Firmly in the 11th generation, the 2016 Corolla offers everything anyone could want in a Toyota. Its small footprint, capable powertrain, and high-tech systems never fail to impress, after all. But the real magic is in its sturdy build and dependable performance. When you add this car to your lineup, you can trust that it will get you to all your destinations without a hiccup along the way.

Although reliability is the name of the game, it is still prone to recalls, but that’s not actually a bad thing. Each of these notices helps you and your trusted technicians keep the vehicle in great condition mile after mile. And knowing about the issues helps keep you and your passengers safe on all your travels.

When looking to add this compact car to your life, checking out the recalls can help you decide if it can live up to your expectations. To assist in that endeavor, here’s a peek at the recall notice released for the 2016 Toyota Corolla.

Toyota Corolla Airbag Recall

Unsurprisingly, the 2016 Corolla only has one recall on the books at this time. That does not mean that other recalls won’t come to light later as Toyota learns about defects in its build. But for now, the only one you need to be aware of is recall number 20V024000, which addresses a potentially faulty airbag electronic control unit.

Under normal use, the electronic control unit could malfunction and disable the seat belt pretensioners and the airbags. If the module stops working and a crash occurs, those safety devices will not work as intended. This could leave you and your passengers vulnerable to the impact, potentially resulting in serious injuries.

To fix the problem, you have to bring your car in to the dealership to have a tech inspect the control unit and related parts. They will check to see if your unit is faulty and possibly install a noise filter. This filter goes between the wiring harness and module to block interference and keep the unit operational. You can then trust that your seat belt pretensioners and airbags will all work as intended.

This recall rolled out on January 17th, 2020 for the 2011 to 2019 Corolla across all trim levels. Also affected by the defect are the 2011 to 2013 Matrix, 2013 to 2018 Avalon Hybrid, and the 2012 to 2018 Avalon. The first set of notices went out in early March 2020 with a second set following in June.

How to Handle 2016 Corolla Recalls

If you have a 2016 Toyota Corolla already in your stable, then just give customer service a call at 1-888-270-9371 to discuss this recall. You can reference recall numbers 20TB03, 20TA03, and 20TA05 when you call to find out how to get the repairs performed. They will likely send you over to a nearby authorized dealership for an appointment. At that visit, the tech will take care of this relatively simple repair right away to help make sure you can stay safe on your drives.

If you are just looking to buy a Corolla, then don’t stop at recall research as you weigh your options. Go one step further with a VIN check through Vehicle History to learn all about each car you are considering. Your check will reveal if the vehicle in question has been in any accidents, comes with a clear title, and much more.

Once you decide to buy a Corolla of any model year, continue to keep watch for Toyota recall notices and respond right away to get the work done by a skilled tech. Your efforts will help keep your vehicle in great condition and ensure it is safe to drive.
