Key Points

  • The 2014 Subaru Forester SUV has been recalled two times for malfunctioning brake lights and floor mats interfering with pedals.
  • Of the 338 complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 90 relate to the suspension, with faulty rear coil springs cited as the most common issue.
  • Many 2014 Forester owners have reported problems with unintended acceleration and deceleration, as well as excessive oil consumption and a malfunctioning airbag sensor.
  • Despite a few hiccups, the 2014 Forester is one of the best SUVs of its time, with few significant issues and a 4.5-star rating out of five with Vehicle History owners.

2014 Subaru Forester’s Two Recalls Cover Brake Lights not Illuminating Properly and Floor Mats Curling Behind Brake and Gas Pedals

The 2014 Subaru Forester is a compact SUV that offers two four-cylinder engine options across six different trims. It’s been subject to two recalls by the NHTSA.

The first recall regards malfunctioning brake lights and affects Foresters from 2014 to 2016. According to Subaru, a malfunctioning brake light switch may prevent the brake lights from illuminating. The defect may also keep keyless ignition vehicles from starting, and CVT/automatic transmissions from being able to be shifted out of Park.

To rectify the issue, Subaru dealers will replace the brake light switch free of charge.

The second recall was issued over carpeted floor mats in some 2014 Foresters that may curl when exposed to heat and interfere with the foot pedals.

Thankfully, Subaru has provided remedies for both of these problems. Registered owners can visit dealers to have their old floor mats swapped out with new ones free of charge.

Broken Coil Springs are a Common Problem Reported by 2014 Forester Owners in the NHTSA’s Nearly 350 Registered Complaints

The NHTSA has just shy of 350 consumer complaints on file from 2014 Forester owners, and most of the feedback revolves around the vehicle’s suspension, with reports of rear coil overs breaking unexpectedly.

There doesn’t seem to be a clear pattern; some owners were driving on the highway when one of the rear coil springs collapsed with a loud metal bang, and others just saw bits and pieces of their Forester’s coil springs on their garage floor.

Both rear coil springs on the 2014 Forester seem to be problematic. Some owners even reported having to replace coil springs on both sides. It wouldn’t cost a fortune to replace them, but if one collapses while driving at higher speeds, it can lead to a sudden shift in the car’s balance, causing hazardous situations.

Even though it seems to be a recurring theme in many 2014 Foresters, there have been no investigations or recalls regarding this problem.

Additionally, at least two drivers have complained about wobbles and unsteady steering at speeds around 50 mph on the highway.

Several 2014 Forester Drivers Note Unexpected Changes in Acceleration, Excessive Oil Consumption, and Malfunctioning Airbag Systems

Of the 338 NHTSA complaints, 57 are under “Engine” and 30 under “Powertrain.” Many of these complaints are specifically about unanticipated accelerations or a sudden reduction in speed. One owner complained about unintended acceleration “upon stepping on the brake pedal after stopping for a red light.” Several reports mentioned the gas pedal revving the engine without sending the power to the wheels.

Another engine-related problem has to do with oil consumption. Several 2014 Forester owners reported having the oil light turned on soon after adding oil, and it seems to be a recurring problem in one or two other model years of the Subaru Forester as well.

A few complaints are pointing out the failure of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in certain Subaru models, including the Forester, which have made Subaru of America extend the warranty and partially address some CVT problems.

In some 2014 Foresters, the airbag’s occupant detection system seems to incorrectly detect a passenger when there isn’t one, which causes the seat belt warning to chime. Some owners have reportedly spent more than a thousand dollars to fix this issue.

Some of the 36 complaints under “Electrical System” note the horn suddenly ceasing to work. Others have complained about a malfunctioning backup camera that works periodically.

Serious Suspension and Engine Problems Make the 2014 Subaru Forester a Questionable SUV

The 2014 Forester comes with great qualities, such as a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA, and impressive fuel consumption rates at 27 mpg combined (24 city/31 highway) with the 2.5L four-cylinder engine option. However, it is prone to some severe problems.

The 2014 Forester’s two recalls include malfunctioning brake lights and floor mat problems that affect the use of the brake and accelerator pedals. However, owners have filed complaints about quite a few more concerns, including excessive oil consumption and unintended acceleration.

Despite these reported issues, the 2014 Subaru remains among the top 10 best Compact SUVs of 2014, according to J.D. Power. Also, the majority of real owner reviews on Vehicle History are positive for the 2014 Forester, providing an overall rating of 4.5 out of five stars.

