The 2016 Jeep Compass is a popular compact crossover SUV that has a fair share of reliability concerns. Common problems include engines stalling, transmissions overheating, and malfunctioning electrical components.

Key Points

  • The 2016 Jeep Compass has a sole recall and 187 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a relatively low number considering this car sold nearly 90,000 units in 2016.
  • The NHTSA currently has two open airbag-related investigations due to overstress of an airbag electrical component and the rupture of airbag inflators.
  • Various electrical issues have been reported, with the engine stalling while driving being the most concerning.
  • Several transmission problems, such as overheating and leading to engine stall, have prompted many owner complaints.
  • Despite not having an alarming number of recalls and complaints, the 2016 Jeep Compass is a poor choice if you’re looking for a used compact SUV.

Multiple Engine Stall Problems Triggered the 2016 Compass’ Single Recall

Considering that the 2016 Jeep Compass has been on the road for about seven years, the vehicle’s sole recall, two investigations, and less than 200 owner complaints registered with the NHTSA are not alarming. But its small number of problems prompted safety concerns.

For instance, the 2016 model’s crankshaft or camshaft sensor on some vehicles could function intermittently, resulting in the engine stalling.

And although this faulty component is not exclusive to the 2016 Compass, as some owners of newer models have complained about this, 2016 has been the only model year that prompted a recall.

In December 2016, Chrysler recalled 42,231 vehicles of different models from its 2016 lineup, due to a defective crankshaft positioning sensor.

If the crankshaft sensor fails, it could cause difficulty starting the vehicle or create dangerous situations like engine stalling, which increases the risk of a crash.

Since Chrysler promptly addressed this problem, there have been no further related recalls on later Compass models.

Nearly 200 Owners of 2016 Compasses Have Complained About Failing Transmission and Engine Power Loss

Almost half of the 2016 Jeep Compass’ 187 complaints reported to the NHTSA cover engine problems. Owners have reported loss of power, the car shutting off while driving, and being unable to restart again because of a faulty crankshaft positioning sensor or the transmission failing.

Sometimes, when the engine has failed, drivers claim they did not see any warning messages or lights on the car. However, other owners reported that the “check engine light’ alert came on after the vehicle died.

The transmission is another powertrain component 2016 Compass owners have complained about. The most common symptoms of the transmission failing include the transmission overheating, rough shifting, or the vehicle jerking and stalling.

Two Open Investigations Cover Defective Airbag Components in the 2016 Compass

In 2019, the NHTSA opened an investigation that is currently ongoing, focusing on the car’s airbag control unit (ACU) due to a defective electronic component.

The ACU senses a vehicle crash to determine whether airbag deployment is required and, if so, deploys the appropriate airbags and other supplemental restraints.

A failure of this component may affect the proper operation of the ACU and consequently prevent deployment of the airbags and devices.

A second open investigation covering defective airbags started in December 2021 due to a rupture of a desiccated airbag inflator.

According to the NHTSA, after prolonged exposure to high-temperature cycles and humidity, airbag inflators using a specific propellant can degrade and cause the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.

This rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, causing severe or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants.

Transmission Problems Such as Shuddering are a Common Issue Reported to Compass Owner Forums

On the My Jeep Compass forum, owners report experiencing surging because of the CVT transmission, sometimes caused by a clogged cooler return filter. Others describe problems with the CVT transmission range sensor causing shifting problems.

Another owner discusses on Jeep Garage how his Compass shudders when accelerating, and it happens at all speeds.

Several drivers turned to City-Data to rant about their experience in the 2016 Compass. Some claim the car struggles to accelerate and complain about the CVT and the questionable quality of interior materials.

Likewise, a handful of 2016 Compass owners have headed over to Car Complaints to share the transmission problems they’ve experienced.

Owners report the transmission making loud whining and grinding noises while driving and slipping gears. Other reports cover slow acceleration and stutters, and transmission failure.

Although Not Necessarily Problematic, You’ll Be Better off Avoiding the 2016 Jeep Compass

Even though the number of issues is not as extensive on the 2016 Compass, the safety risks along with poor resale value will have you looking at the Compass’ competitors.

The Compass’ weak engine, firm ride, and cheap cabin materials make it a less desirable vehicle compared to other SUVs in its segment.

So, if you’re in the market for a Compass, consider more reliable options, such as the 2016 Honda CR-V and 2016 Hyundai Tucson.

The front passenger side brakes squeal and service can never hear it nor locate any problem with the brake.
The Compass Sport is extremely small inside. Tall people will have difficulty sitting comfortably (better on passenger side). 2 overweight, average height can ride upfront, however it can be crowded feeling. It is a 2L engine so if you want to get up and go (i.e. While entering onto an interstate), you need to leave plenty of room between you and upcoming traffic. Since purchasing the vehicle in 2016 the passenger seat belt sensor goes off often when seat belt is properly in use. Dealership has never found the problem therefore no repairs attempted. Same with front passenger brake squealing, especially in wet conditions. Finally the rear seat should easily host a rear facing car seat. However this is not the case. If you have a growing family, checkout a larger Jeep.

