The 2015 Ford Explorer’s four trims lack nothing on the used lot. However, consumers seeking the best experience should either opt for the luxury of the Limited trim, or the brute horsepower and performance of the Sport.

Key Points

  • The 2015 Ford Explorer is offered in four trim levels, from the meat-and-potatoes Base and XLT trims, to the luxury offered by the Limited trim, and the big power of the Sport.
  • Three engines are available in the 2015 Explorer, including a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6, a fuel-efficient 2.0L EcoBoost inline-four, and a 365-horsepower 3.5L EcoBoost V6.
  • Enjoy practical features on Explorer Base, like standard traction and stability control, keyless entry, and 18-inch wheels. Upgrade to XLT for optional MyFord Touch with Bluetooth, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and more.
  • Though each model offers something for everyone, the Limited and Sport trims best represent the 2015 Explorer’s potential in the midsize crossover market.

2015 Ford Explorer Base Delivers Plenty of Practical Features Despite Being Entry-level Trim

The lowest trim level on the 2015 Ford Explorer is, fittingly enough, the Base. The trim level does offer quite a lot to consumers out of the gate, though. For one, a front-wheel-drive or optional four-wheel-drive setup is on the table, as are two engine choices: a 290-hp 3.5L V6, and a 240-hp 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder. Either engine is linked to a six-speed automatic, the only transmission available across the entire range.

From there, enjoy cloth seats, an AM/FM/CD system with MP3 capability and an aux jack, 18-inch aluminum wheels, rear HVAC with separate controls, and keyless remote entry add plenty of value to the Base level. Safety features like electronic stability and roll stability controls, rear child safety locks, dual-stage airbags up front, and more airbags throughout the cabin give occupants plenty of protection on the road. The admission price isn’t too bad, either: $15,951 to $18,370, per Kelley Blue Book’s Fair Market Range.

2015 Ford Explorer XLT Goes the Extra Mile with MyFord Touch, Offers a Number of Tech Add-ons

For a little more money, though, the 2015 Ford Explorer XLT trim adds a few more items consumers might desire in the midsize crossover. For starters, Bluetooth connectivity and parking sensors. Then, there’s the infotainment system. The XLT comes with Microsoft Auto 4.0-based Sync with MyFord Touch (a.k.a., Sync 2), housed within the eight-inch touchscreen built into the center console. The system is found in four optional tech packages for the XLT.

More tech features include a rearview camera, SiriusXM satellite radio, auto-dimming rearview mirror, premium nine-speaker sound, 911 assist, and inflatable rear seat belts. Blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert are optional safety features, while an appearance package places the Explorer name upon the hood, and 20-inch machined aluminum wheels on the corners. The KBB Fair Purchase Price for a 2015 Explorer XLT is $19,480.

2015 Explorer’s Limited Trim Brings Out the Luxury with Heated Leather Seats, 20-inch Alloy Wheels, and Optional Power Liftgate

From the XLT trim, two paths lay before those interested in a 2015 Ford Explorer. Those who seek luxury shall find it in the Limited trim level. Say goodbye to cloth seats. Instead, leather is the name of the game, with the front seats also receiving heat and tons of adjustability (10-way for the driver, six-way for the passenger), including four-way adjustable head restraints.

Meanwhile, the sound system gets a major upgrade in the Limited trim, in the form of a Sony 12-speaker system with HD Radio and SiriusXM satellite radio. A set of 20-inch painted aluminum wheels come standard. Option packages include items like a power liftgate, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power-folding third row, and rain-sensing wipers. Active park assist and lane-departure/lane-keep assist are among the shortlist of optional safety features on the Limited trim. Expect to pay around $19,550 to $22,509 on the used lot for example with 96,066 miles on the odometer, per KBB.

2015 Ford Explorer Sport - Photo by Ford

2015 Ford Explorer Sport Features 365-hp 3.5L EcoBoost V6, Aggressive Styling, and Sport-tuned Suspension

If more firepower is desired over luxury, though, the 2015 Ford Explorer Sport is the only trim to choose. The Sport is set apart from the rest of the line by offering a single powertrain combo: a 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6 sending all 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque to all corners. The Explorer Sport reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 5.9 seconds, blowing the doors off its competition on the merge lane, the Dodge Durango R/T with all-wheel drive.

