. I have already decided that my next vehicle will be another ford escape.

My ford titanium was like going from an abacus to a smartphone.
This is a reliable, efficient SUV. It has 90,000 miles on it with little or no body damage. It required no additional maintenance above the recommended maintenance by ford. It has all of the accessories available at the time of purchase except a sunroof ( I did not want this). It has heated seats and mirrors which continue to operate properly. It has an excellent warning system for problems are displayed in a fashion that is easy to understand. It has a state of the art cooling system with separate control for people sitting in the backseat. It has ample storage, charging outlets front and rear seat passengers. Seating is comfortable and my passengers enjoy the ride. It has great safety features e.G. Notification of traffic approaching on the either side of the car, potential crash warning, a self parking system, auto lock and a warning alarm if the key is left in the car. It gets great mileage and rides well. My only complaint is the map system. It is old, upgrades cost over $100.00 and they are substandard. The google app or siri on my phone is ten times better. I called ford and they said they knew it was limited and incorrect. The person that took the call agree with me and didn't think it would improve. Ford should be embarrassed.

Love my ford escape titanium!
The 2014 ford escape titanium is a very reliable vehicle. I have not had any mechanical issues with this SUV since I purchased it 4 years ago. I do regular oil changes, tire maintenance and do not let the fuel get too low. The interior or the vehicle has all the bells and whistles except for a sunroof, which is fine with me. It has heated seats, remote start, keyless entry, cruise control and SiriusXM to name a few features I use regularly. The seats are very comfortable and I am able to withstand long trips with no discomfort. Just take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you!

Minimal issues for my ford escape 2014.
Running pretty good had some issues with the turbo at first but was an easy fix, it was just loose and they had to tighten it up. The gears got stuck a couple times with the transmission but only did it twice and never again. Other than those two things it has been a good car so far.

Heated seats are wonderful but GPS is terrible.
Rear trunk - door feature does not work. Vehicle makes lots of air noise. Does not run smoothly- rather jerks all the time. GPS - have to purchase new every year and it works poorly sending you in the wrong direction. Lots of bells and whistles but I wish the basics features work and extra vehicle coverage always denied.
accountCircle Chloe B
Gets me where I need to go, but that is it… and sometimes not even that.
Not the most comfortable, technical issues since a few months after purchase, a little too narrow for comfort in comparison to previous vehicle, parking sensors no longer sound and cannot figure out why it is happening, parasitic drain on car battery.
accountCircle John S
Ford escape: fun interior but cramped.
The interior of the front of the car is well thought out and comfortable. The back seats however are very cramped and do not get great airflow. The trunk is spacious enough for decent amounts of storage. The engine block is cramped and has very convoluted space usage making simple repairs and tune ups difficult and time consuming.
accountCircle Madelyn O
A nice vehicle if you do not drive a lot or do not have kids.
The vehicle driver seat is uncomfortable for long periods of time. It has large blind spots and does not have much room to carry anything. Car seats fit but seats have to be adjusted to not interferes causing the driver and passenger to be uncomfortable.
accountCircle AJ N
White SUVs are hard to find in parking lots.
Overall it is a good small SUV. It drives well and is good on snow covered roads in winter. The biggest problems we have are minor annoyances for repairs. Recently we had to be towed and it took several days to find and replace a sensor that malfunctioned. Several times the lift gate has hit me in the head closing while I am loading groceries-this also happened to my mother-in-law with her escape. And just yesterday it somehow locked me out of the car with my keys still inside-no alarms. I had just exited the driver's door to get at my groceries in the back. Gas mileage is just okay but the power is good. And it maneuvers well.
accountCircle Rhonda P
Pros and cons of titanium.
The rear door does not always open. If the battery dies, you cannot get in the vehicle at all. It is comfortable for riding. I like the dual climate control. I like the space in the trunk. I wish it had better air vents in the back for air conditioning and heat.
accountCircle Kristina J
Overall reliable, smaller crossover.
The vehicle has had a lot of recalls. It has been reliable in regards to other major concerns. The screws on the bottom panel are easily stripped as they are plastic and therefore need replacing often. There is not a lot of space in the back seat for a child's legs in a car seat.
accountCircle Leslie A
Why not to buy a used titanium!
Not a comfortable ride loads of squeaky noises from the seats and the dash... I was hoping it was programmable with all Wi-Fi devices but it is not. There are several blind spots while driving and the alarms go off randomly in the driveway while I am getting ready to back out. It is a mystery vehicle for sure, again not comfortable.

