2017 Ram 1500 Pickup Truck Problems and Recalls

The Ram 1500’s reputation for reliability is well-earned, but it does have its issues. Namely, wonky electrical systems & a whole bunch of NHTSA recalls.

Key Points

  • The 2017 Ram 1500’s most common problems are electrical, but these issues are often mistaken for transmission failure as they affect the powertrain control module.
  • There have been two recalls addressing the truck’s potential to roll away if parked without the parking brake engaged, but the NHTSA investigation on the matter remains open.
  • The truck has been recalled by the NHTSA ten times in total as of the time of this writing.

2017 Ram 1500 is a Good Pickup, but it’s had a Few Problems

From the 3.0L Turbo Diesel V6 engine to the spacious interior and handsome all-American styling, there’s a lot to love about the 2017 Ram 1500. Sure, the F-150 may lead the full-size class in sales, but test-drive a Ram and you’ll see why some people swear by it.

But, there’s no such thing as a car, SUV, or pickup that doesn’t have its share of problems, and the Ram 1500 is no exception to the rule.

Now, the bad news is that the truck has ten recalls on record with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), plus one investigation. But the good news is that it’s considered to be a fairly affordable mid-size truck to keep running when we’re talking regular maintenance costs, and severe engine troubles are rare. So don’t take the following as a warning to stay away from the 2017 Ram 1500, just a heads-up on problems to be on the lookout for.

The 2017 Ram 1500 has an Above-average Rollaway Risk

When you hear that there’s an open investigation on a vehicle, that always sounds scary. But there are a few things worth noting about the vehicle rollaway investigation that the NHTSA has been running on the Ram 1500 since December 2016.

The rollaway issue sees a number of Ram 1500s and Durangos rolling down hills while in Park. So far, this has resulted in 43 complaints, with an alleged nine injuries and 25 crashes. Sounds bad, but in most of these cases, the engine was running, and in all cases, the parking brake was off.

That doesn’t mean that you should expect your truck to start rolling down hills because you forgot the parking brake. But, the issue is hardly a death sentence for the 2017 Ram 1500’s reputation as a safe, reliable truck. If you remember to put on the brake, your truck should stay put.

Further, the investigation may remain open as of the time of this writing, as it is unclear if all of these rollaway incidents stem from the same problem, but a recall actually has been issued to address rollaway, with the notification having been sent to the owners and dealers of around 1.5 million Ram pickups in late 2017. And a follow-up recall was issued a few months later, addressing nearly two hundred thousand 2017-2018 Rams that the first recall missed.

In short: don’t let an open investigation scare you off of a 2017 Ram. If you make sure your truck has undergone the appropriate repairs, and if you remember your parking brake, you shouldn’t have to worry about rollaway.

NHTSA Safety Recalls for the 2017 Ram 1500

The 2017 Ram 1500 currently has ten recalls on file with the NHTSA, ranging all across the spectrum in size and severity, from relatively minor issues like the tailgate failing to a latch, to more severe concerns including potential fire hazards and airbag failure.

One of the most worrying recalls affecting the truck is also the most recent, an August 2021 recall for potential side curtain airbag rupture. The rupture means that not only will an airbag not deploy properly, it could even launch the end cap or other components into the cabin as a result of compressed gas escaping from the unit. An airbag is like a champagne bottle. You really need to make sure that the end cap is on there good and tight. This recall affected 212,373 Ram pickups from the 2015-2020 model years.

A less common, but still concerning recall addressed a potential fire hazard with the EGR cooler. If you’re driving a 1500 with a 3.0L Diesel engine, the truck’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation cooler may crack, allowing vaporized coolant to leak and ignite. This recall affected 107,980 Ram pickups between the 2014-2019 model years.

Recalls are always paid for by the manufacturer, and they don’t expire. Whether it’s a month-old recall for a faulty transmission or a decade-old recall for a misprint in the owner’s manual, you can drive into your nearest dealer and claim the repairs at no charge. So there’s no good reason not to use our VIN lookup tool and make sure that you’re covered.

2017 Ram 1500: Bad Wiring & Faulty Features

While the 2017 Ram 1500’s recalls are plentiful, major mechanical issues are thankfully few. The truck has 315 complaints on file with the NHTSA, and considering that the truck sold around half a million units in 2017, that only comes out to one Ram owner in every fifteen hundred experiencing an issue severe enough to bother reporting to the NHTSA.

The most common reported issues would seem to concern the engine and transmission, with 57 complaints listed under powertrain. Most of these are some variation on the truck moving when it’s not supposed to, stalling or stopping when it’s supposed to be going, or stuttering and rattling while accelerating. Basically the whole range of transmission failure issues, typically starting at under 75k miles on the odometer.

