Imagine you’re ready to hop into your Honda Insight or Accord only to discover your key fob’s not working. A dead Honda key fob can be an annoyance, but you can easily bring it back to life with a simple battery change.

What type of battery does my Honda key fob use?

Most Honda key fobs rely on a CR2032 button cell, a 3-volt circular battery, to power their remote functions. You can also find these batteries in small toys, wristwatches, and other small electronics.

We’ll show you the ropes for your Honda key fob battery replacement, as well as where you can get new batteries and how much they’ll cost.

Getting Batteries for your Honda Key Fob

CR2032 batteries aren’t hard to find. Nearly every major retailer will have them in their battery section or even at the register. Drug stores also carry CR2032 batteries along with other sizes for hearing aids and other medical devices.

Most hardware stores also carry CR2032 batteries. You’ll even find them in a few convenience stores, just in case you’re busy gassing up and need a replacement ASAP.

You won’t have to pay a pretty penny for CR2032 batteries, either. Single packs typically cost $2 to $3 apiece, while a six-pack may run you anywhere from $10 to $15 depending on the brand.

If the major brands are too rich for your wallet, you can always consider a cheaper generic alternative. Generic batteries tend to be half the cost of their name-brand counterparts, but expect their quality and longevity to vary.

Replacing Your Key Fob Battery

Most Honda key fobs are held together with a small screw, so you’ll need a jeweler’s screwdriver to remove it. Afterward, you can pry the key fob apart using a small flathead screwdriver. Make sure the contents don’t spill out as you pry it open.

Locate the battery on the key fob circuit board. Before you remove the battery, make a note of its orientation so you can install the new one the correct way. Remove the battery and check for signs of corrosion. You’ll need to clean this up before installing the new battery.

After checking the connections, install the new battery facing the correct way. Once the battery is in place, snap the two halves of the key fob back together and tighten the screw, if there was one present.

Don’t forget to test your Honda key fob afterward. If it doesn’t work, check the battery and make sure it’s installed correctly. Otherwise, you may need to replace the key fob itself.
