The 2019 Kia Optima is often overlooked for competitors like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Yet, it’s still an excellent value with tons of safety and tech features as standard equipment.

Available Trims & Special Editions for the 2019 Kia Optima
The LX trim is the base trim for the 2019 Kia Optima. Under the hood, a 2.4-liter DOHC inline-four sent 185 horses and 178 lb.-ft. of torque to the front through a six-speed automatic with overdrive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available on the eight-inch touchscreen out of the box, as were forward collision warning, rear camera, and tons of airbags for all occupants. Overall, not a bad deal for those wanted the latest tech and safety without spending a lot for it.
Building upon the LX, the S provides niceties such as a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, with a six-way unit for the front passenger. This is also where the eight-inch touchscreen gains Sirius XM with a subscription. An optional panoramic sunroof opens up the 2019 Kia Optima to natural light.
The EX loses the 2.4-liter I4 for a 1.6-liter turbo-four. Though horsepower falls to 178, torque jumps to 195 lb.-ft., which all goes through a seven-speed dual-clutch with overdrive. The front buckets gain heating for the colder days and nights, with optional ventilation when the heat outside is on. The EX Premium Package adds an two-position memory for the driver’s seat and mirrors, 10-speaker Harmon/Kardon sound system, while Option Group 032 upgrades the leather seat trim to two-tone leather seating.
Finally, the top-tier SX trim level bring all the luxury and performance to the table. Here, the 2.0-liter turbo-four turns up the power to 245 horses and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, though they go through the six-speed automatic instead of the seven-speed dual-clutch. On the luxury side, 12-way power-adjustable driver and 10-way passenger buckets come standard with heating and ventilation, while the panoramic sunroof included a power sunshade. The only options at this level were 18-inch Dark Satin Finish alloy wheels, rear side window shades, and heated rear outboard seats.
Used 2019 Kia Optima Prices Range from $20,548 to $29,437
Based on Kelley Blue Book’s Used Fair Market Range, a bare-bones LX with 60,000 miles can be had for a KBB Purchase Price of $20,548. The turbo-charged EX trim with the Premium Package and other niceties tops out at $29,863, and the top-tier SX with everything should go for no more than $29,437 on the lot.
In June 2021, the new owner of a pre-owned 2019 Kia Optima owner posted a Vehicle History review and had nothing but positive things to say about buying used. “I have not had any issues with my car,” reports Hannah K. “I bought it used in March, and I have loved it ever since. …The gas mileage is helpful when traveling. And around town my car still gets great gas mileage, around 24 miles to the gallon, which makes it very helpful when having to drive to work every day.”
CPO Options for the 2019 Kia Optima
Kia’s Certified Pre-Owned program puts every Kia model through a 165-point inspection before going up through sale. All CPO Kias include 24-hour roadside assistance, and each one comes with a Carfax report to ferret out any potential issues that could clash with the inspection process.
2019 Kia Optima Comes with Three Available Engine Options: Naturally Aspirated 2.4L I4, Turbocharged 1.6L I4, or Turbocharged 2.0L I4
Depending on the trim level selected, the 2019 Kia Optima can have one of three engines available, including two turbocharged choices for the two higher trim levels. Two transmissions linked the I4s to the front: a six-speed automatic, or the EX-only seven-speed dual-clutch.
2.4L NA I4 is Fine Enough for the LX and S
The sole engine available to the LX and S trims, the 2.4L naturally aspirated inline-four made 185 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. A standard six-speed automatic guided the power to the front wheels.
1.6L Turbo-Four Means More Torque, but Less Power
Available only on the EX, the 1.6-liter turbo-four’s 178 horses seems a bit disappointing compared to the bigger, air-breathing 2.4-liter I4. On the other hand, 195 lb.-ft. of torque may be enough to rock anyone’s world at the green light. Either way, the power reaches the road through a seven-speed dual clutch.
2.0L Turbo-Four Delivers the Goods Over the Rest
Placed strictly within the confines of the SX Optima, the 2.0-liter turbo-four turned up the heat to the tune of 245 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, all sent to the front through a six-speed automatic.
2019 Kia Optima Politely Sips its Cup of Gas
As far as midsize sedans and fuel economy go, the 2019 Kia Optima can hold its own among the competition. The most efficient model is the 1.6-liter turbo-four, while the 2.0-liter turbo-four doesn’t do as well, especially compared to the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated I4.
EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2019 Kia Optima range from 27 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway for the 1.6-liter turbo-four with the seven-speed dual-clutch, to 21 mpg around town and 30 on the open road for the 2.0-liter turbo-four.
The 2019 Kia Optima could also be had as either a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, rolling by gas stations at 40 mpg combined for the hybrid, or a whopping 103 MPGe for the PHEV. Both models, though, are considered separate from the rest of the Optima lineup by Kia.
