2015 Subaru Forester Problems Include Engine Issues and Faulty Brake Lights

Feb 15, 2022

2015 Subaru Forester is a popular and versatile CUV. However, it has some serious problems that potential buyers need to be aware of. The vehicle has only three recalls after seven years on the road, but they all address issues that could pose a safety risk, including stalling engines and malfunctioning airbags.

Key Points

  • The 2015 Subaru Forester has three recalls along with 465 complaints reported to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • The first recall addresses an engine stall that may cause a crash.
  • Another serious recall relates to brake lights that do not function properly.
  • Frequently reported problems include engine issues and inaccurate fuel gauges.
  • The 2015 Subaru Forester is a safe and reliable vehicle, but recall repairs are necessary.

2015 Subaru Forester’s Three Recalls All Affect Vehicle Safety and Cover Possible Engine Stalls, Bad Brake Lights, and Airbags that Don’t Deploy in a Crash

The NHTSA has issued three recalls for the 2015 Subaru Forester. The first recall was launched in 2016 and applies to Forester 2.0XT models. A faulty turbocharger air intake duct may easily crack and result in an engine stall. Dealers will inspect the system and replace it if necessary.

The 2015 Subaru Forester’s second recall was opened in early-2019 over a malfunctioning brake light switch that could prevent the brake lights from illuminating.

The issue with the brake light switch may also prevent keyless ignition vehicles from starting, and automatic transmissions from being able to be shifted out of Park.

The most recent recall is from fall 2019. It affects 2015-2018 Subaru Foresters equipped with heated seats. The recall is over a loose electronic connection in the front passenger seat may cause the occupant detection system to deactivate the airbag even though the seat is occupied.

Dealers will replace the occupant detection system for free if necessary.

Over 450 Registered Consumer Complaints Bring up Same Airbag Issues Mentioned in 2019 Recall, Plus Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Reportedly Stranded Drivers

The NHTSA has over 450 registered complaints about the 2015 Subaru Forester, and they cover a broad range of components, including the engine, electrical system, and vehicle speed control.

The most recent complaint of note came in early-2022. A 2015 Forester owner from Maine alleges the front engine cover seal failed on their vehicle. This caused an oil leak that reportedly led to $3,700 in damages to the engine. The car had 105,000 on the odometer at the time.

Nearly a quarter of the complaints to the NHTSA involve engine issues–particularly, engine failure or loss of power at highway speeds.

Some of the 2015 Subaru Forester owners took their car to a dealership immediately after engine failure occurred. But the service department was unable to diagnose the cause of the problem.

The NHTSA also received nearly 50 complaints about the vehicle’s inaccurate fuel gauge. An owner in Oregon reports their vehicle ran out of gas twice in four months despite a gas gauge reading of 70 miles.

2015 Subaru Forester is Safe and Reliable, but Recall Repairs are Necessary

Subaru sold 175,192 copies of the Forester in 2015. That made the Forester the 10th best-selling SUV for that year.

The 2015 Forester maintains its popularity on the used car market, and that translates into high resale value.

Kelley Blue Book estimates a fair purchase price of $15,443 for a used 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i in good condition with 92,000 miles. That represents an impressive 63% of the original MSRP, which was $23,195.

The 2015 Subaru Forester is recognized as a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. And there are over 650 reviews of the 2015 Forester on Vehicle History, with consumers giving it a rating of 4.6 out of five stars.

Two-thirds of the reviewers gave the 2015 Forester a perfect five-star rating, and another 28% gave it four stars. No one gave the 2015 Forester the lowest rating of one1 star.

All things considered, the 2015 Subaru Forester’s high resale value and excellent crash test results make it a wise choice as a used car. But it has some serious safety issues that are repairable through recall

