2017 Nissan Rogue Review: Bad Year For The Unreliable SUV With Mechanical Problems

Alex Showalter
Mar 8, 2022

The 2017 Rogue only lasts about 200,000 miles with serious transmission and fuel issues. At $19,152 – 24,238, it’s not worth the money given so many problems.

Cabin room is very good with comfortable seats, the information technology is easy to use and there’s excellent cargo space.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Acceleration is very weak, advanced safety features are expensive and the transmission is unresponsive.

Is the 2017 Nissan Rogue a Good Used SUV?

  • No, the 2017 Rogue is bad. We have received a lot of negative owner reviews mentioning serious drivetrain issues, leaky sunroofs, and poor performance.
  • Reliability ratings are below average with widespread transmission problems. Avoid 2014-2017 models, and go with a 2019 or newer.
  • One weak four-cylinder engine is available.
  • Fuel economy is excellent at up to 29 mpg combined.
  • Safety ratings are okay, getting four out of five stars in government crash tests, however, the Rogue earns a Top Safety Pick+ Award.

2017 is a year buyers should avoid. There are fewer complaints on the newer 2019 models, but prices are high at $5,000 more and there are better SUVs on the market.

This vehicle is AWD, which is very important in the snow and other random weather forecasts we receive in the Washington, DC area.
This vehicle is perfect for me. I enjoy it the most because of Its size and it is all wheel drive. I also like it because it has a heated steering wheel.

It is roomy and sturdy. It has great features like Bluetooth. I like the way it looks. It rides smoothly. It is dependable. It has great safety features.

Great car with great features. Could use some extra trunk space.
It's very compact yet still big enough to be roomy. It has a backup camera that increases safety and you can connect your phone to it. This allows you to call and play audio through your phone along with send texts. It could use some extra trunk space but that doesn't take away from the comfort.

Excellent gas mileage both in town and on the highway.
Excellent gas mileage. Comfortable inside. Modern look. We have some problem with the driver seat. It 'clicks' every time it moves...

Good mileage and reliable.
My Nissan Rogue is a great value and a great vehicle. Good mpg and feels solid and is very quiet. Could be a little bigger but can hold many items also visibility is great.

Red beauty, that is economical.
The rogue sv has style, reliability and great performance. It is roomy for anyone that needs room and space. The interior and exterior looks sporty and sophisticated. Low maintenance and good on gas. This SUV is great buy for a single person or a family. Plenty of cargo space for groceries, tools or equipment. A great SUV.

Great for a small family!
My Nissan Rogue drives smoothly and comfortably. The seat is well suited for a shorter person as it does not dig into the back of the legs while driving. My husband who is 5'10' can also drive the vehicle comfortably. The Bluetooth audio quality is clear and reliable. The dual air-conditioning ensures passengers are comfortable at their own temperatures and heated seats are great in the winter. The backseat area cools off quickly on the summer. Large car seats fit well in the backseat with space to get children in and out. The back has enough room for a large umbrella stroller and groceries or a large jogging stroller and other small items. The back also has my favorite feature, floor panels that can be arranged according to need. You can create shelves and areas to contain cargo so nothing spills. There are many different configurations. I have had the vehicle for almost two years and have had no issues. Overall it is a great vehicle for a small family!

This is a great size SUV.
I love my Rogue only thing I don't like is the side view mirrors are right at eye level. Always have to sit up in seat to look over or around it. Always in my way when I make a turn. I also feel that when I want to accelerate doesn't have the power to take off fast.

May look good, but rides bad
Extremely loud, salesman kept us on a new road and a short trial and as we were talking it seemed not as bad. It is extremely noisy and provides a very bumpy ride. Not a pleasant car to use, hard to enjoy. Computer has needed three updates from shop all before 10,000 miles.

2017 rogue too loud and pieces fall off and rattle.
Cheaply made, very loud road noise, inside rattles. Piece fall off. It does get good gas mileage. I have not had any mechanical problems. Dealership service is bad, takes to long and costs to much. It does have a good amount of room and storage on the inside.

Mirrors that block your side views.
I have long legs and a shorter body so no way to have the seat up while back in order to see around the large side mirrors. I have now almost hit two pedestrians while making a left turn!!! The seat will not just go up without going forward.

