Honda Odyssey Problems Consist of Transmission Troubles, Braking Vibrations, and Fuel Pump Leaks and Failures

For more than 25 years, Honda’s Odyssey has been the reliable choice for minivans. However, the biggest complaints with several of its model years point to transmission troubles, brake issues, and fuel pump problems, which may cause serious damage and cost thousands to repair.

2018 Honda Odyssey-Honda

Key Points

  • Based on data from the NHTSA, the best years for Honda’s Odyssey minivan are 2013, 2015-17, or 2021 and newer.
  • Honda Odyssey’s 2010 model year was marked with recalls for failing fuel pumps as well as complaints about faulty rear sliding doors.
  • Odyssey minivans from 2011 and 2012 have complaints about strong vibrations while hard braking.
  • Newer Odyssey models from 2020-2022 have just nine recalls and 63 registered complaints combined.
  • The 2017 Odyssey was undoubtedly the best year with only one recall and 19 registered complaints.

Early Honda Odyssey Models Had Transmission and Fuel Pump Troubles, but by 2010, Registered Complaints Had Plummeted

It’s worth noting that even though the Honda Odyssey has a stellar record for reliability, older models (most notably the second generation) suffered from transmission woes. Car Complaints says the entire second generation should be avoided over the transmission issue.

Things took a turn for the better with the last two model years of the Odyssey’s third generation, 2009 and 2010, being met with markedly lower registered complaints. The NHTSA saw consumer complaints drop from 489 to 187 in 2009 and remain similarly low for 2010.

The most common problem surrounding 2010 Odyssey minivans is the functionality of the sliding rear doors. Customers complain of the automatic power sliding feature failing, the doors falling off their tracks, or outright not opening.

Other complaints align with the two open recalls for the model year, which both cite faulty fuel pumps. One recall addresses the potential of cracks forming on the fuel pump and causing fuel leaks as well as posing a fire risk. Customers have also reported a fuel smell in the cabin.

The other recall is over fuel pumps delivering false readings that may cause vehicles to sputter or stall due to the electronics not sending the proper amount of fuel to the engine. Combined, recalls concerning the fuel pump affect nearly 900,000 Odyssey minivans from 2005 to 2010.

Fourth-generation Odyssey Minivans Remain Consistently Reliable With Few Recalls or Complaints

The fourth-generation Odyssey was sold as a 2011 through 2017 model year. Recalls concerning the second-row seatbacks not staying in place during a collision permeate the entire generation, but compared to other years, complaints remained low.

The 2011 and 2012 Odysseys did see a spike in brake-related complaints in which drivers report noticeable vibrations during moderate to hard braking, which was the top reported problem for the model years.

The Odyssey’s best year on record remains the 2017 model, with only one recall and 19 registered complaints. The recall is for the second-row seats mentioned earlier, a problem for the entire generation, and the complaints were sporadic indicating no major flaws.

Honda Odyssey Models from 2018 and 2019 Struggle With Rocky Start, but 2021 and Newer Minivans Look to be Very Reliable

The current-generation Odyssey debuted as a 2018 model, with the first two years accumulating 22 recalls and 389 complaints. This isn’t too worrying in itself, but from a brand with Honda’s reliability record and coming off the most reliable year on record, the 2018 and 2019 models marked a rocky start for a new design.

Complaints about these models focused mainly on the electronic components of the vehicle, such as the gauges and infotainment options. Sporadic operation and failure were the themes with consumers unable to use some of the modern features, like reverse camera systems.

Newer models have fewer recalls and complaints with less time on the road, but it does appear that the 2021 and 2022 models have course-corrected with three recalls on file and just 28 complaints.

Typically a Safe Bet, the Honda Odyssey Has Had Some Troubling Years to Beware of When Shopping

Lauded as one of the best people-movers on the planet, and sharing Honda’s stellar reputation for reliability, it is hard to go wrong with a Honda Odyssey minivan. Check out Odyssey models from 2009 onward for the best experience.

Do your research, however, as there are some years to avoid in that timeframe. Generally, the first couple years of a generation have manufacturers working out minor defects or flaws in designs, which leaves 2011, 2012, 2018, and 2019 models on a list to watch out for.

Conversely, the 2017 model has the fewest recalls and complaints of any other model year by a large margin and earned Vehicle History’s Owner’s Choice Award, signifying it as the highest-ranked in its class by owners.

What are the Honda Odyssey’s Common Problems?

Early years of the Honda Odyssey, especially 2002 models, suffer from transmission failure, as well as 2003 and 2005 models, but defects were corrected in 2007. Recent recalls on 2018-2020 models are for faulty third-seat wiring that can ignite the vehicle.

What Problems Does the 2021 Honda Odyssey Have?

The 2021 Honda Odyssey is subject to one NHTSA recall for a faulty fuel tank that can overflow and nine complaints for engine and electrical problems. The 2021 Odyssey loses acceleration while driving or shuts off entirely and the forward collision avoidance can falsely engage.

Issues that dealer refuses to address
I have a 2019 and purchased it with 10k miles on it. (I believe it was a "loaner" for the dealership although they did not disclose that). About 6 months after I purchased it,it began to have issues with the infotainment center. The speakers would crack & pop while music was playing, I was on the phone, or even with nothing on. It then escalated to getting "system errors" and "check tuner" error and no sound would come out of the speakers. It would say that the audio was off even though it wasn't. I couldn't control the sound, or make phone calls. I was in and out of the dealership more times than I can count for this issue. They knew it was a problem but treated me so poorly as if I was making it up! Honda finally decided that they needed to replace some sort of wire and promised it would be the fix! It wasn't. I was in and out once again for all the same issues. Then they replaced a different part and said it would be the fix, no more issues! Nope. Still issues. I took videos and photos of the ALL the issues and sent them in. I still have the issues and they basically told me "oh well" they are done trying to fix it. Now I am having issues with my transmission stalling. I contacted them and they acknowledged that there's an issue and an "update" for it however, this update is not necessarily a fix. Today, I was driving and my van stalled while I was trying to make a left-hand turn while on-coming traffic.