This vehicle had problems with under 20k miles
I bought this vehicle hoping to Have reliable transportation for a long time. The first 15 months my AC went out. The dealer fixed it. Well sort of. 6 months later I moved and it went out again. That dealer said it should have been completely replaced the first time. So they did it and it worked better than the day I drove it off the lot. At under 50k they had to replace the bottom half of the engine. It was actually a recall on the Outback and a couple of others. But not the Forester. Fortunate it was still under warranty (8k job). In the last 12 months it was wheel bearings both sides rear. The little “Y” splitter for the window washer sprayer went (Dealer = 200$). A friend spent a buck at the auto store and installed it in 15 mins. This problem from what I read has been an issue for decades. So today my vehicle is at the shop getting CV joints replaced. After it is safe to drive hopefully by Thursday because I have an appt with the dealer for a solenoid and valve body replacement with a flush = 2000k 😊 Yes the vehicle that keeps on giving! Or should I say I keep on giving. I have a 104k miles on it now. It would be nice to think I could drive it for another 7 yrs after all the costly repairs but I’m pretty confident that will not be the case. It makes me I’ll to see it in the driveway. I will get rid of it as soon as I financially can. The two star review is generous considering how I feel about the vehicle. I will never purchase another Subaru. Oh and yea, it was on the cover of consumer report (when I purchased 12/2014) taunted as safest most reliable. To bad you cant sue for false info. 🤣😂

Too many repairs over first 5 years/55k miles
Started to notice rust on the underbody after about a year. After 40k miles we have taken to the dealer 4 times for issues. One was a faulty alternator, two for standard recalls, and the third because the rear strut literally fractured into pieces and left the car incapacitated while parked in the garage. Had to have it towed for the last one but it was covered under a newly released recall. In addition, new tires were down to 5/32 after 9K miles. Car is now 5 years old with 55K miles. Had to replace the battery, fan controls are malfunctioning, needed another set of new brakes, and had to replace the rear passenger side wheel bearing. Done with the vehicle and took the loss on trading it in which will likely save me a few thousand in the long run. Terribly dissatisfied with the quality of parts and reliability. I just didn’t have the confidence that my wife and kids wouldn’t be stranded on a road trip.

2015 Subaru Forester - Nothing but problems
My wife and I purchased a used, 2015 Subaru Forester, under 30,000 miles in 2017 (Clean title, Car Fax, etc.). Since then, we've had to replace the front right axle twice, the front left axle once, among many other issues. This car has had nothing but issues. The horn stopped working and Subaru wants $500 to replace it. The A/C has now stopped working (as summer approaches here in Texas). The other issues are too numerous to count. I was always a believer in the reliability and longevity of Subarus. I would avoid purchasing any Forester from the 2012-2016 year range, and perhaps, avoid purchasing a Subaru altogether. After reading forums, it is clear that these cars have serious issues (from the moment they rolled off the line) and Subaru has done little to remedy the problems.

The car does have its issues but it is a very nice ride and there are no blind spots when driving. The sun roof is spacious.
I bought a new 2015 Subaru Forrester. Since then, I have had to replace the battery, the brakes, all four bearings, the water that is used to clean the front car window is broken, the air conditioning just broke--The air conditioning comes out hot---and all four tires have been replaced. I do love this car in many ways. I still may buy another one at some point, but when I go to buy a new car, I will be reminded of the many problems that I have had and even more importantly, I will be reminded that I have had disappointments with the dealership.

Multiple failures
I always wanted a Subaru. Finally purchased a new Forrester in 2015. I would need to dig out my repair records for a complete list, but here are some highlights. Air conditioner compressor failed at 68,000 miles. Front CV joints replaced st 70,000 miles. New engine 72,000 miles ( quart of oil every 1000 miles), new front end including “electric rack and pinion” (?) at 102,000 miles (that cost $5,700.00). My first new car ( I am 67) and my last Subaru. I never has there issues with my Hondas…

2015 Subaru Forester
His car is plagued with issues; I’ve had all four wheel bearings done. Constantly runs out of oil before next oil change due. Now there is a gas leak. AC quit working 2 years ago had the compressor? Replaced. Not working again. They replaced the Freon and it all leaked out. Can’t find leak. So no AC again. Battery needs replaced. Heat shield needs replaced. I could go on but why Bother. Just ridiculous. Back to Toyota next vehicle 🤞(Ontario, Canada)

I bought a used 2015 Forester 2.5i from a Scarborough Subaru Dealer (Canada). It turned out to be many challenges. I spent about $ 2200, but could not eliminate the vibration. Dealership categorically refuses to acknowledge and correct the problem. Six independent licensed mechanics and two racers (Impreza) have confirmed significant vibration on the Highways. Who else can tell me what to do, and who can I ask for help. Thanks.