Slow to speed up Nissan rogue.
The 2017 Nissan rogue has a very hard time speeding up, both from a complete stop and while already moving. Trying to speed up to get around drivers moving very slowly is especially an annoyance when driving this vehicle. Some have said it may be the engines that Nissan uses in its vehicles. Others believe it may be the timing of the automatic transmission. However, the issue continues to occur even when in clutchless manual. I do not suggest this vehicle.
accountCircle Maria B
Nissan Rogue not the best option.
I have had this vehicle for 2 years, it's AWD and always have issues with it. I live in the mountains where it snows a lot and need to have it for the purpose. I also commute long distance for my daughters doctors appt and feel that the gas mileage isn't the greatest. The car itself is really basic, there is nothing special that stands out. We simply needed a car after our last Nissan died with no sign or signal I had no option but to trade it in. I was under stress but wouldn't get a Nissan again.
accountCircle Judy M
Nissan Rogue built to rust quickly. Nissan doesn't seem to care.
My Nissan Rogue needed a Lot of repairs right away. Brakes had to be replaced right away. Heather Brooke. Service garage very poor. They only care about money and not the fact your car is a lemon. I feel they use cheap materials that rust up right away and then tell you it's not covered under warranty.

What Do Critics Say About the Rogue?

  • Consumer Reports finds the Rogue to be a spacious compact SUV, but has lower owner satisfaction ratings.
  • Edmunds experts rate the Rogue 3.0/5 with very comfortable front seats, but performance is weaker than rivals.
  • Kelley Blue Book gives the Rouge a 4.4/5 liking the optional third row, but finds the competitors to be better choices.

What Problems Does the 2017 Nissan Rogue Have?

Problems with the Rogue include unintentional braking, a jerky transmission, and sunroof drain line clogs.

Unintentional braking is the most common complaint from owners at around 30,000 miles. The safety system has automated braking, but sometimes there are software errors. Updating the software usually fixes the problem.

Transmission problems including vibration and shuddering issues, happen at around 45,000 miles. The transmission issues are not as widespread as they were in earlier years, but still happen. Replacing the transmission costs about $3,500, depending on local labor rates.

Leaking sunroofs are another issue mentioned by owners at around 35,000 miles. The drain line tends to get clogged and has to get cleaned out to prevent leaking. Fixing the line costs around $400.

There are three recalls including airbags, seat frame welds, and the engine harness. The most serious recall is for the engine wiring harness, which can cause the vehicle to stall.

How Long Will the 2017 Nissan Rogue Last?

A properly maintained Rouge should last about 200,000 miles, at least 100,000 miles less than reliable SUVs like the Crosstrek. Regular annual maintenance costs are low at $326 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As a Rogue reaches over 100,000 miles, owners should prepare to replace blower motors for $330, fuel sending units for $1,200, and control arms for $450.

accountCircle Sinead O

It is very reliable and I've had no problems with mechanics so far. It is not as spacious as would like it be, with a car seat in the rear.

accountCircle Amy S

So far my Nissan rogue has been a very reliable car with reasonably good gas mileage. I had one problem with the moonroof seal after a car wash. The dealership promptly repaired it under the warranty.

accountCircle Michele P

I have owned this vehicle for three years. I have never experienced any problems at all with my rogue.

accountCircle Teresa W

Reliable- yes. I have owned mine for 6 months and so far the only problem is the wheel rubs when turning. I plan to take it back to the dealership to be corrected.

accountCircle COURTNEY W

Yes, it is reliable. It does not have any problems. I stay on top of routine oil changes and other maintenance items to ensure optimal performance.

accountCircle Olga D

So far so good. If you take care of it and do regular maintenance shouldn't have any maintenance issues.

accountCircle Shekia E

I think the 2017 Nissan rogue s is reliable, however I heard that the transmission that they have is faulty.

accountCircle Kristen M

Yes the Nissan rogue sv is reliable. I have not noticed any problems with the vehicle. There's usually no issues with the Nissan rogue.

How Much is the 2017 Nissan Rogue Worth?

Blue book prices range from $19,152 – 24,238, which is cheaper than popular SUVs including the Crosstrek or RAV4. When new, the price range was $23,820 to $31,710. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 8% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Rogue?

The Rogue comes in three main models with additional options and packages available. Technology is great since the infotainment system was updated in 2017. The next full redesign is for the 2021 model.

S is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Folding Rear Seats
  • Five-inch Infotainment Screen With four-speaker Stereo
  • Bluetooth and USB Connectivity

SV is next in the lineup adding good features including:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Automatic Headlights
  • Keyless Entry and Ignition
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control
  • Six-speaker Stereo System

SL is the luxury model and adds:

Is the Nissan Rogue a Safe SUV?

Safety scores are okay with a four-star crash test rating, fortunately, the Rouge comes with some great advanced safety features.

  • Standard safety features include a rearview camera, anti-lock brakes, and side curtain airbags.
  • Optional safety features on the SL model include a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane-keep assistance.

