Automakers invest time and money into ensuring their products are reliable and safe for their customers. However, problems can still arise over time. In some cases, they are not apparent until after the vehicle has already been sold. If the issue poses a safety risk, a recall may get issued.

Have there been any recalls for the windshield trim of the 2015 Ford Explorer?

As of summer 2020, there has been no windshield trim recalls. However, there are other recalls to be aware of, these include:

  • Rear suspension toe link may be improperly welded
  • Rear suspension toe links may fracture
  • Parking brake may not fully engage
  • Hub unit bearing may allow wheel detachment

While these recalls do not relate to the complaint about the vehicle’s windshield, there have been other recalls issued. Here is a look at a few of them and how they may impact you as an owner.

Rear Suspension Toe Link May Be Improperly Welded

NHTSA Recall ID: 16V245000

Ford recalled this vehicle in 2016 for a potential problem related to the rear suspension toe link. This recall impacted only vehicles that were manufactured between January 17, 2014 and May 31, 2014.

The toe link may not be properly welded. If this is the case, the toe link may snap. This can create a risk for the driver, and he or she may lose steering control over the vehicle.

This creates a risk of a crash occurring. Ford issued the recall and alerted owners. It inspected vehicles for improper welding at dealerships. If there was evidence of damage, they replaced the rear suspension toe links at no cost to owners.

Rear Suspension Toe Links May Fracture

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V435000

Car Mechanic Repairing Suspension

Another recall related to the toe links was issued in June of 2019 for the 2015 Ford Explorer. This time, there was evidence that the fractured rear toe link can suddenly cause a loss of control over the vehicle’s handling. This puts the driver at risk of being in an accident.

This time, the problem was not related to an improper weld. Rather, it is due to a fracture developing due to stress on the rear suspension system. To fix this recall, Ford alerted owners and had dealers provide a full inspection of the area.

They replaced the rear suspension toe links on these vehicles to reduce these risks.

Parking Brake May Not Fully Engage

NHTSA Recall ID: 15V464000

The 2015 Ford Explorer was also recalled for a parking brake that does not properly or fully engage.

If the parking brake does not engage as it should, and the driver leaves the transmission in any gear other than Park. It can cause the car to be at risk of moving, especially when parked on a slope. This can lead to it rolling away and increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall was for Ford Explorers manufactured between May 4, 2015 and May 23, 2015. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, “Light vehicle brake system.”

To fix this problem, Ford notified owners and had dealerships test every vehicle’s parking brake system to determine if it was operating properly. If not, they replaced the parking brake control assembly at no cost to the owner.

Hub Unit Bearing May Allow Wheel Detachment

NHTSA Recall ID: 17E048000

Ford determined that some vehicles were at risk of the wheel hub bearing assembly failing. This is part number HB5Z-1104-C. The recall states that these parts were labeled improperly for installation on rear axles on the 2015 Ford Explorers.

These bearings were made improperly and lack the proper self-retention feature necessary to operate correctly.

As a result, there is a risk that the wheel or the wheel end will separate. If this happens, it increases the risk of the vehicle being in a crash. To fix this problem, Ford tracked down hubs that were supposed to be used and had dealers inspect existing vehicles to make adjustments.