What Is The 2014 Ford Escape Titanium Worth?

The 2014 Ford Escape Titanium is available, used, from $13,471 to $16,280. Trade in values range from $9,105 to $11,280, depending on the condition. Depreciation is average, losing about 45% of the value over the first 5 years.

How Long Will The Ford Escape Titanium Last?

A properly maintained 2014 Ford Escape Titanium will last about 150,000 miles, slightly shorter than some of the competition. Maintenance costs are more expensive than other compact SUVs, and Repair Pal estimates them to be $640 per year.

There are some common items which will need to be replaced on a used Escape after they reach 100,000 miles. The list includes drive belt tensioners for $170, blower motors at around $300, and exhaust gas recirculation valves costing $200.

What Problems Does The Ford Escape Titanium Have?

The 2014 Ford Escape Titanium may be the most expensive of Ford’s compact SUVs, but it still suffers from the same problems found on entry-level models. There are no serious improvements in reliability until you reach the 2017 model year, which costs over $7,000 more.

Transmission failures are very common on the 2014 Ford Escape, and happen around every 70,000 miles. Replacing the transmission costs about $4,200, depending on local labor rates. With common transmission failures, we recommend shoppers look elsewhere.

Premature brake wear is another frequent issue, according to owners. The stock pads and rotors are weaker than some competitors, and wear out in under 30,000 miles. If the brakes wear out, the only solution is to replace them, costing $300 to $400.

Engine problems, including overheating, also happen regularly. Engines tend to overheat when there are radiator problems, as well as failed head gaskets. Costs depend on the source of the problem, but can be over $1,500 in the worst case scenario of a head gasket failure.

There are 14 recalls on the 2014 Escape, which is worse than many other compact SUVs from the same year. They include seat welds, air bags, doors opening while driving, panoramic roof glass failures, engine wiring splices, fuel delivery module, instrument cluster, and the cylinder head leaking oil. All are serious, affecting the mechanical reliability of the vehicle.

How Is the EcoBoost Engine and Towing?

Performance in the 2014 Ford Escape Titanium is good for the class, taking 7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour with the upgraded EcoBoost engine. A properly equipped Escape Titanium is also capable of towing more than other compact SUVs from the same year, at up to 3,500 pounds.

  • The base engine in the Titanium model is the 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo with 178 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • An optional upgrade is the EcoBoost 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo which has 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

Is The 2014 Ford Escape Titanium A Good SUV?

No, the 2014 Ford Escape Titanium is not a good SUV based on information including 1,481 verified owner reviews, and 11 government and automotive websites. There are too many problems to recommend an Escape Titanium over better compact SUVs including the CR-V and RAV4, which are also more affordable.

The main positives of the Titanium model are a more luxurious interior, and better technology than the base models. Some downsides include lower safety scores than rivals, and serious mechanical problems. Overall, none of the 2014 Ford Escape models are good, and spending more for a top-of-the-line Titanium model is not worth the extra cost.

Cracked cylinder head
Purchased mine used, it was leased prior.. The car itself is a comfortable ride, all the bells and whistles, kept up on maintenance, put less than 30k miles in the 6 years I’ve owned it, sent it to the dealer to address recalls, took it home, noticed smoke, and a constant low system coolant alarm. Turns out to be a cracked cylinder head, which wasn’t there before it was brought to the dealer, but hey, no one wants to take responsibility for anything.I will never buy another Ford again.

Great gas mileage and comfortable to drive.
I really like the space inside of my car. It drives smoothly and is relatively low maintenance. It has a lot of features that I do not use, but I would purchase this kind of vehicle again. I would choose a different color. It is good on gas, but has very little pick up. I like a vehicle with a little more get-up-and-go.

I have never had any issues with this car. I have put so many miles on it and have kept up with routine maintenance. It is been extremely reliable. I have had it for 6 years now and have only been in one fender bender and it was completely fine. The interior has held up over time. I had a large sales territory when I bought it and it is been perfect for what I needed it for.

I love how smooth the ride is on my compact SUV. The heated seats and remote start are amazing since we live in Idaho and it is cold. It is comfortable for long trips and has tons of room. I also dig our panoramic sunroof. So far it has treated us very well with no major issues or problems and the gas mileage is awesome.