What Engines Come In the Rogue?

Only one relatively weak four-cylinder engine is available with 170 horsepower. Performance is poor, taking 9.3 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour.

What Colors Does the Rogue Come In?

How Big is the Rogue?

The 2017 Nissan Rogue is a compact SUV similar to the Equinox and Sportage. Passenger room is decent with room for adults in the second row. The optional third row only fits small children.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the Rogue Compare to the Competition?

The highest-rated midsize SUV is the more expensive Subaru Crosstrek. Performance is better in the Crosstrek, but the Rogue has more room. The Crosstrek is a better choice since it will last much longer.

Another rival is the more expensive Honda CR-V. Where the Honda stands out is with more high-tech features, but the Rogue has an optional third row. Overall, the CR-V wins since there are fewer mechanical problems.

Stylish with good function and convenience features.
Reliable. Good gas mileage. Good in snow with AWD and option to lock in 4wd. Love the keyless entry and push start, remote starter, heated seats and steering wheel. Power liftgate is convenient. Does have blind spots that can be an issue, but I have learned to adjust.

Vehicle drives very smooth. It is durable and great in inclement weather. I wish I had gotten the heated steering wheel because that would have been very helpful during the cold winter months. Overall, great vehicle and would highly recommend for an all season SUV.

Perfect car for any lifestyle.
I have had no issues. The gas mileage is pretty good, I love that it turns off and just uses the battery when we idle it helps save gas and my favorite feature is our seat warmers since I have a bad back and it helps a lot when driving long distances (which I do 2 times a month or more). Both of my children’s car seats fit in the back with room for someone else to sit in the back as well and it is got quite a bit of trunk space. We love our rogue.

The perfect family vehicle.
I do not think there is a specific problem with the rogue that makes me dislike it. I personally love the vehicle, it is the perfect SUV size for my families' needs, the trunk space makes grocery shopping so easy as everything fits in the back of the car, there are safety features that I use daily & the vehicle has a simple but beautiful look to it.

My experience with my Nissan rogue 2017.
A really reliable car to raise a family in. Enough spacious and very comfortable with a great price. I will recommend extending warranty for anything that can happen due to my transmission failure within 3 years but still reliable. Does not use up to much gas and not expensive to maintain.

The Nissan rogue is an advantage for mommies!
I love my vehicle! As a mom of a toddler it gives us a lot of room for both my son and I. I love the push start mechanism as well as the heated seats. Bluetooth is a must for me since I prefer to listen to my songs instead of the radio. Not to mention my son has his own playlist he likes to listen to on the road as well. The backup camera and sensors are a huge advantage as it allows me to safely navigate my car anywhere. As a mom that is such a huge bonus. A couple concerns I have are that I wish there was more cup holders in the back for the kids. It would be beneficial since my little would have a place to put his cup either by the window or in the middle seat. Another concern is that I wish I could open the trunk with a button up front or on the key fob like some other cars have. I have to manually open it. Which can be a nuisance when my hands are full with groceries and an energetic toddler. One superficial feature I would have love to have is a sunroof. My other car had it and it was an older car (2013) so it weird that my car has sensors, backup camera, and heated seats but no sunroof.

Very nice car overall. A lot more pros than cons. Worth it.
The back seat does not have a lot of room. But the seats in the front and back are very comfortable. I like how the back seats can go back and forward and incline. The car seems to have very bad blind spots. Trunk is very spacious. Needs more storage in the front.

Reasons to buy a 2017 Nissan rogue.

2017 nissan rogue sv 2wd 4 cylinder automatic transmission.
I really like my nissan rogue. The only problem I have had with the vehicle so far is the charger port. I haven't had any issue with reliability from this car at all. The only thing I would change is the size. For me, this was a downsize due to fueling costs of my much larger sequoia. The rogue run well on 87 octane fuel. I have not ever experienced shaking or stalling using this fuel grade. The seats are heated and cloth covered in my car. I like it because in the summer they do not stick to my skin. My particular car has a backup camera and available satellite radio. I didn't opt for the navigation built-in. Though they do come with that feature in some. I like that I am able to haul around my dogs and purchase the amount of dog food needed & it all fits in the rear gate of the car. All in all, this was a great purchase.

Very nice Nissan rogue! - good Bluetooth, loud engine.
Pros: very nice car; not too small but still spacious; nice rear view camera for reversing; has Bluetooth capabilities for cell phone; 12 programmable stations// cons: headlights on auto do not turn off right way, leading to battery dying slowly; loud when accelerating quickly such as entering freeway. Overall, very reliable and I like this car!

