What problems are most commonly reported with the Ford 5.4L motor?

Based on NHTSA complaints and VehicleHistory.com reviews, frequent issues include:

  • Spark plug problems
  • Engine vibrations and shaking
  • Fuel pump failure

For your reference, we’ve covered each of these common complaints about the Ford 5.4L engine below, as well as some possible explanations and repairs for each issue. This information can help inform your purchase of a Ford F-150, Expedition, or other Ford model equipped with this popular engine!

More about the Ford 5.4L Motor

Ford’s 5.4L V8 engine (also known as the Triton engine) was introduced in 1997 as an optional engine on the 1997 F-Series line of pickup trucks. The 5.4L Triton engine was marketed under this name through the 2010 model year, when it was replaced by the even more powerful 5.8L Trinity V8.

In addition to being offered on the Ford F-Series (including the popular F-150), the 5.4L V8 engine could also be found on some Ford Expedition, E-Series, and Lincoln Navigator models.

Common Problems With the Ford 5.4L Motor

2004 Ford F-150: Spark Plug Problems

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11209100, 10991722

Unfortunately, there have been some commonly reported issues with Ford’s 5.4L V8 engine over the years. One of the most common complaints is with this engine configuration having problems with its spark plugs in certain Ford F-150 trucks, including the 2004 F-150.

In one NHTSA complaint filed in 2019, the owner of a 2004 F-150 reports that the vehicle’s engine stalled while driving. Upon taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic, the problem was diagnosed as a spark plug issue. However, the mechanic commented that the spark plugs for this engine are notorious for failing.

In another NHTSA complaint, a 2004 F-150 owner maintains that one of the engine’s spark plugs “popped out” while driving at freeway speeds. Upon taking the truck to a Ford dealer for repair, another spark plug unexpectedly popped out while mechanics were working on the vehicle.

These complaints line up with multiple VehicleHistory.com reviews that mention issues with spark plugs blowing out or even getting stuck in place.

2005 Ford Expedition: Engine Vibrations and Shaking

NHTSA Complaint ID: 10948179, 11269009

The 2005 Ford Expedition, which was available with Ford’s 5.4L V8 engine, also had some issues with reported front-end vibrations and shaking. One owner filed an NHTSA complaint in 2017, stating that the vehicle vibrates severely at highway speeds. Allegedly, “vibration is so bad, the vehicle rocks side-to-side while driving.”

Another 2005 Expedition owner reports that the engine makes a rattling noise while driving. However, neither complaint mentions whether these vehicles were diagnosed at a Ford service center. Common causes of engine vibration and shaking include worn spark plugs, loose hoses, and bad timing belts—so these are possible repairs to consider.

2006 Ford F-150: Fuel Pump Failure

NHTSA Complaint ID: 10948553, 10617765

Ford’s 5.4L V8 engine has also had some ongoing issues with its fuel pumps, particularly in the 2006 Ford F-150. One complaint on the NHTSA page was filed in 2017 and reports that the fuel pump control module became corroded, causing the engine on the truck to stall completely.

In another complaint filed with the NHTSA in 2014, the owner of a 2006 F-150 claims that the truck stalled and had to be towed to a dealer. Upon inspection, the dealer found that the fuel pump module had corroded and cracked. The owner speculates that this was caused by a poor design.

2003 Ford f-150 XLT supercrew
2003 Ford f-150 XLT supercrew, triton v8 5. 4l, auto tranny. Been an excellent and reliable truck. It is been of great use even though the box is only 5. 5’. I bought the truck new and have been the only owner. During that time, twice did a spark plug blow out of the cylinder. Having knowledge of vehicles, I was not alarmed and aware of the possibility of it happening. The triton v8’s are known to have this happen. But even still, it is a fairly easy repair and you are back in the road. Keep up with routine maintenance and it'll last you a long time as it has for me.

2002 F-150 does what I need it to do. Has spacious interior.
Problem I have had is with the 5. 4 triton. It has the aluminum heads so you can't torque the spark plugs very tight. They slowly loosen and eventually come out taking the threads with it. There are several kits to fix this problem cheapest I have found is 63 dollars per spark plug hole. Aside from that it has a nice ride and handles good in the conditions I drive in muddy, snow on gravel mining roads.

Grandmother
My grandson has a 2006 Ford F-150 with 5.4 Triton engine. He bought second hand; JUNK. He has had trouble from the day it left the sales lot. With vibrations, spark plus issues. He changed all spark plugs still problem persists. Now transmission problem. It just never ends. I wished he had done his homework before buying this junk. He's young and definitely learned his lesson.

2005 Ford F-150 is a good reliable every day truck.
The 5. 4 triton engine is infamous for the spark plugs breaking off on the first tune up. If you get a tune up before 100k it would probably be much easier. Pedals are adjustable, seat belt is attached to seat. A lot of cup holders. Plenty of room so you do not feel claustrophobic. Good reliable truck overall I think.

2004 F-150 V8 triton engine issues and more.
Problems with the 5. 4 l v8 triton engine, problems with transfer case, and problems with axle, the wheel bearings seem to constantly go out, the engine has a issue with ticking which does not pertain to my own vehicle as I have seen many people who also have the same ticking issue.

5.4 Triton
08 f150 5.4. I’m the second owner. Bought it with 66,000. Now has 180,000. No issues at all. I change the oil with ford semi synthetic motor oil every 4,000. Don’t have one complaint.
