The 2015 Toyota RAV4 is an SUV with a well-deserved reputation for quality. However, this model year has a few problems, mostly with the transmission. Owner complaints cover torque converter issues, abnormal shifting, and shuddering.

Key Points

  • The 2015 Toyota RAV4 was the third model year from this SUV’s fourth generation and was available in North America with a six-speed automatic transmission and three drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport).
  • While the 2015 RAV4 is not without issue, the transmission’s biggest problem is typically poor maintenance. You can find a few complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the transmission but without recalls.
  • Several drivers have reported their transmission shifting back and forth between gears (transmission hunting) at different speeds and complaints about gear slipping and shuddering since the car was brand-new.
  • The most common transmission problems include low fluid levels or leaks due to worn seals, damaged solenoids because of insufficient fluid levels, and jammed clutches.
  • Overall, transmission problems are relatively sparse for the 2015 RAV4, but we found few issues among Toyota owner forums and complaints at the NHTSA.

Owners Report Erratic Shifting at Different Speeds, and the Likely Culprits May Be a Faulty Clutch and Torque Converter

Several 2015 Toyota RAV4 owners have reported abnormal shifts at different speeds in both the FWD and AWD models. In a forum thread on Toyota Nation, owners discuss how their RAV4s shift up and down erratically, sometimes before reaching 40 mph.

Apparently, this is a persistent problem in the fourth-generation RAV4 based on reports dating back to the 2013 model year of the RAV4. However, many Toyota dealers seem unable to diagnose the issue, despite many owners claiming these problems are caused by the torque converter and the clutch.

The clutch in the RAV4 is within the torque converter and can occasionally become jammed. When the clutch jams, the solenoid may lock, and the amount of transmission fluid in the torque converter may not be sufficient. These clutch issues in the torque converter also appear very similar to low fluid levels.

Clutch problems can also cause violent shaking and may produce very high heat levels in the transmission. You will typically also notice a very sharp drop in the engine’s power output.

A technical service bulletin from Toyota regarding torque converter flex lock-up shudder mentions that 2015 RAV4s may exhibit a brief shudder intermittently while driving between 25 and 50 mph.

2015 Toyota RAV4 May Suffer From Delayed Gear Shifting, Slipping Gears, and High RPMs Caused by Low Fluid Levels

A handful of drivers have registered complaints at the NHTSA about their RAV4 slipping gears and unusually high rpms.

For example, the rpms would inadvertently increase up to 4,000 – 5,000 rpms at speeds as low as 35 mph. But then, when accelerating onto highway speeds in sport mode, the rpms go up as they should, but the transmission cannot downshift correctly and gets stuck at 3,000-4,000 rpms.

Low fluid levels or leaks typically caused some of these problems resulting from poor owner maintenance. Unfortunately, it is not rare that owners fail to follow preventive maintenance procedures for their transmissions. In this thread from RAV4 Worldowners discuss transmission fluid change intervals.

Low Fluid Levels or Fluid Leaks are Among the Most Common Types of Transmission Problems in the 2015 RAV4

Leaks in the transmission system itself usually cause low transmission fluid levels. For example, the rubber seals in the transmission or driveshaft may become damaged and leak fluid. Therefore, transmission gasket seals should be replaced periodically.

In addition, on some occasions, the coolant in the radiator may contaminate transmission fluid. This is called cross-contamination and occurs occasionally.

Proper maintenance will help the transmission perform better, last longer, and require fewer repairs. This way you can avoid a transmission repair for your RAV4 that according to the Kelley Blue Book, could cost between $4,614 and $6,242.

Most of the Time, the Biggest Transmission Problem of a 2015 RAV4 is Poor Maintenance

Serious transmission issues are infrequent for owners of the 2015 Toyota RAV4. Sometimes, these issues result from neglecting transmission service schedules.

The Toyota RAV4 relies on a six-speed automatic transmission that is trouble-free mainly. So, if you’re in the market for an SUV with a solid powertrain, the RAV4 is a safe bet. But keep in mind to check the service schedule before buying a used RAV4 and stay on top of transmission maintenance.

Suppose you can find a 2015 RAV4 where the previous owner did a proper job maintaining the vehicle. In that case, you can expect this SUV to last between 200,000 miles and 250,000 miles with the original transmission.

Too many problems with not being able to use the technology.
I have a black 2015 Toyota rav4. I have a lot of problems with the car, including technology, having several recalls to the car. It is really hard to change the station on the radio because they have the commands so close together and it is on the screen so I am constantly pushing the wrong button. I have put my car in for service only to leave and have to go right back in because the car sounded like it was going to fall apart. I once left the Toyota repair shop and could not get out of the parking lot without the tires sounding like they were coming off.

