For decades, Dodge has built a reputation for building high-quality, reliable vehicles, and the Dodge Grand Caravan has been one of their best models. With that said, though, there have been several recalls for the Grand Caravan over the years that are worth looking into before you purchase this model.

How many airbag recalls does the Dodge Grand Caravan have?

As of August 2020, there have been a total of four recalls for the Dodge Grand Caravan concerning issues with the airbags. Some of which include:

  • Inadvertent airbag deployment due to a chafed wire
  • Potential projectiles during an airbag deployment
  • An airbag that fails to deploy or does not deploy properly

Fortunately, we will cover each of the four recalls regarding the Dodge Grand Caravan‘s airbags in detail.

Brand Emblem and Securing Nuts May be Projectiles During Airbag Deployment

NHTSA Recall ID: 20V396000

In July of 2020, Dodge issued a recall on certain 2008–2010 Dodge Grand Caravan models, citing a loose or missing brand emblem in the center of the steering wheel.

If the driver’s airbag is deployed, the loose emblem and/or the securing nuts may become projectiles, creating a serious safety hazard.

To repair this issue, Dodge has offered to replace the airbag cover with a redesigned cover free of charge on all affected models.

Inadvertent Airbag Deployment Due to a Chafed Wire

NHTSA Recall ID: 17V376000

In June of 2017, Dodge issued a recall for some 2011–2012 Grand Caravan models regarding a driver’s front airbag that may deploy unexpectedly. This can happen if the airbag wiring harness gets chafed within the steering wheel and short circuits.

An airbag that deploys unexpectedly has the potential to cause serious injury by itself as well as cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle if the airbag deploys while the vehicle is in operation.

To repair this issue, Dodge has offered to replace the airbag wiring free of charge on all affected models.

Airbag May not Deploy Properly in a Crash

NHTSA Recall ID: 13V291000

Car Side Airbag

In July of 2013, Dodge issued a recall on some 2013 Grand Caravan models, citing a problem within the occupant restraint control module’s software. This issue may cause the airbags to not deploy or to deploy incorrectly in a crash.

If the vehicle’s airbags do not deploy in the manner they’ve been designed to deploy, they will not adequately protect the vehicle’s occupants.

To repair this issue, Dodge has offered to replace the occupant restraint control module free of charge on all affected models.

Side Airbags May Deploy on the Wrong Side

NHTSA Recall ID:  13V283000

In July of 2013, Dodge issued a recall for some 2013 Grand Caravan models concerning a software issue that may cause the side airbags to deploy on the wrong side during a side-impact collision.

To repair this issue, Dodge has offered to update the software in the occupant restraint control module free of charge on all affected models.
