Ford F-150 Door Latch Recalls: What To Know

Carmakers aim to produce safe, reliable vehicles. Still, some problems do not become evident until after they’ve already been sold. When this happens, they issue recalls.

Are there any door latch recalls on the Ford F-150?

Yes, there are some recalls related to the doors latching, including these recalls:

  • Doors may open while driving
  • Door may unlatch in a side impact collision

In this article, we’ll cover the recalls related to the Ford F-150 door latch. We will also discuss other customer complaints about the door latches and locks.

Doors May Open While Driving

NHTSA Recall ID: 17V652000

Ford recalled over 1.1 million vehicles for a problem with the door latches and locks. This includes the 2015 through 2017 Ford F-150 vehicles (along with others such as the F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks). In these vehicles, the doors have a bent or kinked actuation cable.

In some other cases, the door latches can freeze if water gets into the area where the latch is located. In either of these situations, the problem can lead to the doors opening while the vehicle is being driven.

The key concern here is that these vehicles’ drivers or passengers may believe the door locks are secure. Yet, even though they appear closed, the problem can cause the doors to open. This creates a risk of an injury.

Ford alerted owners to the problem in October of 2017. It then had dealerships inspect these vehicles for the door latch actuation cable location and condition. They repaired them as necessary. In addition, the dealership installed water shields over the door latches to minimize the risk of moisture buildup.

Door May Unlatch in a Side Impact Collision

NHTSA Recall ID: 17V33100

In this vehicle recall, Ford alerted owners about a problem related to the door latch in instances where a side impact collision occurs. This affected the same vehicles – 2015 to 2017 F-150 vehicles along with the other F-Series vehicles.

Only those that have black or body-colored exterior door handles that may have a chrome exterior door handle cover accessory kit purchased for them are affected.

In these vehicles, the accessory door handle covers may lead to the door unlatching in situations where there is a side-impact collision.

As a result of this problem with the latches, the vehicle failed to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 2016, “Door Locks and Door Retention Components.”

If these accessory components are in place, and there is a side-impact collision, the door may unlatch and open. This can cause the occupants to be an increased risk of an accident.

To fix this problem, Ford alerted owners of the concern. They then removed any accessory covers that were put into these vehicles (this was a separate add-on feature that was sold only at Ford dealers.)

They also refunded the purchase price for these items.

Customer Complaints about Ford F-150 Door Locks

There have been a number of additional customer complaints about the Ford F-150 doors not locking properly. One common concern, not mentioned in either of the recalls, relates to the automatic interior door locks failing to unlatch. Once these are in place, such as when the vehicle is in motion, a failure occurs that leads to a malfunction.

The occupants in more than one incident had to exit the vehicle using a window. The dealership in this situation had to replace the side latch assembly system. This required a full repair and replacement. It was not noted in any recalls.

How Do You Handle an Open Recall on a Ford F-150?

Door latches, locks, and linkage fall under some of the lesser common recalls. Yet, new recalls can happen at any time. That’s why it is important to stay up to date on all recalls by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

For owners of Ford F-150 vehicles, enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the truck into the NHTSA website. This will produce a list of any recalls related to that particular vehicle. It also lists any pending recalls that need to be serviced by Ford.

To find out how to do that, call Ford directly at 1-866-436-7332. They will tell you where and how to get the recalls serviced.

For those who are thinking about buying a Ford F-150 or others interested in recalls related to this vehicle, including the door latch, just enter the make, model, and year into the website. This will provide a list of applicable recalls.

All door locks will freeze and not open except for passenger door, again Ford engineers can't design a properly functioning door locking system for winter driving or engineer a proper fix for the problem, when some gets killed then perhaps they might give consider looking at the issue among all the other issues with Ford trucks, oh yes I almost forgot to mention my windshield washer does not work in cold weather, fluid will not flow through the line to the wind shield (I do have the right washer fluid) nothing like driving down the road behind another vehicle and having salt spray all over your wind shield and you can't see a thing ahead of you, I believe high school students could design and engineer a much better truck. I will never buy another Ford!! Hey Ford wake up!!