My Honda Odyssey Is A Repair Nightmare
I’ve spent over 15,000 on repairs of this minivan, and that doesn’t include regular typical maintenance like new tires, new brakes, engine and cabin air filters, fluids, oil changes, etc. At 82,000 miles: replaced drive belts tensioner, timing belts, both driveshafts, bank 1 converter, gasket ex chamber and ex pipe, both rear shocks, both rear struts, & power steering pump At 96,000 miles: removed and replaced bank 2 catalytic converter and removed and replaced front rear and side engine mounts, and suspension. At 138,000 miles: replaced AC blower motor and replaced bank 1 and bank 2 catalytic converters

Electrical glitches
The passenger side power sliding door sometimes refuses to work, particularly if it is below freezing - but the problem is intermittent, hence the lack of a solution from the service people. There is also an intermittent audible alarm that goes off sometimes. It stays on until the brakes are applied and the vehicle stops - take your foot off the brake pedal and the alarm goes off again and stays on for the balance of the drive.

Constant Issues Needing To Be Fixed
So many issues -would not start 2 weeks after buying -radio spontaneously loses power -DVD in the back goes blank but the soundtrack to movie continues to play so you think the kids can actually see -sliding doors not adjust properly. Scraped down to bare metal had to be taken in for 2 weeks to paint -walk away locks only work if the driver is the last one to shut their door (so not after you unload kids)

Too many problems to count
We are so terribly disappointed to experience so many issues with it. It is obvious that this model was thrown together and testing wasn’t done to make sure standards were met. Two weeks after I bought the car, we experienced issues with the rear entertainment glitching. It took me six trips to the dealership and threatening my lawyer to get involved for them to finally address the issue.

A Lot Of Issues With My Honda Odyssey Before 145k Miles
The doors are falling off the tracks because the wiring mechanism is cutting through the bolt that holds them on. The brakes on the right side are always worn first due to multiple adjustments. The front and back right tires always need to be changed due to the brakes. I have had to replace the power steering pump. It gets terrible gas mileage. I only have 145, 000 miles on it

Engine Failure With No Explanation
The engine wouldn't start on the third day, so I had to tow it to the nearest dealer. It would crank, but would not turn over. Make sure you park the back end in first, because it's a front-wheel drive, so the towing company had to drag it out before they could hook up the front end. The dealership couldn't figure out the problem, but somehow they had the car running.

Buyer Remorse
After 6 months it rattles like a 20-year-old car, the heat/ac has an awful ringing sound that actually gives us all headaches, and now the touch screen freezes up, you can’t turn the radio off, change the station, volume, control the a/c, use the navigation... Just awful. Horrible transmission shifting, if you need to make a quick turn it chokes.

Electrical And Transmission Problems That Are A Hassle
The performance in this vehicle is terrible transmission changes gears very rough. The air conditioner runs hot when the car is sitting still, for example, if I am sitting in traffic. I have had several mechanical problems with this vehicle. The backup camera malfunctioned and stopped working because the cables were loose on a brand new car.

Continuous Issues With The Brakes
It seems nice and all but once you start actually using it there are brake problems. I wouldn't say this if this was the only car I have tried but this is the third one that I have and they've all done the same. Every time we have a problem we take it in and it is supposed to have been fixed or we get an upgrade and it is always the same.

Cons Of The Honda Odyssey
This vehicle has about 5 safety recalls. Although we have remedied all the recalls on our vehicle, we still have issues with the automatic sliding doors (which sometimes do not open properly). We recently had to replace the motor on one of the sliding doors after the wire snapped. The doors have been the only issue with our car.

Honda Odyssey Massive Oil Consumption
During long road trips, our vehicle will automatically shut down while driving. We've brought it in numerous times for repairs. Turns out the vehicle burns a heap load of oil when on long road trips. So we no longer use this vehicle for long road trips because we feel it's not reliable or safe to drive.

Misfiring Problems With My Honda Odyssey
I bought the odyssey Honda certified with 9000 miles and had nothing but problems. The van started to misfire at 50000 miles and was fixed once, now the vehicle is misfiring again dealer won't repair it under service Bulletin 13-081 because I used an aftermarket oil filter.

Features That Were Promised Do Not Work
This van has been the worst vehicle I have ever owned. The cabin watch was really important to us to keep an eye on the babies. Needless to say, neither of them work even for a short trip. I have had it at the dealership 4 different times and it is still not working.

First Year With The Honda Odyssey With Many Problems
Within 1 year I replaced the timing belt, brakes, shocks, starter, fuel pump, and the engine oil leaked into the engine. The engine had to be rebuilt. The vehicle has not been reliable. Uses a lot of fuel. The sliding door and entertainment is nice.

Recalls And Transmission Issues Are Horrible
I have also had more trouble with this van. It lurches when put into gear. I have been told it is normal. The stereo system has finally gotten recalled. This is my second Honda minivan.

Sliding Door Issues With The Honda Odyssey
The biggest issue is the power sliding doors. I've taken them in to be fixed but to no avail. When it rains or snows the doors don't work for about a day after the rain/snow.
