Orange 2017 Nissan Rogue From Front-Driver Side

It just makes sense that the better you know your vehicle, the better prepared you are to keep it maintained. With proper maintenance, the 2017 Nissan Rogue will certainly become a family heirloom.

But to do so, it’s going to need proper engine upkeep, beginning with the right amount and type of oil.

What is the 2017 Nissan Rogue oil type and capacity?

According to its owners and service manual, the 2017 Nissan Rogue has a recommended engine oil viscosity of SAE 0W-20. If you’re going to change the filter, you’re looking at needing about 4 7/8 U.S. quarts of oil. If you aren’t changing the filter, then you only need 4 ½ U.S. quarts.

As an alternative, the manufacturer says SAE 5W-30 conventional petroleum-based oil is fine to use and will still meet the necessary specifications and requirements to keep your warranty in place, if your vehicle is still under one. Capacity will remain the same.

If you’re not familiar with different types of oil, you may still have some unanswered questions. It’s always good to learn as much as you can, especially if you’re thinking about purchasing a new vehicle. Thankfully, this article aims to give you all the information you need to know about oil for the 2017 Nissan Rogue.

Oil Viscosity Explained

If you don’t remember anything else about engine oils, it’s that the manufacturer’s recommendations for your particular vehicle should drive any decisions you make about your vehicle’s oil maintenance.

That being said, understanding a bit about the weights of oil can be helpful when it comes time to change your Nissan Rogue’s oil. This is especially true if you’re going to tackle the job yourself, but it’s also useful if you take your Rogue to a trusted car care center, because you are likely to be asked which oil you prefer.

When you hear the term “oil weight,” what it actually refers to is the viscosity of oil. In other words, oil weight tells you how well an oil will flow at a given temperature. A 30-weight oil is going to flow more quickly or easier, for example, than a 50-weight oil.

The number ahead of the “W,” such as the “0” in the Rogue’s recommended SAE 0W-20 refers to the oil’s cold-weather viscosity, with the “W” standing for winter. The number “20” refers to the oil’s hot weather viscosity.

The higher the number for either, the thicker that oil is at the specified temperature. “SAE” simply refers to Society of Automotive Engineers, the entity that developed the oil rating system.

Oil that flows more quickly might sound like a good thing, but keep in mind as well that lower weight oils may not offer quite as much protection for your engine when operating at higher temperatures or even if the vehicle is operating under more stressful situations.

Using a heavier oil than called for, however, can have repercussions, ranging from reduced fuel economy to shortened engine life. Again, your best bet is to go with the manufacturer’s recommendation when it comes to the weight of oil you choose. Ignoring what’s in the owner’s and service manual could also negate a vehicle’s warranty.

But What About Synthetic Oil?

The other question you’re likely to face when it comes to oil maintenance for your 2017 Nissan Rogue is whether to choose conventional or synthetic oil. What’s the difference?

Conventional oils are refined from crude oil. As the name implies, synthetic oils are man-made. They are developed using chemical compounds that are specifically designed to deliver the best features of crude oil without the drawbacks, like contaminants. This means there is a lower risk of engine buildup and sludge with synthetic oils.

As with oil weights, you’ll want to follow the motor oil type recommended by Nissan for the 2017 Rogue—in this case, Nissan is recommending you use 0W-20, which is only available as a synthetic oil.