It's either frozen shut or latch is frozen open
I have a 2015 F150 and have had the recall done once and it never worked. Every winter the doors are either frozen shut or the latch is frozen open. I've taken to keeping a hair dryer on the front porch and leaving an extra half hour time to blow dry my latch so I can go to work in the morning. The only thing I've found that helps is spraying some winshield de-icer in my latch when I get home at night and sometimes it works. Also sometimes it works to lock the door then close it after and that maybe half the time. I just got rear ended by a bus so after I find out whether it's totaled or not, I may be buying a different make of truck for sure. I'm on an Island in Alaska with no dealer so having recalls fixed is problematic to say the least.

2017 Door Latch problem - NOT frozen
The door latch on my 2017 F150 XLT is not only an issue in the winter but now is an issue during a heat wave in the middle of July. The latch does not catch, the exact same symptom from the winter when it was supposedly frozen. This is a design flaw causing major safety concerns. When I contacted the dealer, they scheduled a diagnostic appointment which will cost me $150. My dealer is over an hour away so now I have to drive a truck with a driver door that may or may not latch for an hour to get it diagnosed. No mention by the dealer if they will actually apply a fix, just diagnostics. At this point, I am not certain I will ever purchase another Ford truck. Frustrated and angry.

Mr
I own a 2018 F150. I’ve had it into our dealer Corwin Ford every year since we’ve owned it. Never fixed. Every year when it gets cold it does it. Usually after running for 25-30 minutes it does latch. It seems that Ford does not have a fix for this situation. We have a business with 10 Ford light, medium and heavy duty trucks. It’s a shame that we will likely never purchase another Ford product over a stupid lock latch they simply refuse to fix.

2017 f150 recall did nothing
Had the recall work done and my 2017 f150 still has the same problem. The last time I took it in Ford said they would not pay for the problem and blamed it on the actuators. I will never ever buy a ford again. This is a safety issue and needs to be addressed. Very disappointing because my family rides in this vehicle and Ford refuses to address the issue. Something needs to be done!

Door latch
Ridiculous that every time it Gets cold I cannot close the door. So many complaints why is Ford not fixing the problem? The dealer replaced the door seals 2 days ago and said it should stop the problem and today I had the same problem trying to go to work. I had to hold the door closed going home one late night after work. This is so unsafe. I could barely hold it and drive.

Door Latch
I have had the door lock actuators on all four doors replaced twice. Most often a problem in sub freezing weather. Started the process to have them replaced a third time, and the dealer is advising that the door lock cables are also damaged and that their replacement is not covered under the recall. Good Grief! 2018 F-150 purchased in August of 2018 new. Only 52 months in.

I’vehad the freezing lock problem every winter. When it snows or the temperature gets below freezing the locks freeze up. Either the doors won’t unlock or if they do they won’t latch back. I’ve had my truck back at the dealership twice and they still haven’t fixed the problem. I don’t think they have a fix for the problem either.

F150 door latch fails
Anyone want to join in a lawsuit for the actual repair of this issue. I just drove over to our local Ford dealership and even with the door locked had it fly open twice. This is a danger to Ford F150 drivers and anyone driving near these vehicles. Maybe an endangerment lawsuit will get a resolution BEFORE someone had to lose a loved one.

Think twice about buying this vehicle Very Dangerous
If I could put half a star this is ridiculous Late to church work I literally have to let this truck heat up so prayerfully it would latch I deserve a refund portion period Corporate need to call owners open a window for us to to have this taken care of immediately, otherwise any unforeseen incidents should be FORDS RESPONSIBILITIES

2019 F-150 Door Latches
I am just learning of this problem. In sub-freezing temperatures, the only door that will unlock is my driver door. I didn’t experience this last winter. I bought this truck in the fall of 2021. On my son’s 2018 F-150, none of the doors will unlock. It’s currently at the dealership, so we’ll see what happens.

F150 door latches
Same thing everytime it starts freezing, The front and back door latches freeze shut or open, I have to drive holding the door shut or holding them shut with bungee cords, why can’t Ford get this problem fixed before someone is injured
accountCircle Chris Campbell on February 27, 2022
Never again
Ford is a piece of junk. Never again will I buy a Ford. The latch issue is a major problem and safety issue but they don’t do anything to fix it. Their customer service line is experiencing difficulties, not surprised.