Meh....wouldn't recommend
The day we bought this car, RAV4's were flying out of the dealership. While I really wanted a white one, there were none available (first world problem, I know). Anyhow, here we are five years later and I don't love this car. The sun reflects off the chrome around the screen, blinding me. I have to hold my right hand over it in order to see. The driver's seat is cracking very badly. No auto lift for back. Though I have the "Travel Package" the seats are very uncomfortable. Road noise is terrible.

2015 rav4 an overall good value.
Overall I would say I am satisfied with my 2015 rav4. I have owned it for almost five years now and never had any major issues. Recently however I have been having issues with the drivers lock not working the only way to lock or unlock is manually. This is the only I have encountered in the four years I have owned the vehicle. My only other gripe is the lack of a light in rear / trunk area.

Toyota Rav4 2015 - does it live up to the Toyota rep.
Car was purchased new and now has 30,000 miles. Cons: Already had to get new front brakes, interior door arm rests have pulled away from structure, seats are uncomfortable, missing outer plastic piece from top part of roof area. Pros: decent gas mileage, backup camera, spacious in front, backseat, and rear cargo area . Car kept in garage and we'll maintained.

Rear hatch .. Should be recalled
Recently my left hatch strut seized and broke. I also purchased the extended warranty. Much to my disbelief the parts and labor to replace both struts was $1386.00. My advisor Dave explained to me that water gets in and rusts sets in causing the strut (left) to seize and break. The right one had extensive rust and was suggested to replace as well.

Five years with my Toyota rav4.
I would say the only real performance problem is that it is not the strongest engine you'll ever find. Otherwise, the car has been reliable, gets good gas mileage and has been safe to drive. I have noticed that the battery has died several times but given that I live in Arizona, I suspect that has more to do with it.

The rav4 is compact but spacious.
I have had several issues with tires. I feel like I have had to get new ones too often for the age of the vehicle. Not sure if this is in relation to the make and model of the vehicle or not. The back seat has no vents in the back. Thankfully I rarely have back seat passengers or they would be miserable.

Too many tire seal & sensor problems
So many tire problems it's just not worth it! Bought brand new in 2015, starting having problems with the tire seals and sensors in 2018. Dealership covers the cost of repairs but the amount of hours I have wasted waiting for the seal and sensor replacements causes me great regret in buying this vehicle.

Overall satisfied with the vehicle just unhappy with the blind spots.
Too many blind spots. The rear doors do not always close tightly. Gas mileage is good and it is comfortable excellent leg room in the back seat and terrific trunk space. It is a very quiet and smooth car ride. Audio feature is good and easy to navigate. Enjoy the hands free phone option in the vehicle.

It is very hard to clean the inside.
The price is too high for the way it's made. I would have expected navigation and ac vents in the back. Not really good on gas. I drove down to North Carolina from Virginia and had to fill up once I got to Raleigh which is only 2 hours from my home but the car supposed to have eco mode.

Huge Blind Spots
The side mirrors on this car create huge blind spots. I like that it is good on gas and the options that it has such as navigation and moonroof. I dislike that there are handling issues that I have not been able to have resolved and lack of headroom for entering and exiting the car.

Shortcomings of Toyota Rav4's
Vehicles like the RAV4 are supposed to have tons of space for hauling cargo and get fairly good gas mileage. The reality is that this vehicle has far less cargo space than my old Chevy Malibu, It also gets far worse bang for the buck with gas. It doesn't live up to the promise.

Very slow car and they need to redesign this car.
Very slow car, I wish I who choose another car because it breaks down everywhere even in the city area. Do not buy it because it is trash. I rather to have a jeep or something like that. Please take my advice. Especially if you have money. The seats are not comfortable.

Toyota rav4 review, gets you places, but can be improved.
Bluetooth can be funky. Seatbelts in the back are not as strong as those in the front. The car can be a little shaky sometimes. When strong wind blows, it shakes. When you are on the highway, it shakes. When it is too bright outside, it is difficult to see the screen.

RUSTING OUTSIDE
I found that the newer model white color is RUSTING behind ALL outside OPEN door handles. The vehicle is always parked in my garage. Due to the RUSTING I have to get a NEW PAINT job on my vehicle. Be CAREFUL about the newer RAV4 white vehicle !!!!!

Blind spots are a deal breaker
There are many things to like about this car, but I got t-boned on a busy highway because of blind spots. I can't relax when I drive because I have to be overly cautious, due to blind spots in 4 places.

Very easy drive, smooth and quiet. Not going to be a luxury vehicle but has basics.
Smooth ride, however missing some somewhat basic helpful things - such as beeping when backing up (when close to object).
