Severe Electrical Problems Leading to Engine Stalls and Rollaways Made Chrysler Recall the 2017 Pacifica Four Times

Chrysler recalled the 2017 Pacifica four times over problems with the electrical system. The first recall pertains to models equipped with the 3.6L motor that could stall due to faulty engine control software.

The second recall concerning the electrical system is over the cruise control failing to deactivate, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy for both problems come courtesy of software updates.

Also, some 2017-2018 Pacificas were recalled for a rollaway problem. The most recent recall, however, covers models equipped with the engine stop/start system. A loose ground connection could intermittently cause a loss of power steering assist and engine stalls.

Ineffective Anti-lock Brake System and Flawed Seat Belt Buckles Led to Additional Recalls for the 2017 Pacifica

In 2017, Chrysler had to recall almost 50,000 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica models equipped with the eight-passenger seating option due to seat buckles unlatching unintentionally.

Chrysler also acknowledged that the center overhead seat belt stow clip could crack, not allowing third-row or second-row passengers to use the seatbelts.

There are two other recalls that pertain to crossed rear brake lines causing the rear anti-lock brake system to be ineffective, and a crack in rear pinion brackets that could lead to wheel wobbles.

However, the number of affected vehicles for these two issues combined is less than 900.

Many 2017 Pacifica Owners Complain About Rough Shifts and Transmission Hesitations That Can Cost Over $1,000 to Repair

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica has more than 800 owner complaints registered with the NHTSA, and more than half are related to the powertrain.

Among these reports, transmission problems are the most common issue. Owners have dealt with rough, late shifts accompanied by loud bangs.

Several owners on the Pacifica Forum website echo these transmission issues, mentioning experiences with shuddering and a rapid loss of speed. “It feels as though the car can’t find the next gear,” says one owner. “The car revs but hesitates until it finally jolts forward so violent that it feels you were rear-ended by other car.”

According to Car Complaints, owners have spent $1,390 on average to fix the 2017 Pacifica’s transmission problems. However, some haven’t been able to find a permanent solution even after taking the minivan to dealerships several times.

One Car Complaints website user claims that even after replacing the entire transmission, “six months later when my vehicle reached 71,000 miles, the same problem appeared.”

Brake Pedal Going Soft and Being Slow to Respond Caused Hazardous Situations for Several Owners

Another common problem with the 2017 Pacifica pertains to the brakes, including reports of a hissing noise when braking, as well as the brakes failing to properly stop the vehicle.

Some owners have said that the brakes failed to stop the vehicle on different occasions. Others said the minivan rolled forward after depressing the brake pedal firmly.

At least eight owners reported to the NHTSA that they were involved in crashes because of this issue.

According to Car Complaints, replacing the brake booster fixes the problem most of the time. Some 2017 Pacifica owners have spent $800 on average to repair the brakes.

Expensive Transmission Overhauls, Along With Numerous Other Problems, Make the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Inferior to Other Popular Minivans

The 2017 model marked the beginning of the Chrysler Pacifica’s sixth generation and was one of the most problematic years for the minivan. For a seven-seater family hauler, the Pacifica offers a long list of impressive interior features and two potent powertrains with up to 287 horsepower.

But widespread engine and transmission issues overshadow the excellent qualities of the 2017 Pacifica.

Depending on the trim, a used 2017 Pacifica goes for $22,829 to $38,884, according to Kelley Blue Book. Within the same price range, the 2017 Honda Odyssey offers better tech and fewer problems. But the Chrysler Pacifica does stand out in fuel economy, offering up to 32 mpg on the highway.

Are 2017 Chrysler Pacificas Reliable?

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica was initially given an “average” predicted reliability rating of 3.5/5 by J.D. Power, but reviewers rate the 2017 Pacifica’s dependability lowly, and 853 NHTSA complaints and eight recalls exist for this year. Owners complain of shaking, engine stall, rough shifting, and transmission failure as early as 20,000 miles.

What are the Common Problems of the Chrysler Pacifica?

Early Pacificas, from 2004-2008, suffer from engine ticking and carbon buildup on valves after 100,000 miles, as well as failing power seats. 2017-2018 years have been recalled for faulty cruise controls, while hard shifting, early transmission failure, and peeling paint plague the 2017 model specifically.