Pro's and con's of the 2017 nissan rogue.
Great on gas mileage. Comfortable interior. Smooth ride. Sleek profile. Tons of interior room. Back up camera helps a lot. Problems: not sure what it is, but in heavy rain the pattern or trajectory of the windshield wipers makes an add noise pushing water off the side of the vehicle. Maybe it is the location of the side window visors, not sure. And in cold weather, you will never get the air pressure in your tires right, so do not even try. Just get used to driving with the "hey, you are tired pressure is low" light on the dash.

Nissan rogue pros and cons.
There is a lot of cargo area for a SUV of this class. It drives well and has nice safety features such as safety shield and a rear back-up camera. Two of the biggest downsides to me are that the lights do not automatically turn on and there is no remote start.

2017 Nissan rogue sport review.
The Nissan rogue has a comfortable ride, and it moves effortlessly and maneuver through twisty roads and packed parking lots. The Nissan rogue is the most fuel-efficient compact SUV available. Performance, while its 170 horsepower four cylinder engine delivers enough power for city driving, it has a hard time accelerating on the highway speeds.
accountCircle Simi S on June 2, 2021
The Nissan rogue is an economical beauty.
The Nissan rogue is a very reliable automobile. The ride of the SUV is very smooth and it handles quite easily. The air conditioner and heating system is also exceptional. Although it is an SUV, the rogue is very economical on fuel usage. The lone drawback is that the seats are a little firm for my taste which might not be a problem for most. The trunk area offers enough room for storage.
accountCircle Mike S on May 30, 2021
Adequate compact SUV for the price.
The rogue does not communicate well with my iPhone. It often has difficulty connecting to the phone and sometimes will lose the connection while driving. The performance has been as expected for a four cylinder vehicle. The best feature has been the birds eye view when parking and getting around tight spaces.

Rogue 2017. The rogue is very spacious and is a great cat for a family.
For an SUV, the gas mileage is very good. The gas tank holds about 14 gallons so it is not that big but the gas mileage is still good. The car is very spacious and the trunk allow some with a cover to help you hide your items. The rogue rides really smooth and functions very well. I love the back windshield wiper. Overall good car. The center console is spacious and it also has a cup holder in the back seat. This is great if you have kids.

I always have my car set to eco mode and what I have noticed I get amazing mileage. The eco mode helps me get great mileage as well as helps me save on gas. The Nissan rogue (2017) is a nice urban car.
The cons are that this vehicle has a bit more of a blind spot when turning. If getting a standard model, it has less ability to make sharp turns. It is a comfortable and reliable car in means of gas and comfort inside. The trunk of the rogue is very good. It can hold a lot more than a smaller vehicle could but still being just a nice size unlike a van. I have had the vehicle for a long time and has not started to show any performance issues.

So far it is been great, no mechanical issues. I bought the vehicle used but I have kept up the oil changes and overall maintenance of the vehicle so it is been running like a champ. No slips in the transmission, it is great on gas, and I can even take small trips in it. The only consideration I would input is adding a 3rd row in all models. That would send the SUV over the top.

My vehicle is comfortable, has a great look to it and I love that it has remote start, smart key function, and heated seats. But I do wish it had a bigger trunk and a bigger screen with navigation. Besides that the car has been great for me for the past 3 years.

The feature I like is the cars blindsided detection.
Not many problems with vehicle the only problem I had was with battery but that is because dealership gave me an old one runs smoothly and is very roomy and the seats are comfy and I love the Bluetooth the stereo is great and the bass is pretty good for it being a Nissan all in all great care with pretty good mileage as well.

The Nissan is spacious and smooth.
I really like my Nissan rogue. It is comfortable and spacious, has a lot of room for all the passengers and a big trunk. The drive is smooth and I haven't had any issue with anything. I like the radio display and the ability for Bluetooth connection. I also really like the digital tire reader so I know when my tires are low and what the psi is without having to measure it for myself.

Great economic vehicle that will last well past payments.
Great gas mileage. Easy maintenance. Longevity - runs well even at high miles. Handles well in all weather conditions. Fold flat seating for transporting large items. Adjusting seats. Idles rough at times. Small rear wiper. Dash map/back up view poorly lite - hard to see.

Nissan the best of the SUVs.
This Nissan rogue is comfortable for long trips. Lots of space. Paint does seem to mar easily. Good visibility when driving. The car has good traction in the snow. Gas mileage is very good. This is the second Nissan we've owned. The storage that can be hidden is also a bonus and also extra space. I feel safe in this car and it rides smoothly.
