Ford F-150 Transmission Problems Worth Knowing Of

Picture an American truck in your head. You probably just imagined a Ford F-series. In particular, it was probably a Ford F-150. These are great trucks. Great trucks with a lot of transmission problems.

What are the problems you can expect with a Ford F-150‘s transmission?

Here are the big ones:

  • Truck may not accelerate
  • Harsh and delayed shifting
  • Truck runs rough and makes noise

Here’s what you need to know about the F-150’s transmission troubles.

A Look at the F-150’s Transmission

The F-150’s biggest transmission problems are in the 2017-2019 models with 10 speed 10R80 automatic transmission.

Among other problems, these transmissions are known for riding rough with loud clunky, banging noises coming from under the hood at under 10,000 miles, and gears being slow to shift.

The truck’s adaptive transmission shift explains a lot of these issues. The truck uses a module to adjust to the operator’s driving style.

Great idea, but this means that a truck with multiple drivers is going to have a lot of trouble adjusting between drivers.

3 Major Problems with Ford F150 Transmission

Truck May Not Accelerate

A number of F-150s have a tendency to not accelerate when you press the pedal. This has to do with the transmission shift linkage disconnecting. This can also result in the truck slipping into neutral when in motion or parked.

Thankfully, this probably usually won’t involve replacing the entire transmission, and there’s probably a recall in place to replace the shift linkage components. Just look up your VIN at NHTSA and find out.

Harsh and Delayed Shifting

Multiple drivers have reported that the truck may have a hard time shifting while accelerating or decelerating. This is bad enough, but it can be incredibly dangerous when merging or trying to avoid an accident.

In many instances, these issues can be fixed all at once by updating the adaptive learning software or having the module’s memory cleared by going into the scan tool and, well, this video can explain it a lot better than we can. You don’t even need to get your hands greasy.

Truck Runs Rough and Makes Noise

In many of the complaints regarding the F-150’s transmission, the concerns are less specific and more “The truck runs rough and makes a lot of clanking and banging noises.” This is, again, usually to do with the adaptive learning module.

This is another fix that can be handled by clearing or updating the software. Unfortunately, it can be hard to tell if this is a simple fix or a more serious problem, so you’ll want to try the software fix, and then see if you still have a noisy engine.

2022 F-150: 10-speed Transmission, under 7000 miles
I bought my first, brand-new Ford F-150 (SuperCrew Lariat - $67K) last year in early August. It's now in the shop for harsh shifting, slipping in-out of gears for the SECOND time. It's been over two weeks this time around and counting - not expected to get it back until mid-September). No loaner car available. This truck has under 7000 miles on it so far and I'm feeling duped. I've been reading up on the 10R80 transmission and apparently it has had problems since it was first introduced. I'm extremely disappointed that despite my research initially, this transmission is nothing but a metal hunk of problems. Avoid it for sure, but beyond THAT, AVOID FORD. I have bought 5 new vehicles in my life and NEVER have a experience such poor customer service. I'm filing a claim under the lemon law and once I'm out from under this truck, I'll avoid Ford like the plague.

Avoid ford, ford dealers and ford service
Ford knows very well the 10 speed auto in f150 250 broncos mustangs rangers explores and others have issues. They had issues when they left the factory. Fords customer service is the worst i have ever seen from the top down. They have zero car about you as a person, a customer, or even a legal concern. This is nothing new to american auto makers esp. Ford. Dig up the history and learn on your own. Ford has had more forced recalls, class action litigation, deaths from flaws, and cover ups than any other american automaker - including general motors- and gm is flippin terrible.

Not just computer problems
My 2020 F150 with 16,456 miles just went to the Ford shop. Mechanic says the transmission has "eaten" itself. Says new on order. Could be 8 weeks. Truck is grounded till work completed. Parts on indefinite back order. Under warranty and I have a small-paid for replacement-but I bought this truck for work...Now screwed. My Sale rep saw me as I was leaving Service.Asked if I wanted to buy a new 2023. I told him -yep! I new Ram or Silverado.....

Waiting on parts no end in sight
Same as above. Ford truck now over 2 months in shop with eta given as "Maybe the end of next month, unless it goes back on back order, then we dont know" No recourse except to keep driving a rental car. I bought this for towing a boat, so no boating for me....

Avoid the warranty
Get this, they have you pay for the warranty and when the transmission slips due to a faulty rig, they will not give you a rental UNTIL they can service it which is months out! My husbands a twice owned Ford truck guy… and both trucks were money pits.

2013 F150 100,00
Transmission not shifting 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th. Speedometer starts and stops. No Codes. Dealer's response is "Buy a new Transmission". Dealer states "cannot do anything else without codes." The truck is still in warranty.