The 2017 Pacifica van has been a money trap
I have had nothing but issues with my Pacifica and today the power steering just stopped in the middle of me making a left hand turn with my child in the car. I almost got into an accident. I can't afford to keep fixing it. I have had to have tune up after tune up. The emergency parking will just randomly decide to turn on almost causing an accident. The spare battery drains the other battery non stop. It is the worst vehicle I've ever owned and because it has constant issues when I went to get the recalls taken care of the dealership wouldn't fix the recalls because it wouldn't start because the tune up and they wanted almost $2,000. I absolutely hate this van and still have a years worth of payments.

Transmission, brakes, and AC oh my!
I’ve spent the most money on brakes. Bad calipers and seemingly bad hoses on back order for the brakes. The transmission shifting is really unacceptable. I recently rented a new one and the transmission still clunks. Unbelievable to not have fixed in a 2023 vs a 2017 model. The AC compressor went when the car was 4 years old. Paint bubbled on the hood. They repaint it but now it chips off. Other than that a really comfortable drive. The reliability is just way subpar vs Honda and Toyota. I usually shop those brands but my wife really liked the ride, her position in the driver seat, and the styling. She won’t go back after this experience. She hates getting the car serviced.

If I could give ZERO I would
We have had nothing but trouble from our Pacifica since we bought it. The transmission seems to shift super hard, making the whole van jump forward. This could be extremely dangerous. The AC in the back of the van doesn’t work 90% of the time. The right side and sliding door won’t stay locked. The left sliding door won’t open. A light went out in the back and won’t fix regardless what we do in the beeping noise for the back door stopped working. The paint is peeling off the front of the van.A light went out in the back and won’t fix regardless what we do in the beeping noise for the back door stopped working.

Transmission and electrical problems beware
Constant transmission issues from the start, several electrical issues like side door not functioning, rear camera freezes and stops working, usb ports not working, etc... Currently van decided to go into limp mode and get stuck in like third gear or something. The stowaway features are good but for major issues like the transmittion I would avoid. Also chrysler doesnt cover the transmition as they dont see it as a recall or other big issue so their use of a faulty transmission system is not a good idea.

Money trap dangerous vehicle
So many times this van has almost caused me an accident. Today with my son in the car the power steering freezers up in the middle of a left hand turn. I've had issues before where the 2nd battery drains the first battery, it needs constant tune ups. The emergency parking break will literally go on in the middle of driving also almost causing accidents. I hate this vehicle and still have a years worth of payments. I wish Chrysler would just admit they've made a death trap and let men out of my payments.

My take on Chrysler pacifica 2017.
The bolts from the seats came out and had to be re-tightened. Transmission problems - revving too high. Comfortable. Sliding door issues - noise and opening by itself. Wipers do not last long, no matter what brand. The rear hatch had to be fixed because it wouldn't open. Gas mileage is good. Been in the shop more than 6 times in the 3 years it is been owned.

Spends more time in the shop than in the garage
It has been in the shop on two different occasions for over a month each time. We have only had it for a year and only drove it 10 of the last 12 months. Having to constantly change between loaner vehicles is a pain. I would never bye this vehicle again and will gladly sell it if I can find anyone to buy it.

Do not buy Chrysler Pacifica.
The doors continually open again when using an automatic close. There seems to be a lag in the electrical system. Pickup is horrible in it too when coming off the line. It handles horribly as well. I cannot wait to return it at the end of the lease it is the worst vehicle I have ever driven.

Pacifica review, be cautious
AC is inconsistent. The electronics for opening the doors often fail. The transmission skips and the headlights don't work. I've had several recalls and spent a lot of time in the shop. There is a weird smell when the heat is on. I shouldn't be having these problems with a new car.

Power steering problems over several times.
My vehicle brand new would lose power steering. This happened several times and all they did was give me a free oil change. My doors are constantly creaky and nothing is ever resolved without getting extremely rude. Takes weeks to get a resolution from Chrysler.

Total junk
Worst vehicle ever. Way too many electrical issues, “service shifter” locks the van up in the middle of the street. The severe safety issue with this van, the wife was almost killed twice when the vehicle locks her up in park after backing into a street.

109000 miles had to replace tires once
I have a 2017 lx (base) with 109000 miles. It’s been a great vehicle for us requiring only routine maintenance and tires. Can get 30mph on the highway.