2014 Subaru is a lemon
Bought my 2014 Subaru 3 years ago and still paying on it. I've had to fix my front suspension four times already, and that's with Subaru parts and non-subaru parts. My garage can't figure out why it keeps breaking. Went to Subaru to get an oil change because they sent me a coupon so I figured why not. They are trying to say that I need work on my engine that's going to require them to replace all my gaskets and reseal the engine and they suggested since they were going to have the engine already out to also do my head gasket for a total of $4,300! I almost had a panic attack until I talked to my brother, who unfortunately lives too far away, to get a second opinion. I went to my local Firestone who has always been honest and reasonable and they said that while my engine has started leaking it's not enough to get all that work done right now. They suggested a couple of gaskets to be replaced for a total of under $500. Will never go to Subaru again to get anything fixed because to me they seem very dishonest and just want to bankrupt you. I constantly have to put at least a quart of oil in every 3,000 miles, and that's ever since I got the car pretty much. Subaru was trying to say it was because of the leaks, and if that was the case then I've had the leak since I first bought the car which means they knowingly sold me a broke car and never said anything. I've literally put thousands of dollars into this car and it seems the problems are never ending. No more Subarus for me after I pay this one off.

Costly Repairs
My Forester was great until I hit the 80K mile mark and the low oil level light came on. Took the car to the dealer and it was determined that oil consumption was an issue. Subaru paid for the small engine block replacement and it took care of the oil consumption issue for about 6 months and then my oil level came on again at 128,033 miles. As of 08/25/2020, the car is back on an oil consumption check monitoring by the dealer. Around this time period, my check engine light came on and it was diagnose error code “P0700 Active” and “P2762 History” recommended replacing valve body assembly which is kind of rare, nonetheless, Subaru indicated repairs are not covered under warranty because the mileage on the car is over 100K. Cost of repairs was $1,710 parts & labor. Note: Most of my driving commute are freeway mileage Overall this is my 3rd Subaru and the Forester model cost of repairs are starting to be too disturbing

Afraid it will leave me stranded.
I have grown afraid of driving it for two reasons: The oil light has come on twice. I learned to carry oil with me at all times. Then, I decided to get the oil changed every 3000 miles after the light went on again. I now have almost 34,000 miles on it and they tell me I have a transmission leak . I am now venturing into the process Subaru has established with its "extended CVT warranty". I am not car savvy at all. When I have needed a new car I would consult Consumer Reports and buy one of the ones they recommended. I don't trust Consumer Reports anymore and I don't trust Subaru. I have always only wanted a car that would not leave me stranded. Twice this car has scared me already and made me pull over. Now with this l don't know. I don't know how people deal with having car problems. I don't like it and I do not think we should have to tolerate it with a new car.

Hatch dangerous if piston goes
Right from day one we have had issues with the car. We picked it up and it was noisy, rattling, they said they repacked the dash but didn't make much of a difference. Then we had to replace brakes about 3 times now, apparently due to the dust on our roads!! We have also replaced the wheel bearings 5 times. The right back tire has gone flat 3 times, twice while driving down the highway, (new tire each time). On the weekend a piston went on the back hatch. I was going into it to get my mothers wheel chair out but my husband spoke to me and I backed up, thank God, as it slammed down so fast, it could have broken my back or even killed me. Needless to say we are not at all happy and I think it is time to ditch this vehicle and find something else. AND it is rusting around the doors even though we paid to have that rust protection package put on the car.

Piston/oil issue and ac compressor and condenser
I had problem w oil light coming on. Found out certain vin #s had what they call soft pistons. It was random vin and years. I never got a notice but I was losing oil. They did an oil consumption test and it failed. Pistons were replaced, paid for by Subaru. If you have this isssue have dealer check vin # And get it checked Also just had to have condenser replaced it was leaking. Still had issue with intermittent cool and hot air. Now found out the compressor is bad. So pissed. What’s the deal - Subaru in general don’t have too many problems. Any one else having issues. I have 70,000 miles and am meticulous in caring for vehicles I have

Frequent expensive repairs
Our 2014 Forester is 9 yrs old with about 150,000 km, and we've spent $6,000 in the last year on maintenance (The quotes from a dealership would have been $11,000). We had to replace both front ball joints and rear suspension along with an assortment of other non-routine repairs. No car I've ever owned has needed any of these items replaced, let alone after 9 years of use. The car has had all scheduled A,B, and C maintenance as indicated and regular oil, fluid, and filter changes. We bought the Forester for Subaru's record of solid engineering and put up with its obsolete communications and amenities package. Very disappointed.

Expensive maintenance
Well after reading the reviews I find that all my issues with my Forester are pretty much inline with other owners. I bought it second hand and thought that all the problems i have encountered with it were do to poor maintenance by previous owner but now i see that it is inherent to this model. In 3 years i have spent about $5000 on repairs would have cost at least double at Subaru dealer rates. All thing said it is a good car especially for winters but figure $2000 in yearly repairs after 65000 miles not sure it's worth it to take it all the way to 200,000 miles.