Aside from running all of the day’s errands in a flash, the 2015 Ford Explorer Sport looks the part, too, with blacked-out body trim and grille, and a set of 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with painted pockets (in black, of course). Sport-tuned suspension and stainless steel exhaust with polished tips complete the sporty package. Those seeking to hustle the family from point to point on big road trips can expect to pay a KBB Fair Market Range of $20,494 to $23,597 for a good model on the lot.

Every 2015 Ford Explorer Trim has its Advantages, but the Limited and Sport Offer the Most for Consumers

While every trim level of the 2015 Ford Explorer offers something for everyone, the Limited and Sport trims are the best options to consider, as they offer the most bang for the buck. The only decision to make at that point is which trim is the right trim: the luxury of the Limited, or the speed of the Sport.

10/10 would recommend a 2015 ford explorer limited to someone.
Comfort is amazing, having heated and air conditioner seats is a new thing for me but very handy. The only issue I have ever had in the vehicle is the touch screen likes to freeze here and there. I do feel having four different four wheel drive options is a little excessive but it is kind of neat. The leather of the seats is definitely a lot more durable than my last vehicle. Having three dogs and constantly traveling with them I was worried about them tearing the leather of the seats again but no such issues have risen. The automatic lift gate is also nice although it is very precise if you have something sitting too close to the latch sometimes you have to push it close. And do not even get me started on the heated steering wheel. That thing has been a blessing with in the cold.

We our proud owners of ford explorers and have owned many other fords through the years, however 2015 ford explorer is the finest car we have owned.

2015 Ford explorer Base: a safe way to explore.
My ford explorer is more than just a set of wheels to get me where I am going. It gets me there safely and in comfort. It is loaded with great options like heated seats and cooled seats. There are separate air controls in the back seat for my passengers comfort too. When I am ready for adventure, it tows my small camper like a champ. It is also fun to put it in four wheel drive and take the roads less traveled. The third row allows me to take many friends/family along too.

I will always buy a ford explorer xlt!
I love my ford explorer! The leather seats are padded and comfortable with great warming features. The air circulation and heat are top notch with adjustable settings for every passenger. It is such a great family vehicle. It feels sporty while still giving us the functional space we need for a family of five. Being a larger vehicle, the drive is so smooth and I always feel safe. Features like the rear backing cam and security alarm are so helpful. We love this vehicle!

Fantastic vehicle all around! 2015 explorer sport
I'm incredibly satisfied with my Ford Explorer. It's a large vehicle, but can still get up to 30 miles to the gallon. I have never experienced problems with my car, and I drive it around the country frequently. The leather interior is comfortable and easy to clean, and the seats are heated in both the front and the back. I love the push to start ignition, the sensors that detect my key and unlock the vehicle, and the sound system is also great!

Nice spacious family vehicle the 2015 Explorer Base
The ford explorer base model is a nice family vehicle. I love the 3rd row. Even with it up there is plenty of room in the trunk for storage while traveling. The middle row is comfortable and have plenty of space for 3 people. I have had mine for almost 4 years and have never had a problem with anything. I would've loved it to have captain chairs to make it easier for people to get in the back.

Plenty of space and comfort for the whole family in the 2015 Explorer Base!
I love the how the explorer offers the comfort and space I need for my whole family, including our large dog. The 3rd row of seats is a major bonus! I like the touch screen on the dash which gives me a clear and detailed picture when using the GPS. The seats and all comfortable for long trips and the heating option for the front seats is fantastic during the winter.

In your 2015 Explorer Base you can find very comfortable seats & a pleasing interior.
I love my explorer. I haven't had any issues with it yet and I have had it for almost 2 years. I love the interior and it is very comfortable to sit in. The only thing I dislike would be that in my second row of the vehicle (out of 3 rows) there are no arm rests, and the 3rd row seats are very stiff and straight up, which is not very comfortable.

2015 ford explorer limited- the perfect family car!
I have a 2015 ford explorer limited. I really love the car, the only problems I have had is with the auto start feature not working and the brakes squeaking. It drives really smooth and accelerates fast. The interior is very comfortable with leather seats and a roomy interior. It has a great sound system and control console that is easy to use.

