If you’re considering a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, there are 10 recalls you will want to be aware of when shopping.
Power Transfer Unit
Chrysler is recalling certain 2014-2017 Cherokees equipped with a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU). Movement in the PTU between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft can cause some of the input spline teeth to wear off. When that occurs, there can be loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. This prevents power from being transferred between the front wheels and the transmission, which can cause a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion. Likewise, it can cause a loss of the park function when the vehicle is stationary.
The recall began July 14, 2020, and Chrysler has notified impacted owners. Dealers will update software to maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling while the vehicle is in park. It will activate the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. Owners who have questions should call Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall W47.
Cruise Control
Chrysler is recalling certain 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokees to address a defect that could prevent the vehicle’s cruise control system from disengaging. If there is a short circuit within the vehicle’s wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control, either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning off the system. The vehicle instead could maintain its speed or accelerate, increasing the crash risk.
This recall began June 4, 2018, and Chrysler has notified owners, who have been advised to stop using the cruise control until the vehicle software is updated. Dealers will perform a software update on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. If owners have any questions, they can contact customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall U49.
Fire Extinguisher
Certain 2015 Chrysler Jeep Cherokees may be among several vehicles Chrysler has recalled due to an issue with Kidde plastic-handle or push button Pindicator fire extinguishers. The extinguishers can become clogged, which can prevent proper operation when needed. In some models, the nozzle can also become detached from the valve assembly with enough force to potentially cause injury.
This recall began Feb. 14, 2018, and Chrysler has notified affected owners. Owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference T82, or call Kidde customer service at 1-855-262-3540.
Loose Seat Fasteners
Certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles are part of a Chrysler recall involving seat fasteners that may not have been tightened to specification, resulting in increased potential for injury.
The recall began in September 2016 and Chrysler has notified affected owners. Dealers will replace the seats or seat sets for free. Owners may also contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall S63.
Transmission Shifting Unexpectedly
Certain 2015 Jeep Cherokees are being recalled by Chrysler because they can unexpectedly shift to neutral, increasing the risk of crash. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness and this can cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift to neutral.
This recall began on Nov. 7, 2016, and Chrysler has notified impacted owners. Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and transmission control module free of charge. If necessary, the transaxle range sensor wire harness will also be replaced. Owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403, referencing recall S55.
Liftgate Short Circuit
This recall was announced by Chrysler due to the potential for a short circuit in the liftgate module due to water leaking in. This can increase the risk of fire. The recall includes certain 2015 Jeep Cherokees manufactured between Feb. 18, 2015, and Sept 10, 2015, that are equipped with the power liftgate option.
This recall began on Feb. 1, 2016, and Chrysler has contacted owners. Dealers will inspect the module and connectors for corrosion and replace any damaged components. In addition, the mastic shield will be removed and the module covered with a water shield. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall R67.
Air Conditioning Hose
Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2015 Jeep Cherokee vehicles manufactured from Oct. 1, 2014 to June 18, 2015. The problem is a misrouted air conditioning suction/discharge hose.
Chrysler has notified owners. Dealers will inspect the routing of the air conditioning hose, replacing and correctly installing hose as necessary, free of charge. The recall got under way on Nov. 23, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall R57.
Radio Software Security
Chrysler has recalled 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokees because their radios have software vulnerabilities that can enable third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems. Exploitation of the software vulnerability can result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of crash.
This recall began on Aug.25, 2015. Chrysler has notified those owners affected and mailed a USB drive that includes a software update, eliminating the vulnerability. The USB is provided free of charge. Owners may also download the update themselves to their own USB drive from Driveuconnect or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. The wireless service provider has closed the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. However, the software update needs to be completed to eliminate all vulnerabilities. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference R40.
Water Entering Liftgate
Similar to the later recall, but involving different manufacturing dates, this recall involves risk of fire due to a short circuit in the liftgate control module when it gets wet. In this recall, Chrysler is targeting certain 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee vehicles manufactured between Jan. 4, 2013, and Feb. 18, 2015, equipped with a power liftgate option.
Chrysler has notified owners. Dealers will inspect the power liftgate control module and connectors for corrosion, substitute a bolt for the threaded grommet installed and cover the power liftgate control module in a foam water shield, at no cost to owners. This recall began on Oct. 26, 2015. Concerned owners may also contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference R27.
Side Curtain Airbag Deployment
In this recall by Chrysler, airbags can deploy unexpectedly while the vehicle is operating, increasing the risk of crash or injury. The recall began on March 4, 2015, and involves certain 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokees.
Chrysler has notified owners who are asked to contact their local dealers. Dealers will update related software at no cost to vehicle owners. Vehicle owners may also contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number R05.