Good in Snow, Terrible in Life
This is my second Subaru after a 2005 Impreza which lasted me nearly 300,000 miles. Simply put, the 2014 Forester is garbage. I've had my engine replaced twice before 40,000 miles, the wheel bearings were shot at 80,000, and the front suspension has to be replaced at 89,000. I'm driving 95% on paved roads in town, the other 5% is occasional fire road driving-not at high speeds. This is such a disappointing vehicle. Do not buy.

Oil Consumption Issue
Eats roughly 2-3 quarts between oil changes and it’s important to keep up with it. At 145k massive loss in compression leading to no start, this is usually caused by running the engine low in oil. Outside of that the vehicle is very loud, windshields always crack at the exact same place, extremely gutless (merging onto the hwy can be scary). Clutch went out at 85k. Pretty disappointed and wish I hadn’t trusted the name.
accountCircle Bryant R on January 16, 2022
Subaru forester lacks the get up and go.
I get a decent mpg for the vehicle, but it does not have the get up and go acceleration that I would like, nor does it have the towing capabilities. Another issue I have with it is you load it with a full car for a road trip and the acceleration really struggles. The final issue I have is the electronics. I am constantly losing connection with my phone via Bluetooth and it is a struggle to get them to pair while driving.
accountCircle Karlee M on January 16, 2022
Overall it is a nice vehicle but has not been the most reliable.
We’ve unfortunately had multiple problems with this vehicle. The ac has stopped working twice and that is extremely expensive to repair/replace. The Bluetooth has to be connected every time you enter the vehicle rather than it automatically connecting. I also do not like how you can only unlock all doors from the front drivers side door-I understand that is for safety reasons but there should be a way to change that.
accountCircle Kelly N on June 20, 2022
All of my door locks broke
All of the door locks on my 2014 Subaru Forester broke. Subaru fixed one of them and has refused to fix the others. I am very disappointed in this. I’ve never in my whole life of owning cars had my door locks break. They need to do a recall because I’ve read that lots of other people have had the same problem with all 4 of there door locks breaking too.
accountCircle Beth S on July 29, 2021
Overall, I wish I had purchased a different make.
I do not like the engine power. It does not accelerate quickly enough. The doors do not automatically lock which is a feature that I like. The defrost does not work well. It is difficult to reach a comfortable temperature. It is either to warm or too cold. It requires more maintenance than cars I've driven in the past.
accountCircle Sara B on October 22, 2021
Maybe buy a Honda because safety alone isn't enough of a feature.
The backup camera is the absolute worst. Its small, placed in an area of the dash that impedes viewing especially on very sunny days. The cost of maintaining is higher than I expected when researching to purchase. The leather on the seats is starting to fall apart already and the car has less than 80k miles.
accountCircle Robin B on December 26, 2021
Expensive maintenance.
It has been extremely expensive to maintain. I have spent over 3000 in the last few years whether it comes to brake issues, tire issues etc... Further, this year in particular the hazard light has been on for several months. I have taken into Subaru several times, with no diagnosis of the problem.
accountCircle Amanda E on September 11, 2021
Great, until it has problems.
Recently it has started to have problems with oil and getting loud. Come to find out, it is under a lawsuit for excess oil consumption and I may need repairs. I have to drive it to so many miles before they will know and in the meantime, I have a loud vehicle that does not perform like it used to.

2015 Subaru forester base model insight.
Front end is big to be expected with Subaru. I covered my fabric seats with leather seat covers from amazon that transform the whole inside. No arm rests on front seats. Gas and brake pedals are sensitive compared to previous vehicles.
accountCircle Lauren M on October 16, 2021
Leaves a lot to be desired.
Clearly is the baseline version of the model. It could be modernized a bit. The cloth seats leave a lot to be desired. The gas mileage is very low, but I have had very few engine issues. It is slow to accelerate.
accountCircle Carol S on June 25, 2021
Before you buy a Subaru, give it a really good test drive. If it has no get up and get, leave it on the lot. Several folks tell me they either have good Gas mileage and no get up and go, or Get up and go and no gas mileage. WHY can't they have both???
I Love My Forester, but it uses a lot of Oil and needs to have the engine replaced. Also it has no get up and go. And the leather on the seats are splitting up. I Love Subaru's but this one is a lemon

The interior automatic lighting system does not work properly. I like this car for its four wheel drive, but I neglected to get one with a good rack on it, I really wish I had a rack on top.

Forester comfort and technology.
There is not a lot of leg room between the first row and second row. The automatic trunk lift is really slow going up. You have to push the button multiple times to get the trunk to open.
