With the help of the Transit, Ford has held the title for the best-selling lineup of commercial vans for over 40 years. Let’s find out what makes it so handy.

The Ford Transit has been met with great success in the United Kingdom. It is so popular in fact, that transit has replaced the word “van” in their common language, similar to how Hoover replaced vacuum or band-aid has replaced adhesive bandages in the United States.

Naturally, this success was met with jealousy, in 2015 the Ford Transit was officially the most stolen vehicle in the U.K. However, the Transit has not only been on the receiving end of crime, in 1972, the Metropolitan police of London said that 95% of bank raids utilized a Ford Transit.

So, what makes Ford’s Transit so appealing that people can’t keep their hands off of them? As it turns out, space, performance, versatility, and intelligent design are just the start of the list. We go through the dimensions of each Transit to help you figure out which one best suits your needs.

Ford Transit’s Debut

Interestingly, the Transit got its start in the wake of World War II. Once economic boundaries were lifted after the war, Ford of Britain and Ford-Werke AG started competing once more.

Needless to say, due to the war there was no lack of tension between the two. In 1951, the German-ran Ford-Werke AG launched the FK series of commercial vehicles. The FK would compete with the Volkswagen Bus until 1961 when Ford pulled it due to quality control issues.

Meanwhile, Ford of Britain released the Thames 400E in 1957, a similarly sized van that consequently competed with the FK. This led to a conundrum for Ford as they were fighting each other in the salesroom.

In 1963, Ford headquarters in Detroit instructed the companies to work together on a commercial van. The codenamed Redcap-Project created in 1963 would create the brand-unified Transit for 1965. As a byproduct, Ford of Britain and Ford-Werke AG would merge to form Ford of Europe in 1967.

The first Transit was released in 1965. Not only did it offer massive cargo and cabin space, but it was also more customizable when compared to the competition. There were several configurations offered, from minibuses to pickup trucks, and of course vans.

The first generation received two massive facelifts in 1978 and 1984, until being replaced by the second generation in 1986. The second-generation Transit saw improved aerodynamics, though it remained rear-wheel drive.

In 2000, the American-designed third-generation Transit hit showrooms. Despite being designed in North America, it was never sold here. The new generation would offer front-wheel drive for the first time ever. It would receive a facelift in 2006 and hang around until it was replaced by the current fourth generation.

Fourth-generation Transit (2014-Present)

Interestingly, although the Transit was a product of Ford, it was never sold in North America until 2014. It replaced the long-running E-Series van as Ford’s commercial van. Differing from the E-Series, the Transit offers unibody construction that increased the payload by 600 lbs.

The new Transit was designed in a joint effort of Ford of Europe and Ford of North America. It came with larger loading bays and more configurations than the previous generations.

The Transit was offered in two different models, the smaller Connect and the full-size Transit. The smaller connect has a max towing capacity of 2,000 lbs and is offered as a cargo or passenger van with three different trims, being the XL, XLT, and Titanium. Whereas the larger Transit comes in four different variations being the Cargo, Crew, Passenger XL, and Passenger XLT.

Kicking off the inevitable refreshes, the Connect was revamped for the 2019 model year. In addition to styling changes, Ford made the 2.0L I4 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission standard and left the 2.5L I4 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as an option. The 2.5L I4 engine can be converted to run off of natural gas or propane instead of gasoline.

For 2020, Ford would end production of the short-wheelbase Connect, only offering the third-row seating variant.  Following suit, the Transit underwent a massive refresh for 2020. Exciting new standard features were added such as a WiFi hotspot, driving assists, and automatic high beams. The 3.5L V6 engine was made standard, replacing the 3.7L V6.

However, for those who want more power, the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine is still an option. The six-speed transmission was replaced with a ten-speed for both engines, and all-wheel drive is optional.

2022 Ford E-Transit - Photo by Ford

Finding the Right Transit for You

As you can see, with the many configurations of Transit, there is certainly one for every job. There are three main purposes for the Transit: hauling people, hauling cargo, and hauling a work crew. For carrying passengers, the smaller Transit Connect can haul seven. If you need even more room, check out the much larger Transit passenger van with seating up to 15.

For even more configurations, Ford will be releasing the all-electric E-Transit for 2022. The Transit’s admirable performance, cargo space, and versatility certainly make it less surprising that it is the best-selling commercial van in the United States (nearly doubling its closest competitor). Interestingly, the Transit started the trend of making work vans white.

Remember, the transit was born in a world without air-conditioning, so it makes sense why white was the color of choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Apr 15, 2022

What are the inside dimensions of a Ford Transit van?

The inside dimensions of a 2021 Ford Transit Van vary depending on the model and wheelbase that you choose. The one number that remains the same on all Transit Van models is the interior widths. The interior width is 70.3 inches, and it is 54.8 inches between the wheel arches.

The interior length of a Transit Van comes in three different versions to fit your needs. The first is 126", the second is 143.7", and the third is up to 172.2" long. This should be long enough to fit most of the cargo that you would need to haul in the back of the van and makes them a great work van for contractors.

The interior height of a Transit is either 59.6", 72" or 81.5" depending on the options that are selected as well. Typically if you are going to use the van as a mobile workshop it is good to get one that is 72" or 81.5" tall because it will allow you to walk around inside it more comfortably.

What is the difference between Ford Transit 150 250 and 350?

The Transit 150, 250, and 350 are very similar to each other and the only real difference is that they have different gross vehicle weight ratings. This is set by the springs that are located at the rear of the vehicle and as you increase in numbers you get a stronger spring for the back axle which allows you to carry more weight.

The engine that is in all three trims of the Transit Van is the same and the body options on them are also the same. Ford has been able to simply replace the rear springs on the vans and in doing that they can sell them as a new model. Some people buy the vans and swap the springs as needed depending on what they are hauling.

The Transit Van is a great option if you need to haul cargo, but it is a good idea to make sure that you get one with the right gross vehicle weight rating if you plan to use it as a commercial vehicle.

Which Ford transit is best for conversion?

If you are looking to turn a Ford Transit Van into a conversion van or camper then some are better for one or the other. If you want a conversion van that would be comfortable to ride around in, but not camp in then I would recommend going with the low roof and longest wheelbase and body length. This would give the most room for passengers in the back, while also being the most fuel-efficient.

If you want to turn a Transit into a camper van then I recommend getting the longest and tallest one that you can afford. Having the extra ceiling room is great in a camper van because it will allow you to move around freely and use appliances that you may add to it.

There are coach-building companies out there that take care of all of the conversion or camper labor if you do not want to do it yourself. They usually pick the right base vans and have the experience of modifying them to know which will work best for each situation.