But, it might not always be the transmission.

The most common issues with this truck really come down to electronics. While the complaints may be filed under different categories, the broader patterns point to bad wiring.

What seems like a failing transmission may, in many cases, be a matter of electronic throttle control failing to properly regulate the truck’s speed. This would seem to be backed up by the fact that these “transmission failure” incidents are often accompanied by the radio and interior lights flickering on and off, warning lights flashing on after hitting a bump in the road, and the backup camera failing to engage.

While the NHTSA only has 40 complaints listed in the electrical systems category, many of the complaints you’ll find under powertrain, airbags, and vehicle speed control point directly to ECU systems and electrical components that just aren’t pulling their weight.

The bad news is that these problems can be tough to diagnose without a visit to the mechanic, but the good news is that it’s a whole lot cheaper to update an onboard computer module than it is to swap out the transmission. If your engine starts stalling and stuttering, Repair Pal estimates that the average powertrain control module replacement should run you around $745 to $758. More than you’d probably like to spend, but if you go with a CPO deal, your warranty should cover it.

How Much Does it Cost to Maintain a 2017 Ram 1500 Pickup?

The bottom line on the 2017 Ram 1500 is that it has its share of issues, but only its share. Repair Pal estimates the average cost of maintenance for the truck to be around $568 a year, and they give the truck an overall rating of three and a half out of a possible five stars. Not great, not terrible, just average. But hey, you could do a whole lot worse than average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mar 27, 2022

Is the 2017 Ram 1500 a good truck?

The 2017 Ram 1500 series is considered to be a good full-size pickup truck if you are in the market for something that can haul and tow. This competes directly with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series and the Ford F-150. If you're looking for a truck these are the three leaders in the market and they each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Where the Ram 1500 series shines is that it still comes with its 5.7L HEMI V8 engine that produces great power and the technology used for the infotainment system is class-leading for the year. Where the Ram falls short is that it does have a lower towing capacity than the competition, and the 6-speed transmission is no longer offered.

Overall if you want a full-size truck then it would be a good idea to check out a 2017 Ram 1500 series. These are good trucks that can offer you a lot of versatility and they can last a very long time as long as you take care of them.

Does the 2017 Ram 1500 have manifold bolt problems?

Over the years the Ram 1500 series has garnered a reputation for having a problem with the exhaust manifold bolts. This problem persists on the 2017 Ram 1500 series with the 5.7L V8 and they are still known to wear out and snap off over time. The exhaust manifold bolts at the rear of the engine are known to heat-cycle a lot and that winds up making them brittle which results in them snapping off.

If you notice that your truck's exhaust has gotten louder that is usually a sign that there is a leak somewhere at the exhaust manifold. When the bolts snap it causes the back of the manifold to come loose from the engine and that leads to a noisy exhaust leak that can be difficult to repair.

If your exhaust manifold bolts do wind up breaking there are kits on the market that can help you drill out the old studs and replace them with new ones. The new bolts and studs tend to be made of higher-quality steel that does not get as brittle as easily.

Why do Ram 1500 series trucks have transmission problems?

The main reason that Ram 1500 series are known to have transmission problems is due to damage to the internal components in the transmission. Throughout the years Ram, and Dodge, transmissions have been known to have problems with fluid levels which leads to excessive wear and tear on the gears and bearings in the transmission. These lead to them wearing out faster than some of their competition.

In the 2017 Ram 1500 series, transmission problems are a known problem as well and these issues are usually caused by a transmission control module issue. The TCM on the truck is what tells it how to shift and what gear it should be in, when this has any software or electrical issues you will notice problems shifting between gears, and the truck will drive rough.

If you notice that you're having transmission problems the best thing to do is let a dealership take a look at it and see if there are any software updates to resolve the problem. After that, the only thing you can do is drain the fluid and see if there are any signs of wear and tear on the gears.

ZER0 Problems
I have a 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn crew cab. I bought it new with 186 miles. (Dealer drove it here from another dealer) The truck has 28656 miles as of today. I have never returned the truck for any reason. I have never had even one issue with this vehicle. This is the best truck I have ever owned. I change oil every 5000 mi. With Pennzoil Full Synthetic and WIX filters. I rotate the tires every 7500 miles. I keep the truck clean and waxed, vacuumed and clean. My previous 2014 Ram had water leakage problems but not this truck. I am trading next year and Ram seems to be my obvious choice. I was always a Chevy man before but had numerous problems with them. I know others may disagree but it's Ram for me next time!

