With zero recalls and just around 90 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration complaints, the 2019 Sorento seems to be a reliable midsize SUV that packs plenty of comfort and safety. Still, there are a few issues to consider, including malfunctioning power windows and faulty headlights.

Key Points

  • The 2019 Kia Sorento has no recalls but around 90 owner complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • Several owners mention powertrain-related issues such as hesitation, jerking, and engine stall.
  • One of the most common causes of complaints about the 2019 Sorento is its electrical failures, including internal wiring burning, malfunctioning power windows, and faulty headlights.
  • Although not as common, some owners have complained of power steering problems such as stiff steering, or the cruise control causing the vehicle to surge or rev higher.
  • The 2019 Kia Sorento holds a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and a perfect five-star rating with the NHTSA.

Powertrain Issues Lead the NHTSA Complaints, With the Biggest Concern Over the Transmission Surging and Jerking

There are two available powertrains in the 2019 Kia Sorento: a 185-horsepower four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and a 290-horsepower V6 that is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2019 Sorento has just around 90 complaints registered with the NHTSA. About half of them are for powertrain problems, specifically engine and transmission issues.

The key concern is over the transmission hesitating, jerking, and surging, not allowing the driver to maintain consistent speed and acceleration.

On this thread from Kia Forums, owners discuss the Sorento’s jerky transmission, with one owner mentioning Kia has issued a software update for the eight-speed transmission that seems to have solved the problem.

Several drivers have reported that these problems have happened during acceleration at low speeds and gears and are more pronounced when the vehicle is cold.

2019 Kia Sorento Engine Issues Include Stalling, High Rpms, and Rough Idle

The 2019 Kia Sorento registers owner complaints over engine-related problems such as loss of power, stalling, the engine failing, high rpms, and rough idle.

Also, several consumer complaints registered with the NHTSA mention the car lurching forward, engine knocking, and the vehicle shaking under various driving conditions.

Additionally, drivers report engine noise when starting the vehicle, especially in cold weather areas.

Several owners claim that Kia dealerships couldn’t replicate or identify these issues. Therefore, some owners repeatedly experience the engine failure symptoms. One owner said, “The car lost power while driving, and a semi-truck almost ran into me. I took the car to the Kia dealership, and they replaced the throttle body. A week later, the same problem.”

There are also reports of engine misfires or the vehicle stumbling through the low gears during acceleration until reaching 45-50 mph.

Reports of Faulty Electricals are Among the Most Common Complaints by 2019 Kia Sorento Owners

Problems with the electrical system and exterior lighting are mentioned in a quarter of the nearly 90 owner complaints registered with the NHTSA. One of the most common relates to the factory design of the low beam headlights causing a dark shadow-line across the field of vision and resulting in poor visibility.

Other reports point to internal wiring burning, knock sensor failing, malfunctioning power windows and steering wheel buttons, and loss of all electrical power, preventing the car from operating.

Flawed Vehicle Speed Control and Steering Add to the Sorento’s List of Problems

Another frequently cited problem with the 2019 Kia Sorento is the vehicle speed control causing the car to surge, jerk, and hesitate. In some instances, the surging would cause the front tires to spin.

Owners claim that the car would stall or jump without warning when the vehicle control is set, and the rpms would rapidly increase.

The Car Complaints website registers several reports of vehicle speed control problems in the 2019 Sorento, with one owner claiming he experienced some of these problems as early as 45 miles.

Regarding steering issues, owner complaints suggest the 2019 Sorento can experience problems as early as 10,000 miles.

Problems include a stiff steering wheel, the auto lane correction warning light constantly illuminated, the vehicle swaying or the steering wheel failing completely.

Kia’s 2019 Sorento is a Compelling Option in the Compact SUV Segment

The 2019 Kia Sorento has been a solid and mostly dependable vehicle despite some reliability issues that raised safety concerns.

The Sorento’s 2019 model year holds a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and a perfect five-star rating with the NHTSA.

In addition, Kia’s market-leading 10-year/100,000-mile warranty can address the most significant problems described in this article.

This warranty covers manufacturer damage or defects in all the vehicle’s essential systems, including the transmission and engine, which gives potential buyers the confidence to get a used Sorento over comparable SUV models.

Lost power in reverse on a hill at a school carpark
Parked car in a slight hill in a car park space, Let kids out the car & said bye bye. Got back in the car and started. Put aromatic 2019 Sorento in reverse and manoeuvred outwards. I break…… The car shuts off. Would not steer and no breaks working. Breaks went to the floor completely. Sh** my pants …. Rolling car and kids everywhere. Smashed in to another car. Luckily not a child or parent. I’m devastated. Shuck up completely and scared of the car. Took it to Dealer say no fault showing but you need x y z. Been good though and want to help and provided a car while they look into it. Gone to school asked for CTV and headmaster said it shows me at first breaking. The engine shut off and the car wouldn’t stop. It must have stalled in reverse which is dangerous. Automatic cars should not stall in reverse. Image being on the edge of a cliff and the car not stopping - kia needs to recall these cars as a matter of urgency

Only starts in neutral!!
I'm have a 2019 Sorento SXL, purchased brand new, and sometimes my vehicle won't start. It has 60K miles on it and I have replaced most headlights, new car battery, tires and batteries for both key fobs. Took it to the dealership and nobody can tell me why it hesitates to start in park, but starts up when in neutral. This is not a normal way to start a vehicle that cost 45k, and a little over 3 yrs old with routine service up to date. The problems started as soon as it hit 50k miles. This is my 3rd Kia, I usually trade them in around 2 yrs old, but because of the chip issues I had to wait. Makes me wonder if at 50-55k things start falling apart on these vehicles. Ready to trade it in!!

