2017 GMC Sierra 1500: A Reliable Pickup Truck with a Few Braking Problems and Safety Recalls

The GMC Sierra is GM’s best-selling competitor to the Ford F-150, and its professional-grade engineering is its key advantage. However, there were some problems with faulty airbags and unintended braking issues.

Key Points

  • The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 has had five recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as well as almost 200 registered complaints.
  • Two recalls address potentially faulty front airbags that might not deploy in an accident. Over 3.6 million GM vehicles were affected in the first recall.
  • A recall affecting nearly 3.5 million GM units was issued for stiff brakes. Included models saw a decrease in power brake assist, requiring more effort from the driver to stop the vehicle.
  • Consumers reported issues with engine shudder or stalling on higher mileage vehicles. No official response has been taken to correct the problem.
  • While some of its issues are worrisome, most real problems have had a recall sent out to resolve matters. Overall the 2017 Sierra is a recommended buy.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 has Two Similar Recalls for Airbag Issues

The 2017 GMC Sierra has five recalls, including two similar recalls over front airbags that may not deploy in the event of an accident. In affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the airbag sensor software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the front airbags and the seat belt pretensioners may not occur during a wreck.

The good news is most of the 3.6 million General Motors vehicles involved in the first recall, and many vehicles from the second recall have been remedied.

Stiff Brakes are Among Common Complaints from 2017 GMC Sierra Owners

The 2017 GMC Sierra has almost 200 registered complaints with the NHTSA, and the majority of them address problems with the brakes and powertrain. Owners have reported experiencing issues with a hard brake pedal with little to no stopping power. However, some consumers have complained about this same pedal feel at higher speeds. In most cases, standing firmly on the pedal added enough pressure to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Being one of the most pervasive single complaints of the Sierra, GMC did issue a recall to remedy this issue for owners. As it turns out, the electronic brake control module needs to be reprogrammed as it appears the vacuum pump would decrease the amount of brake assist, therefore increasing the amount of braking effort needed by the driver and delivering a “hard pedal” or “wooden pedal” feel described by many owners.

As of mid-July 2020, over half of the 3.4 million General Motors vehicles included in this recall have been remedied.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Faces Ongoing Complaints About Faulty Automatic Braking System

Unresponsive brakes and hard brake pedals were not the only braking issues owners have reported for the Sierra pickup, leading to another recall of braking-related components.

While not as pervasive as the vacuum pump and electronic brake control module issues mentioned above, some consumers noted uneven braking across the vehicle leading the pickup to pull left or right during a stop.

This is due to a software issue causing the vehicle to activate the driveline-protection system which will apply the brake to the wheel on the opposite side of a defective or failing sensor.

General Motors has identified over half a million vehicles that may suffer from this issue. Over 64% of these vehicles have been remedied as of mid-July 2020.

Stalling and Hesitation from the Engine in 2017 Sierras is not Addressed by Recall

While most of the major concerns reported by consumers have been addressed by a formal recall with suitable repairs in place, one issue remains unaddressed by GMC.

Many customer complaints surfaced showing the engine responsiveness to sputter or stall when the accelerator is pressed, leaving many customers to feel unsafe. In most instances, the vehicle was taken to one or more shops that couldn’t duplicate or repair the problem. One reported instance was solved by reprogramming the computer systems controlling the throttle, while others remain unrepaired.

Despite Airbag and Braking Woes, the Sierra is a Recommended Pickup Truck

Ultimately, the 2017 GMC Sierra is a competent entry into the highly competitive full-size pickup truck segment. It commands a premium price tag versus its competition but also delivers a premium experience in top trims. It was its capability, reliability, and overall premium nature that lead us to recommend the top two trims in a previous article as a premium and luxurious pickup for the modern consumer.