Audio issue
Am I the only one who is having problem with the audio? It keeps on unpairing my phone, therefore I cannot take or answer calls, and listen to my music. I brought it to the dealership several times; I was told my car's audio is an old model, cannot cope up with the new phone's upgrade, therefore cannot sync. The dealer said they cannot do anything about it, cannot change or upgrade the audio or sound system.

Manual Subaru forester plagued with problems.
I really wanted to like my Subaru but it has been plagued with problems. The Bluetooth in radio failed in 1st year. Car was eating through oil, they said it was fine, but ultimately failed 2nd oil consumption test, had to have part of engine replaced. Air conditioner started leaking, needed new compressor. Wheel bearings had to be replaced. Clutch had to be replaced. All in less than 4 years.

AC, BLUETOOTH, JERKY TRANSMISSION
Bought used with a clean car fax. A/C went out within a month. Dealer said it was nearly out of Freon. We had it filled and within a month it was blowing hot air again. Freon half empty but no sign of a leak. New compressor installed. The bluetooth disconnects constantly. I plug into the aux port to get my phone to reconnect. From 20-40 mph the transmission is jerky.

Eyesight feature and lane departure.
It does not have enough cup holders and you cannot hook them on the door anymore. Also, the eyesight safety feature is mounted such that the sun glares through and you cannot block it because the eyesight device blocks the extender for the visor. It also sits too high and is no longer convenient for me to load items in the back easily.

Subaru interior design needs improvement.
I do not like the armrest it is too low and too small to utilize. The Bluetooth does not really work it disconnects regularly from phone, temperature dials are not as clear simple and user friendly as they should be for a modern vehicle. Dashboard gets extremely dusty very abnormally fast.
accountCircle hazel L on July 19, 2021
Simple, basic car.
It is your basic suv without any bells or whistles. I did have to replace my battery less than 3 years after buying my car but dealer said it was manufacturer problem and was stilled covered by warranty. I started hearing weird ticking sounds in the front about 2 years into owning it.

2015 Subaru forester review.
The body of the car is not as strong as I thought, and the scratches appear severe even in small scratches. And after using it for about 5 years, I think the rattling noise from the engine has increased. The fuel economy of this car is not very good in the city.

NON START condition with Keyless ignt7ion
Car has 85000 miles with normal brake and tire replacements. Happy that way. Now the keyless entry will crank the car but take 10-plus seconds to actually start NOT A BIG ISSUE RIGHT NOW BUT IT IS GOING TO LEAVE US STRANDED SOON. ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION?
accountCircle Bill on June 23, 2022
A/C
The 2015 Forester has 59k miles on it and the A/C compressor isn't working. Now they want $1800 replace. This is the 2nd time been in for A/C. So much for Subaru reliability will be trading and going back to Toyota or Honda.
accountCircle Nicholas Levis on November 28, 2023
Nothing but problems dealers won't touch
68 k motor blown after trans blew at 24k... CAD says "might help" but dealer wants 15k to rebuild. 2k for teardown just to diagnose. "I've seen rebuilds on 2018 xt that cost 22,000." Completely dissapointed with Subaru.
accountCircle Joan A on October 3, 2021
Subaru needs an overhaul - fine details require attention.
The interior material is hard to remove stains from.. The gaskets around door often come off. The paint scratches very easily. The Bluetooth rarely works. Setting the clock was very difficult to do.
accountCircle Emily C on December 8, 2021
Frustrating interface.
The interface is really clunky and difficult to use. It is hard to change date, time etc. Switching between screens is counter intuitive and it is hard to connect other devices to the Bluetooth.
accountCircle Shirley G on December 19, 2021
The car jerks when it goes from one gear to the other.
I dislike the way the transmission jerks particularly when i first start the car from a standing still position. The Bluetooth is not dependable. Sometimes it just drops calls.

Review of 2015 subaru forester.
Vehicle could be more spacious at back to provide space for children and their car seats. Needs modern luxury of voice assistance, entertainment system with video. Basic suv.

Beware of these faulty parts.
Windshield wipers get e. Worn out fast. It's not too good on gas and if you are going at a high rate of speed with all the windows down the vehicle sways side to side.

Loss of money
I bought my 2015 forester in Sept 2017. I'm not hard on vehicles and I've put almost 20k into work on this thing. Currently having to get my transmission repaired!