Spacious and reliable 2015 Explorer XLT, while still being durable.
I have really enjoyed the features and durability of the vehicle. The safety features are also a perk. The amount of space with the XLT version is also a bonus with the kids and animals. For long trips both my wife and I are comfortable and with the option of the third row seating makes for my space for the kids to relax on long road trips.

2015 Explorer Sport: SUV with a sporty drive. Reliable utility vehicle.
Has a sporty feel to the drive unlike other similar size SUV's. The interior has held up extremely well. Some small exterior panels have come loose, but overall no other issues. Mechanically, I have not had any issues with the engine or transmission and continues to perform well. The gas mileage is not great, probably averages 18-20 mpg.

Love everything about my 2015 Explorer Sport. Would definitely buy another generation.
No real issues. Love everything about the car. Ford sync is really nice. Have an older version of sync, so the voice commands could be better. Free map updates which is a huge plus. But haven't any major issues or problems. Ford service is great. Did have a recall but they were quick to mail me and let me know and got it fixed quickly.

Fast 2015 Ford Explorer Sport With twin turbos and a little aftermarket assist it's quick.
Exhaust issues inside the vehicle has been the biggest issue to date. Other issues have come about and been resolved. Reliability on the road has been great. Fuel mileage isn't the best but that's to be expected in the Sport version of the Explorer. We do love this vehicle and the way it handles and is comfortable on long trips.

What my 2015 explorer limited has to offer; can handle kids and snow no problem.
I needed a vehicle that would get me through the South Dakota winter snow. My explorer sure can get that done. Great vehicle. Very comfortable for road trips. Has 3rd row seating which is super helpful for the kids. All their bags and sports equipment fit in there no problem! I am not used to the gas mileage quite yet.

2015 ford explorer XLT pros & cons.
For the most part I love my car. It is spacious, comfortable, with little to no problems. However, my complaint would be that the interior is not as durable. The driver side armrest on the door split open shortly after I purchased it in 2016 along with the center console cracking and stressed seams in the seats.

The 2015 ford limited is a great vehicle for pleasure or business.
I really like the third row seating and my leather seats. It rides and drives good. Other than regular oil changes and rotating the tires I have not had to do anything to it as far as maintenance. I also get great gas mileage. One of the features I love about it is the array of changeable colors on the dash.

2015 Explorer Sport is a great buy from the best company.
Love the explorers! Just wish the newer models had the back glass open instead of having to open the entire hatch. Great gas mileage on the highway, decent in town. Seats 6 passengers. Hands-free and touch screen are very helpful. Seat warmer/air cooler plus heated steering wheel is a great comfort bonus.

2015 Explorer Sport. Great family car, if you are looking for something that is both functional!
Great car. Big enough to fit 3 children comfortably, as well as provide the luxury of a nice SUV. The two sunroofs are a nice perk. With the twin turbos the car accelerates quickly and provides you with a smooth ride all the time. 5 years owning it and haven't had any major problems with it.

2015 Ford explorer base, affordable family car with great features.
No problems so far. Very comfortable and roomy. Great trunk space and sleek outside look! I love the hand free driving sync option and console features. I have some difficulties parking it BC the front is wide but the back up camera helps. I would definitely purchase another.

What a great ride, fast and comfortable: 2015 Explorer Sport
My explorer sport has been a dependable and comfortable vehicle. I love driving it, with the power of the ecoboost engine and the way it handles. It makes a great long-distance driver, which I have comfortably driven over 600 miles in a single day without wearing myself out.

This 2015 Explorer Sport SUV has everything, I love it.
It is fully loaded so it has heated seats, two moon roofs, all wheel drive. Seats 7 with plenty of trunk storage. Plenty of hubs to plug in phones and other tech. Climate control in front and back. Sirius radio, CD player, am/FM. Handles very well and fun to drive.

Great vehicle to purchase: 2015 Explorer XLT
Smooth ride, large enough for 3 kids and 3rd row option. Great on gas mileage and love the 4 wheel drive. Very roomy and worth every penny. Has a 5 star safety rating with controls in the back for air. Has GPS navigation and a sun moonroof. Large trunk space.

2015 Ford explorer limited- plenty leg room.
Love the ford explorer. The third row is much more roomy than other brands with plenty of legroom. The trunk has generous storage with the third row seats up or stowed. The second row of seats also seems to have more legroom than I have seen in other SUVs.
