Ford first began equipping its vehicles with its now-famous Ford SYNC computer — also known as Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Since then, there have been several recalls and complaints related to Fords APIM.
Have there been any Ford APIM recalls?
There have been several recalls and customer complaints for the APIM. These include:

Instrument Cluster May be Inoperative
NHTSA Recall ID: 15V406000
In June 2015, Ford issued a recall on certain 2014-2015 Ford escape and 2014-2015 Ford Transit models, citing a software incompatibility issue that may cause the vehicle’s instrument cluster to become inoperative and fail to provide the driver with important information.
To repair this issue, Ford has offered to update the instrument panel software free of charge on all affected models.
APIM Malfunction

In January 2020, a customer complaint was filed for the 2017 Ford Explorer, citing an issue with the vehicle’s APIM that caused the rear-traffic alert to malfunction as well as a number of the vehicle’s other features such as its navigation, radio, HVAC, and cruise control.

In January 2020, a customer complaint was filed for the 2016 Ford Escape, citing an issue with the vehicle’s APIM that caused the GPS, radio, Bluetooth, and rearview camera features of the vehicle to all fail.

In December 2017, a customer complaint was filed for the 2013 Ford F-150, citing an issue with the vehicle’s APIM that caused the vehicle’s HVAC system to malfunction.
How do You Handle an Open Recall on a Ford Vehicle?
If you own a Ford model or you are looking at buying one used and would like to see if there are any open recalls on the vehicle, you can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website and type in your vehicle’s VIN number. From there, the system will alert you if there are any open recalls on your specific model.