Just ok
It's ok for driving to work, not much room for stuff when there are passengers in the back. My 2016 compass which I bought with 53 miles on it, needs a battery , which upon inspection the factory installed battery is a 2013 battery. Ridiculous that the manufacturer put such an old battery in , also the factory tires were awful and were replaced after 1 yr (prior to its 2nd winter). I would not purchase a second compass. It also has some odd shifting issues upon acceleration, but not all the time.

Throttlebody
I brought my 2016 compass used in November of 2017 with almost 19000 miles on it. It is now the beginning of April 2019 and I have put less than 7000 miles on it. The check engine light started coming on about a week ago along with a lightning bolt and I think it was the ESB light intermittently. Dropped it off yesterday at the dealer and they are telling me the warranty expired February 17 and it cost 598+tax to fix a faulty throttle body. Waiting to hear back if Chrysler is willing to help!

The cons of my jeep compass latitude trim.
Feel like the transmission slips gears. Definitely have to baby it to get to higher speed or the rpms will not drop down to proper gears. The back door handles I have to sometimes pull up to three times to get door to open and feel it is a safety risk if I needed to get my kids out in an emergency.

It has easter eggs hidden throughout the car inside and out.
It is a great car but awful on gas and does not have much room if you have children. I give this car a 6/10. The blind spots on the sides of the car make you not be able to see if cars or people are coming. It is definitely not worth the price we paid. I would recommend having a jeep Cherokee.

Jeep compass the small things it lacks.
I do not like that the dash does not show more information like tire pressure, oil percentage, amount of gas until empty, etc. Additionally, Bluetooth is a hassle to connect and use. There’s no backup camera which is unfortunate considering it is a staple for modern cars now.

Ok. But don't overpay not worth it
The car has no pick up at all takes forever to reach desired speed and the car is loud, the tires make a lot of noise and it's not a comfortable ride. The car has DVD player which is nice but it doesn't work when that car is moving, the car has to be stopped and in park.

Fuel performance is very low, and the gadgets inside are simple.
Its not an efficient car. It looks big, but it's not very spacious. I feel that it could be a much better car, if the efficiency of the motor improves, maybe make it smaller, and add turbo to not lose power. I really like Jeep, but I feel this car hasn't done it for me.

Be willing to pay top dollar or it will not live up to your expectations.
My compass has no power. A lot of rev in the engine but it does not go anywhere. It does have a hub noise which is not from wear and tear I drive the car to and from work that is all not sure how that happened. The radio is spotty definitely will not be buying.

To many mechanical problems
Definitely not a smooth riding car. I've had more mechanical problems with this car than any car I've ever owned. Put a lot of money into fixing the car than actually enjoying it. I will never purchase a Jeep Compass again. I guess you pay for what you get

Not great, can't wait to trade in.
Handles a little rough. The packages are scarce for the price; had to go mid level just for basics like satellite radio and power windows. Radio display was subprime, paid for after market upgrade. No daytime running lamps. No back up camera unless luxury.

Buy compass with caution.
Lot of front end suspension problems. Also bad sensor replaced which had recall. Told by mechanic that replacing suspension is common for this vehicle. Bad gas mileage. This vehicle should be 6 cylinder engine. Rear spoilers very loose when it was bought.

Engine mounts worn in 3 years
This is a smooth ride until I stop at a stoplight. $500 to replace the engine mounts. Yes if those break your engine falls down. It shakes my car Intensely while it idles in drive. Beware of this i and report it to Jeep like I did when I had it diagnosed.

Piece of junk, would never buy one again.
Unreliable, always in for repairs. There is nothing I like any longer about this vehicle. I thought that it was great at first, but have changed my mind after needing so many repairs

Transmision
Not shifting properly,, lots of problems with ABS, brakes frizzing, the battery won't last long enough the last one only two months, and wheels don't hold tires air.
accountCircle Tanya B on June 15, 2021
It is useless for families
The cargo area is extremely small, rendering it useless for family use. The manufacturer needs to make the car larger in order to get more cargo space.
accountCircle Tina M on March 30, 2022
It is so small. The car does not ride well. Very loud and annoying.
It is like driving a tin can. It is so very loud. The radio is junk and it drives horribly. The brakes squeal all the time as well.
accountCircle Stacey C on February 26, 2022
That it needs a tune more than other cars that it is slower in acceleration.
Not real comfortable when driving for long periods of time engine is to small not enough power for acceleration.
accountCircle Herendira R on December 7, 2021
This car Is not good with gas. Do not buy if you are trying to save on gas!
Problem is it is not a gas saver. Not enough space for back middle passenger. Does not have a place for feet.

I'm pissed about the air bag light coming on and off non stop, 600 for a new clockspring
Chrysler is trash, unless they recall all 2016 Jeep Compass's for their airbag problem.

It has satellite radio. It is white. It is a 2.4l. It has a 4 cylinder engine.
I dislike there are too many issues. It had a defect.