The redesigned 2020 ford escape finishes in the top third of our compact SUV rankings. It has a great predicted reliability rating, a spacious interior, and engaging performance, but it's middling interior quality keeps it from being a class leader. Overall very reliable vehicle.

The escape is a very comfortable car. With all leather seats it feels nice to be in. Further the heated seats are a big advantage in the winter. First of all the car is very reliable even after thousands of miles and for long road trips the car never breaks down. I have taken many road trips in it and the gas mileage is about average. Also the tires seem to last for a long time. Continuing on, there is a good amount of room in the trunk. It also is kind of fast surprisingly. 2014 ford escape (titanium), pros and cons.
The 2014 ford escape is a great car and the ecoboost is a plus. It is a very reliable car and I take it everywhere. The only problem is that it does not have the greatest gas mileage. Good car, some mechanical worries.
I have a love hate relationship with this car. I love the smaller size of the SUV, and I love the look. I get good gas mileage, the leather interior is a huge bonus. It drives well, and it is been decently reliable. However, a year after purchasing it (it was 2 years old at the time) my transmission started failing. There are no recalls, but I have read a lot of people having the same issue. I wish the back seat was a little more spacious. Other than those two things, I enjoy the car.

Nothing but praise for the escape.
I have nothing but praise for my escape. Living in a city where we can have all four seasons in one week requires a dependable vehicle and I found that in the escape. The upgrades of the titanium are worth. I appreciate the safety features, the small warning light in the side mirrors when there is a car next to me when driving, the warning sounds when approaching an item both backing up and at the front end. The placement of air bags were also a large factor in vehicle shopping. The only thing I would change would be to have the car sit higher off of the ground.

A reliable family vehicle.
The escape is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I have driven it halfway across the country and have no hesitation that it will get me anywhere I need to go. My biggest grievance is that the engine bay is fairly cramped, making it very difficult to work on it mechanically. The upside to that is the vehicle does not need anything other than standard maintenance typically. The battery is difficult to access. The interior is spacious while still being an overall compact car. Most important, my dog loves riding in the escape!

It gets me where I need to go, but it does have issues
I really enjoyed this vehicle at first. Then I had issues with it that made it more of a headache than anything. First the transmission went out. It was under warranty so it didn't cost me to fix it, but it must have been a problem for a lot of these vehicles. It took me almost 3 months to get my car back due to the transmissions being sold out. Then I've had issues with both the battery and the air conditioner. We just replaced the battery and it seems to be doing better, but the air conditioner just randomly goes out. Now that I've had another baby, it's also not big enough for two car seats and our teenager to ride comfortably in the back seat.

Ford escape family car- great for road trips & reliability.
The turning radius is okay but for a larger vehicle it works. The space inside is great but it is a wide vehicle. And since the vehicle sits so high when you go over bumps it shakes the car more than other cars that feel more stable. Good family car.

The only problem I have had with this vehicle is a rattling noise in the back. The lateral control arms were changed to fix the problem but the rattling persists. The performance is great it has great take off and smooth ride. It is a very comfortable vehicle and has heated seats, Bluetooth technology, navigation system, leather interior. I feel very safe driving in this car with my two year old and it has a decent amount of space in the trunk. I am all about music so I love the Bluetooth features so I can sync my phone and play my apple music.

Cool features of 2014 ford escape.
I like that the vehicle is 4 wheel drive, which is great for the snow, it lets you know when you need an oil change and if your tire pressure is low. It has lights on the inside of the vehicle that you can change the color of and heated seats. I also like that it has a moonroof even though I do not use it too often.

Comfort, reliable with loads of options and space.
Working the heater in it, we are just getting it to work properly. Currently, we have had no further issues with our vehicle. It has a good ride. I love the features, especially the Bluetooth to my phone. It is hands free and convenient to operate. It is very comfortable with loads of space to carry groceries.

If you are looking for a family car look no further!
I love my ford escape. It has great gas mileage and runs great. It is a 2014 and we bought it used. We have had little no problems besides replacing tires. The truck is really spacious as well as the back seat. I have the titanium edition so it is got a lot of bells and whistles. Great radio, heated seats and steering wheel controls. Which I love so I can focus on driving verses messing with the radio or anything else.
