There aren’t many reasons one would find themselves reading an article about GMC leaf springs. Unless you’re one of many owners complaining of issues.

Are there any leaf spring recalls on GMC vehicles?

As of September 2020, no. That being said, many GMC owners have reported complaints regarding the leaf spring of their vehicle, including:

  • Leaf spring not safely secured to chassis
  • Leaf spring may fracture
  • Leaf spring may puncture the bed of the truck

Thankfully, this article will go over each of these issues in detail and explain what to do if you think your GMC vehicle may have a leaf spring issue.

Leaf Spring not Properly Secured

Many GMC truck owners have found that the leaf spring is not properly bolted to the chassis of the truck, creating an unsafe driving environment.

If this issue is ignored, it’s possible for the leaf spring to come loose, interfering with moving parts of the car and causing damage, while also increasing the likelihood of a crash.

If the leaf spring does not completely break loose but is not secured, it can affect the smooth ride of the vehicle, resulting in faster than normal wear and tear for other components of the vehicle.

Repairing this issue involves your mechanic or dealer inspecting where the leaf spring is attached to the vehicle and potentially tightening or replacing bolts.

Leaf Spring Fracture

In some GMC trucks, drivers have experienced a fractured leaf spring. This can result in an extremely noisy and bumpy ride.

If this issue is ignored, it’s possible for part of the leaf spring to break loose from the vehicle and interfere with moving parts, increasing the likelihood of a crash. A fractured leaf spring can also create a hazard for others on the road, resulting in accidents.

Repairing this issue involves inspection of the leaf spring, and replacement if it’s fractured or damaged.

Leaf Spring May Puncture Bed of Truck

It’s possible for a broken or damaged leaf spring to puncture the bed of a truck. While this can result in costly repairs, it’s also a sign that a piece of the leaf spring is likely to break off.

If this issue is ignored, the truck bed can become damaged. The damaged leaf spring may break off while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the likelihood of a crash and potentially harming others on the road.

Repairing this issue involves inspection and potential replacement of the leaf spring.
