Headlight issues are one of those things that you really shouldn’t ignore. Since you’ve found yourself reading this article, there’s likely something on your Honda Accord that needs your attention. Ignoring a headlight issue (as you may have guessed) can be a safety hazard.

Have there been any headlight recalls for the Honda Accord?

No, but some owners have mentioned some light-related problems, such as:

  • Daytime running lights in touring trim fail with less than 45,000 miles
  • LED inside headlight assembly melts plastic
  • Driver side DRL out at 30K miles, now passenger side out at 35K miles

Do you have a Honda Accord with a DRL that is out? For owners of the affected vehicles above, there is a solution available from Honda. Find out what needs to get done to have yours repaired.

Daytime Running Lights in Touring Trim Fail with Less Than 45,000 Miles

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11281123

Since the standard vehicle warranty is for three years or 36,000 miles, a 2016 or 2017 Honda Accord could easily be outside the warranty. Newer vehicles with modern headlamps have sealed assemblies that require the replacement of the entire unit, even to fix a daytime running lamp.

Owners were paying up to $1,500 to have a failed LED and headlight assembly replaced, when these lights are supposed to last for many years.

LED Inside Headlight Assembly Melts Plastic

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11040868

This owner noted the actual reason the DRLs are failing in the 2016 and 2017 Honda Accord. The LED lamp overheats due to a manufacturing problem which melts the plastic housing around the LED daytime running lamp light bar at the bottom of the assembly.

It has also been found to distort the lens of the LED. This causes the connection for the DRL to become loose, short out, and fail.

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11040813

This driver had his first DRL fail before the original vehicle warranty expired, but the second one died right at the end of the warranty and did not want to end up footing the bill. Multiple complaints were lodged with Honda and the NHTSA, resulting in a warranty extension.

On April 16, 2019, Honda released a formal warranty extension for the 2016 and 2017 Honda Accord and the 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid. The extension indicates that a certified Honda service center will replace any failed DRL at no cost to the owner for up to 10 years after the original purchase date.

This extension would include pre-owned vehicles, as long as the car was never totaled in an accident or suffered damage in an accident that affected the headlights. It takes a technician about an hour to replace one or both headlights.

Dim headlight on 2017 Honda sport
I can barely see at night driving my car. I have to use brights. On dim the lights are shining on the ground not shining ahead so I can see. This is gonna cause a tragedy one day if not corrected.