Never been back to the dealer.
I bought my 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn crew cab 4X4 new in Sept. 2017. It now has 28500 miles and I have had zero problems. Nothing! NADA!. This is the best truck I have ever owned. I change oil at 5000 miles with full synthetic. I rotate the tires every 8000 mi. Brakes are at at least 60%, tires about the same. Plenty of towing power for me. My only gripe, and this is very minor, is that I cannot move the truck with the drivers door open. It goes into Auto-park mode. This should be tied to speed somehow so you can look back with the door open below 10 mph or so. Fit and finish is top notch, motor and trans work perfectly, heated steering wheel is welcome in my climate! Love it!

Have had faulty back up camera since I bought new...had replaced under warranty and then stopped working again few months later. Went back to dealership and they said it was fine and would not replace again (even though I had 5 videos of camera not working all within previous 2 weeks)...now out of warranty and camera is still out pretty much all the time....only works sometimes if I close tail gate hard but only for a couple days. Truck just hit 40,000 miles and transmission is over revving and feels like slipping hard...willbtake to dealership next week to see if they will cover as I'm 3 months past the 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty (but only at 40,000 miles)

Automatic Power Steering Locks up.
I was driving my Ram and I went to turn right and the steering wheel lock and the check the power steering light came on. I stop and turn the truck off. I took the truck to the mechanic and he said that it automatic power steering problem. The part cost 1200 at autozone just think how much it cost at the dealer.Chrysler needs to have a recall on this part. I have talk to other Ram owners and they have the same problem. Who do we talk to get Chrysler to do a Recall.

2017 Dodge ram Sport (POWER STEERING GEAR FAILURE)
Driving on Highway and Power Steering Gear failed. Truck tires immediately locked up causing a dangerous situation. Dodge Knows about this problem but won't recall due to parts issue. Over$3000 for the repairs!!!. It is time Ram recalls these 2017 Ram sport Models. Anybody else have Power steering gear issues. Get the word out so this can be recalled preventing someone from being Killed

Transmission went out at 32K miles
I use my ram 1500 Big horn 4x4 for road trips, never had towed anything. And at 32K miles my transmission went out. Was still under warranty, so the dealership replaced it for free. Now at 62k miles and my transmission is shifting rough, and I mean it feels like I got rear ended. So disappointed on the RAM truck. I bought this truck brand new and having all this issues.

Gas mileage
I've overall had no problems but the recent problem I had is my truck went from 18 miles per gallon down to 12 within like 2 weeks. The dealer said everything is fine nothing is malfunctioning everything is working great on my truck but my gas mileage just is horrible now I'm getting 300 miles to a tank when I used to get 420. I currently have 72'000 miles on the truck

Drivetrain Issue
Truck has a drive train problem, when stopped at a light as you take your foot off the brake and release the drivetrain you feel a heavy clunk , like the driveshaft is falling into a relaxed position. The driveshaft was replaced at 6800 mi for same problem was then ok for few months now does same thing but even worse at only 15,000 miles. I'm not happy.

2017 Ram 1500 with 30,000 miles.
I have had my Ram truck for a year or so. Immediately it began to have a dangerous steering problem where the wheel would jerk me in another direction. This ended up being some valve that controls the steering. Also, I have had numerous recalls on all sorts of things on this truck. My driver door after only 30,000 miles squeals like crazy.

Steering wheel control issue
It's amazing. Nothing has ever bothered me about it other than some faulty controls on the steering wheel that include the cruise control and music controls. Theses controls have Been on and off for 2 years. Other than a few oil changes, I have never had to take my ram into the shop for fix ups or for any servicing issues.

Driver side no heat at vents!!
I have a 2017 Ram. Every YouTube video I’ve watched, none have shown a truck of this year. Not looking forward to removing basically the dash to investigate. All actuators function correctly, heater core is fine. Just wish there was an easier solution from dealers side.

Great vehicle, 4x4, Flatbed, Bluetooth Stereo, Comfortable, Reliable
There are times where I go and start the car and I will turn the key and the car will not turn over. I would then take the key out and insert it again and the car will turn over. This is the only problem that I am experiencing at the time.

Purchased new in 2017 with lifetime warranty. 53,809 miles. Only issues that I've had were water leakage from bad seal on window and cab vents. I've had a 6" BDS lift and 35" KO2 tires on for 52,200 miles. Extremely happy with my truck.

Good, reliable vehicle with plenty of space in the back seat.
The only problem I had was the fuel pump broke, but it was under warranty and was completely covered. This was a fluke thing. I am very happy with my vehicle. It is very reliable and it makes it through the snow very well.