Must have gotten a lemon
Bought this new in 2017. It's beautiful but: at 18 months (1), 42,000 miles, the turn signal went out. The cost was 1,000.00 to change a "corroded wire". All went well for another 18 months, then at 3yrs and 90,000 miles, another wire was corroded (2) and needed replaced (Dealership covered the price). Then within 2 weeks (3) the check engine light was on and it needed a wheel bearing changed and other wires were corroded. S900.00. About 1 week later, the check engine light is back on and cost 120.00 to change some wires. (4). I picked it up on Tuesday this week and on Wednesday (5) the trailer light came on- lots of loud beeping. FYI It does not have a trailer hitched to it, and the check engine light is on again, and the seat is frequently vibrating and can not be shut off. I'm taking it back for the last time and will trade it in for anything other than a GM. So 5 times in 18 months of corroded wires- obviously poor design, because they have not been able to correct the problem. And wheel bearing out at 90,000 miles is a first for all my 40 years of owning pickups. GM has not accepted any responsibility in the poor design or build of this vehicle, which I paid 55,000 for in 2017.

It looks fancy but it’s still the biggest pile of garbage I’ve ever owned
I will never buy one of these pieces of sh** ever again. The most worthless undependable most expensive money pit I have ever experienced. Very dangerous to drive as one minute you have no brakes and the next minute they are working on their own without even touching the brake pedal. In the recall it claims may cause an accident, well it sure does. And the airbags don’t even work properly when the brakes do cause a crash. In my opinion it’s too much technology that hasn’t been perfected and should have never been used until it was. Oh and for the seatbelts. Might as well forget those too. The whole truck is a ticking time bomb waiting to self destruct.

Never again
I’ve owned a 2002 Tahoe had 286,000miles when i sold it . Not a minuets problem out of this vehicle. Also had 2005 Avalanche. 270,000 miles tranny takes a dump. Which i thought was wonderful. Gave it to my daughter. “ wish i had got another one” such a sweet riding truck. And now 2017 GMC Sierra. 68,000 tranny shits the bed $4200. 75,000 Miles, pinion gear goes out $1800 I do travel a lot. 100,000 miles AC takes a hot dump. Condenser $1608.00 Truly will never buy a GM product. This truck looks nice, but is a total POS.

Horrible investment
This is the last GMC I’ll ever own. Injector issues at 49,000 miles and now major valve train issues at just over 50,000 miles. It was in the shop for about a week, I was told it was corrosion and carbon deposits on the valves and on the pistons. (GMC covered that repair). So within 100 miles of it being in the shop it now sounds worse than I’ll wver believe. Check engine light blinking and the traction control on and off, the truck actually shook so much the antenna made a whipping sound!!

Camshaft Replaced at 21k miles
The check engine light came on at 21k miles the trouble code that came up was P0302 misfire on the number 2 cylinder the dealership said it was a fuel injector then they said it was a sticky lifter or valve then they came to the conclusion that is was the camshaft and they have had it for 2 weeks now making the repairs, I have 2000 Chevy Silverado that has basically the same motor has 270k miles has never had any problems like this before.

Evap Solonoid issue
I bought this truck to work on a each with dirt roads and to pull trailers. In 24,000 miles of operating it has been in the shop 4 times for the same issue. The evap solenoid was replaced three times. This has not been an issue with my older vehicles, not my friends 02 silvered. I can't use it for the purpose I bought it for, so for now I'm reluctant to use it at all.

A multi-purpose truck.
The only problem I have found is the wireless charger in the center console does not work well. I have been told there is an upgrade and the newer models have this fixed, but I have not personally looked into it yet.

I deliver mail out of my truck, and have to sit in the middle to drive. The seat is not as comfortable as my last truck. It is an inch or 2 wider, making it harder to reach mailboxes. The truck sits an inch or 2 higher than my last one as well. At just about one year old and just under 36000 miles the transmission went. I have had problems with my radio from the beginning, 3 trips to the garage and the clock still loses time and the radio will just reset at random.
I am not happy with it. I wish I had kept my old truck, but it had too many miles and I needed reliable for mail delivery. So much for that.

Good truck
It tends to shift hard. But I understand. A lot of Sierra's have this problem. Gas mileage is not the best.

Dealership looked for several options when trying to finance it
Been in shop for a couple of different things several times on the same things

Can't wait to get rid of it
Worst truck I have ever had and I have had a few of them.
