White 2018 Ford Explorer From Driver Side

The Ford Explorer has been in production for three decades. It is the 13th most popular car model. It’s an excellent family vehicle, and it’s capable of taking you on adventures as well.

However, you might want to turn the interior lights off at some point during these adventures, and if you haven’t already figured it out, you may be a little confused.

How do you turn off the interior lights on a 2018 Ford Explorer?

If you have ambient lighting, you can turn it off from the touchscreen. If the light stays on when the rear hatch is open, you’ll need to trick the Explorer into thinking it’s closed. You’ll do this by pushing the latch while the hatch is open.

History of the Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer was immensely popular when it was released. It outsold the Jeep Cherokee. By 1994, it was the ninth-most popular vehicle in America.

The first generation Explorer was available as a two and four-door version. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with available four-wheel drive. The engine is a 4.0L (245 ci) V6 with 155 horsepower. It had a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.

The Explorer Sport became available in 1991 and remained in production until 2003. This two-door model is 10 inches shorter than the four-door Explorer. It sacrifices seating but provides better maneuverability.

The Explorer Sport Trac was released in 2001 and remained until 2010. The first Sport Trac was designed on an extended wheelbase. It offered the features of an SUV with a shortened truck bed. It had four doors.

In 2007, the Sport Trac got a makeover. It was based on the 4th generation Explorer. Both are powered by a 4.0L V6 and an automatic 5-speed transmission.

The fifth-generation Explorer debuted in 2011 and ran through 2019. In 2016, the styling was updated. There was a greater focus on technology, including an infotainment system. The engine was updated as well. The 2.3L (137.87 ci) engine provided 280 horsepower.

How Do You Turn of the Interior Lights in the 2018 Ford Explorer?

You can attempt to turn the interior lights off on the console, however, many owners say that the lights will still stay on when the doors or rear hatch is opened.

The battery saver feature turns the lights off ten minutes after you shut the engine off, but this doesn’t work when the doors are open either.

Ambient lighting can be turned off from the touchscreen menu. Select settings, and then ambient lighting. You can change the color, brightness, or turn the lighting off.

Many owners enjoy sitting in the rear of the Explorer with the hatch open. This is great for drive-in theatres or a relaxing evening in the country. However, with the hatch open, the interior lights will stay on. The solution is to trick the Explorer.

You’ll need to flip up the latch on the hatch until you hear it click twice. This is easy to do with a screwdriver or ink pen. Then you click the key fob to lock it, and the lights will go off. Be sure to unlock it before you close the hatch, or it will not shut.