Did On-track Performance Translate to the Street?
For a time in the mid-2010s, the Kia Optima competed in the Pirelli World Challenge in the GTS class. That ride delivered 368 horses and 300 lb.-ft. of torque to the front through a six-speed sequential, according to Road & Track back in 2014.
To say this performance didn’t translate to the street would be an understatement. Still, the 2019 Kia Optima does okay getting off the line from the green light, reaching 60 mph in around 6.8 seconds with all engines. Car and Driver found the base 2.4-liter I4 “quick but sometimes slow to react to inputs and sounds a little rough when coaxed into its upper ranges.” The magazine added the best engine of the trio was the 1.6-liter turbo-four, which, with its seven-speed dual-clutch, was “smoother, sharper, and quicker.”
How Much Can a 2019 Kia Optima Hold?
No matter which trim level is chosen, the cargo space is the same for the 2019 Kia Optima at 15.9 cubic feet. The 60/40 split rear bench folds down for maximum carrying capacity.
Regarding head and legroom, the front occupants have it best with 39.8 inches of headroom, 45.5 inches of legroom. The rear occupants lose a couple of inches up top due to the sloping roofline, but truly get it bad with 35.6 inches of legroom.
2019 Kia Optima Protects You Safely
Several safety features offered as options for the 2018 Kia Optima became standard for the 2019 model year. These include forward collision warning, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. Adaptive headlights and adaptive cruise control were available on most trims.
The NHTSA gave the 2019 Kia Optima a full overall five-star rating. The IIHS also loved the Optima’s optimal safety features, awarding it their 2019 Top Safety Pick+. However, the award applies to only the SX and its LED projector bulbs.
With the 2019 Kia Optima, You Can Have the Latest Tech Without Spending Too Much
From the base LX to the top-tier SX, every 2019 Kia Optima came with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto out of the box. Those wanting more stations to enjoy, though, needed to step up to at least the S to obtain Sirius XM, if not the EX, which added HD Radio as an option. Six speakers came standard on most trims, while the SX received a Harmon/Kardon 10-speaker unit as its standard. Rear occupants in the EX and SX were also able to charge their phones through a power outlet and USB charging port.
2019 Kia Optima’s Subdued Palette Pops With Sangria, Horizon Blue, and Passion Red
The 2019 Kia Optima boasted a combined total of eight shades for the exterior, though not all were available on all trims. The colors in question included: Ebony Black, Horizon Blue, Platinum Graphite, Sangria, Snow White Pearl, Sparkling Silver, Titanium Silver, and Passion Red.
Meanwhile, the interior scheme ranged from black or brown cloth for the LX, all the way to black, bronze or aubergine Nappa leather with the SX Limited packages. Black, gray and red leather were also available options, as well as sport black cloth fabric.
Will the 2019 Kia Optima Leave You Stranded and Broke?
Repair Pal gives the 2019 Kia Optima an average annual repair cost of $471, plus a rating of four out of five stars. The guide ranks the Optima eighth out of 24 midsize sedans for the 2019 model year, nothing that “major repairs are uncommon” due to the low frequency of such issues coming up.
Recalls, Issues, & Problems
The 2019 Kia Optima is affected by one recall from the NHTSA. The recall concerns the forward collision warning on certain turbocharged models (both the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter engines), where the brake assist may not engage when the warning detects a stationary vehicle.
Kia’s solution is a free software update. Total affected vehicles number 11,423.
The NHTSA received 33 complaints about the 2019 Kia Optima, the biggest number (11) falling into the “unknown or other” pile. More specific responses include seven for the electrical system, six for service brakes, and five for the engine.
2019 Kia Optima Competitors
The midsize sedan marketplace is an ever-shrinking battlefield amid the truck/crossover revolution. Still, the fighting is intense, and the 2019 Kia Optima must fight for its share of territory. Based on Vehicle History owner reviews, the Optima is rated 4.5 out of five stars, placing it seventh out of 11 2019 midsizers.
Above the 2019 Kia Optima are the two most common sedans in the bunch, the Toyota Camry (third place) and Honda Accord (fourth place). Both midsize sedans are known for their reliability and durability, though the Camry is the only one with a V6. At the top of the list, however, is the Subaru Legacy, which earned the Vehicle History Owner’s Choice 2019 honor for its all-wheel drive, extensive features list, and excellent value overall.
Is the 2019 Kia Optima the Right Midsize Sedan For You?
The 2019 Kia Optima is a fine example of the fourth-generation sedan. It may not have a V6 like the Toyota Camry or all-wheel drive like the Subaru Legacy, but it’s an overall solid midsize sedan with enough style to give anyone the right to look back more than once. And with the smaller turbo-four with the seven-speed dual-clutch on the EX trim, the ride will be just right.