GPS system returns wrong location--by hundreds of miles
Whatever system in the car works with Android Auto doesn't work. If I use my phone's navigation--unconnected to the car--I have no problems. Once I plug into Android Auto, it reports my car's location as hundreds of miles away. For example, in Denver, Colorado, it first reported me as being in Verden, Oklahoma. A year later, after a road trip (not even close to the location it now reports), my location is set at Sonora, Mexico. There have been several other locations in between, all incorrect by at least a few hundred miles. Kia has offered no solutions or help. Yeah, it's a first-world problem, but definitely an issue that makes travel navigation a challenge.

I like it so far, I also get it sprayed at krown rust. With the electronic anti rust device thing if it protects the fusebox alone and the wires, it's worth it to me.
I have this suv the 4 cylinderversion... It has a lifetime warranty on the engine because of a defect/lawsuit and a sensor the dealership installed to detect engine knock and put it in low powermode if needed. So far the starter was replaced for free under warranty, although at not even 100,000km. Makes me wonder how I will be treated if and when the engine breaks. But presumably, I have nothing to worry about... Fingers crossed LOL. They should just give me the 2020 model :D I just wonder if I should change the transmission fluid they recommend I think 100, 000 miles, I should check the manual though. That and maybe get the coolant changed at 100,000 km?

Very reliable vehicle
We bought our 2019 Kia Sorento EX AWD V6 brand new on July 20, 2019. After 3 1/2 years of ownership we are very pleased. It has been very reliable. We had one issue with the driver's side door sensor where the radio would not shut off after exiting the vehicle. Dealership fixed it no problem. Otherwise the SUV has been flawless. We currently have almost 44,000 miles on it. V6 has plenty of power. I'm 6 ' 7 " & I fit in this vehicle. Plenty of room for a family of 4 & a 85 lb German Shepherd. 🙂 The 3rd row is good for occasionally picking up the kid's friends or extra grocery space. I hope to keep this car for 10 - 15 years.

Automatic car stalling . Rolling and crashed into cars
I’m in utter shock !! I was at the school dropping off on Tuesday and parked on the hill. Let kids out the car said bye bye. Got back in the car and started. Put aromatic in reverse and manoeuvred outwards. The car shut off. Would not steer and no breaks. Breaks went to the floor completely. s**t my pants …. Rolling car and kids everywhere. Smashed 2 cars. I’m devastated. Shuck up completely and scared of the car. Took it to Perry’s say no fault showing but you need x y z. Gone to school got CTV and I was breaking and the car didn’t stop !! The car stalled. Make sure your car is safe I’m bloody shocked

Constant problems
I had a 2019 Kia Sorento I purchased as a new vehicle. Within 30k miles, the alternator went bad. I was unable to get it fixed under warranty through Kia because they weren’t fixing any vehicles that weren’t on the recall list. The same thing happened 40k mikes later. I had an incident where my brakes malfunctioned. Thankfully I was able to avoid a collision. There was a different issue with the LCD screen every day. I had to reset constantly. The buttons on the steering wheel worked when they wanted to. It started to be very loud and shaky while idling. Kia as a company have to be the worst!

Hesitating on acceleration 3.3 V6
This seems to be extremely sluggish on throttle response and or the tranny when you leave a rolling stop or slow speed acceleration you have to keep pushing the throttle and it still acts like your not giving it any throttle or you have to jam it like your in a race to get response. Very frustrating when in town. Dealer says nothing wrong. Really?

Kia Sorento-good car, but not worth it.
I currently lease my Sorento and for the price I was very upset when cooling started pouring out of my vehicle. I have had it about a year and a half and the radiator blew. All in all, I do not think I am going to lease another Kia. When I leased my Sportage, the engines transmission wouldn't switch gears.

Kia Sorento 4 cyl- no power.
This SUV has does not have much power ( pick-up) it also makes a loud running noise while is driving. I returned to the dealer multiple times and the problem seems to be across the board on Kia's. I am very unsatisfied with my choice of vehicle and would opt for a v6.
accountCircle Michael A on March 12, 2022
Surprising luxury for the price.
Problems. There is a shaking that occurs while on the highway. It rattles the passenger seat if nobody is in it. The rear hatch only self opens partially up then you have to manually push it up another 4-5 inches yourself. It is comfortable even on long rides.

Severe wind noice & poor insulation
On highway speed there is continuous whistling wind noise from back windows or panoramic sun roof. Extremely annoying. Cold weather insulation is not adequate for Michigan weather. Can't download addresses thru Android auto app. Rest is good.

Smoke coming out of the hood
I recently had a harrowing experience with my 2019 Kia Sorento. While driving, the radio began turning on and off on its own and smoke started emanating from the hood. Eventually, the car came to a complete stop in the middle of the street.

Very roomy but now power and transmission is slipping.
Kia Sorento has no power. The vehicle was purchased new 5 months ago and the transmission is already slipping. For the price of the vehicle, it is very plain. Sound system in the Kia Sorento is terrible.

Problem with breaks squeaking and gas smells
The car has less than 3000 miles and the breaks are squeaking. I has noticed gas smells and the mileage is horrible. It's a great looking car but I am worried if maybe we have purchased a lemon.
accountCircle Nichole S on December 6, 2021
The fully loaded option is nice for the vehicle.
The car jerks a lot. Brakes are really sensitive. This vehicle is bad on gas. I have to go to the gas station at least 4 times a week.

Hesitating on acceleration V6
Agree totally on the acceleration problem...was told by the dealership that it was a feature not a fault. Seriously?!!
accountCircle Sara C on September 30, 2021
My vehicle is comfortable and very spacious.
The acceleration on this vehicle from 0-30 mph is very delayed, the car constantly feels like it is being overworked.
