Ford introduced the Escape in 2001 to give drivers a capable and dependable five-door sport utility vehicle. It’s now one of the most popular compact SUVs in its segment. However, even the best models end up with recalls.

How many recalls have been issued for the 2011 Ford Escape?

As of September 2020, only 3. These include:

  • Incorrect wheel bearings
  • A faulty fuel delivery module
  • Electric power steering assist failure

Thankfully, in this article, we’ll cover each of these 2011 Escape recalls in detail, including how to handle them free-of-charge.

Use of Incorrect Wheel Bearings

NHTSA Recall ID: 15E045000

With the right wheel bearings installed, your wheels and tires can rotate smoothly and without binding up. Each car needs specifically sized bearings, each having different bores, widths, and outer dimensions.

During repairs on the 2011 Ford Escape, techs may have used Timken bearings, which were manufactured in the wrong size for this vehicle application.

Upon noticing this problem, Timken issued a recall to prevent damage to the hub assembly and adjacent parts. Their proposed fix includes the replacement of the bearings with the right ones for the vehicle.

Faulty Fuel Delivery Module

The fuel delivery module serves as both a level sensor and an in-tank fuel pump. The fuel travels through the port, down the line to the primary pump, and then through the injection system.

On Ford Escapes equipped with the 3.0L engine, the fuel supply port could crack, causing gas to leak out. This could either stall the engine and cause an accident to occur, or even start a fire.

The fix? Techs just have to replace the flange on the fuel delivery module. The new flange has a redesigned supply port that is not prone to breaking or cracking apart.

They will then test the output of the module to make sure it is working correctly before returning the car to you.

Electric Power Steering Assist Failure

NHTSA Recall ID: 14V284000

Electric power steering assist systems make it way easier to maneuver your vehicle, especially at low speeds. They work using a steering torque sensor that detects your input and sends information to the power steering control module.

On the 2011 Escape, the sensor does not correctly evaluate your effort as you turn the wheel, sending incorrect info to the control module.

As a result, the electric power steering assist system may not kick on, making it that you have to put in much more effort to turn the wheel. If you are not ready for that change, it could cause you to turn the wheel less than you need to and cause a collision.

Technicians can remedy the issue by updating the power steering control module software.

They may also update the instrument cluster module and check the torque sensor signal, replacing it if a problem is found.

Where Do You Handle a 2011 Escape Recall?

Whenever a recall comes out, Ford sends out notices to let owners know that their vehicle needs repairs. However, these notices do not always land on the right doorsteps, leaving some owners in the dark.

To see if your Escape was included in any of the above recalls, use the Recalls and Field Service Actions tool from Ford to search for your car using its VIN. If any recalls are needed, call the Ford customer service team at 1-866-436-7332
